Summary

While transcribing an ancient manuscript, Hariga-Origa finds a smudge that makes the writing unreadable. He wants you to help find an item that will clear the nasty blot away.

Walkthrough

If you have just completed Chasing Tales, you must zone before you can get this quest. If you talk to

Talk to Hariga-Origa to start the quest. If he doesn't give it to you, your fame is too low. Check with Zabirego-Hajigo. You need level 4 fame.

Hariga-Origa asks for a Slime Oil (drops from various slime creatures), and a Frost Turnip (bought from the Auction House or Zoreen in Port Windurst (M-7)).

Trade him the two items to complete the quest and receive your rewards: A Map of Fei'Yin and 3,000 gil.

Still can't get quest
# Feb 08 2004 at 12:15 PM Rating: Default
I'm Rank 3, lv. 31/15. I've done 32 Unique quests and at least 6 repeats. I did both the "Bookworm" and "Chasing Tales" quest. I also received and finished the "Legendary Plan B" quest that has listed fame needed of 40 (just like the Smudge quest).

I also can't seem to get "Water Way to go" so I'm wondering what else might I need to do to get this quest and a few others like it, if my fame is already high?

I'm also from Windhurst,..

This quest is tied to how many Optistery quests you have done. If you can't get it yet, try doing the next overdue book quest.

gave me quest after I did both book quests, zoned, and came back.

had 31 unique quests done with 40+ repeats

FYI you need "A vial of slime oil" and a "Frost Turnip" not "Slime Oil" and "Turnip"

well if you look for these items on the AH it will show up as Slime Oil and Turnips.

Then once you click on each it will give the full name of the item...

Food/Ingredients

It's not *that* hard, if you actually use your brain and think logically.

i am 95% sure you have enough fame when you talk to the fame guy in timbre tavern and he says 'Why if it isn't <your name>! I was just heard people talking about you over dinner..." or something to that effect.

just completet this quest and in the dialog with him he refered to a book you retrive from giddeus in the "Early Bird Catches The Bookworm" quest i think. so maybe before you can get this quest you need to do the "Early Bird Catches The Bookworm" quest. dont know about fame. most likely you will need a certain amount of fame aswell.

i myself am a 49whm with ~110 unique quests done (39 unique in windurst when he gave me the quest).

27 unique windurst quests, and rank 4, won't give me the quest, how many quests did you have completed for other areas ?
Can I do it again?
# Dec 17 2003 at 2:16 AM Rating: Default
Is this quest repeatable, so I can get the 3,000 gil over and over again?

I want to know as well. I can easily buy slime oil for cheaper!

This one is actually called "A Smudge on One's Record"

and the reward is 3,000gil and the Fei'Yin map.

I have 32 unique windy quests done, including the horutoto ruins one and both overdue library book ones (all optistery quests), and I still cannot get this quest from him. Rank 2.
40+ quests
# Dec 09 2003 at 12:58 AM Rating: Default
Ok got it, 32 windy quests and 8 or more repeatables and he gave me this quest. I did the Water way to go and the Crisis in a making quests a few times and he finally relented and gave me the quest, he didn't give it to me until i had done those quests a few times.

So either my hariga faction was too low, or you need to do 40+ windy quests to get this quest.

Reward was 3000 gil and Map of Fei'Yin, and the story line is kinda interesting too.
RE: 40+ quests
# Dec 11 2003 at 6:10 PM Rating: Decent
I think I have only about 25 unique quests done in Windurst and I've known I've done repeatable quests more than 20 times for sure. I still haven't been able to get this quest. When I talk to the NPC that tells you your fame, I got something like..."There's not many people who does not know your name." I'm not quite sure what other quests I have to do, but I know there's quite a few more I have on my list that I can do, just need the time to get the items and friends to do it with. FF can get boring if you're not with friends.

I have 104 total unique completed quests, and 32 of them are in Windurst specifically. In addition I have done a number of repeatable quests and I cannot give Hariga-Origa to give me this quest.
Must be addition requirements

You need a lot of fame to be assigned this quest. At least the completion of 2-+ other quests, including the ones he assigns.

I'm a level 11 Warrior and I've done just about every single quest there is possible in Windurst up to my level (meaning I did the Horutoto Ruins map quest) and he still won't give it to me. I have the "Lost for Words" mission and when I talked to him he said something related to that so my guess is that once you complete that mission and return the lsot book he'll give it to you.
