Summary

Gantineux wants you to help him in his study of white magic. Go to the Eldieme Necropolis and offer up "spirit incense" at the dimly flickering candle to try and appease the spirits of the dead.

Walkthrough

Speak to Gantineux to begin the quest. If your fame is not at least level 4 (check with Zabirego-Hajigo in Timbre Timbers Tavern), then you will not receive this quest.

Gantineux wants you to help him in his study of white magic. He will give you the key item: Spirit Incense. You will need to head to the Eldieme Necropolis.

There are many entrances to the Eldieme Necropolis from Batallia Downs, but only 4 of them potentially lead to the ??? you need. One requires you to travel through the Ranguemont Pass and Beaucedine Glacier to get to the (F-5) entrance located on the upper section of Batallia Downs. The three other entrances are located at (G-7), (H-7), and (I-6).

Cast Sneak on yourself or use Silent Oil to avoid the undead. Bombs detect by sight but there shouldn't be any in the correct areas anyway. Head in until you see little candle stands in the tunnels. Tab around until you find the ???. It randomly spawns at one of the entrances and disappears after someone attempts to light the incense.

If you do not find the ??? simply try another location. Once you try to light it, the incense emits a putrid odor and you will be told the attempt has failed. This is normal. Go back to Gantineux and he will tell you he doesn't have anything for you but that if you speak to Eperdur in San d'Oria, he may have something for you. He is located in the chapel in Northern San d'Oria and will give you the Scroll: Teleport-Mea.

Spoilers

Offer & Acceptance

Gantineux: I am a friar of the San d'Oria Cathedral, come to Windurst as a part of a pilgrimage.
Gantineux: Now that my devotions at the Crag of Mea in the Tahrongi Canyon are complete, I have orders from the Cathedral to research the union between the magical arts of Windurst and the miracles born of faith.
Gantineux: I debated on how to best proceed, but finally settled on the field of putting troubled spirits to rest.
Gantineux: After hours of painstaking research, I was able to create an item that could be said to stand at the pinnacle of white magic!
Gantineux: Behold my creation! Please take this spirit incense and journey to the Eldieme Necropolis, a veritable city of restless souls.
Gantineux: In the Necropolis, you will find a brazier with a flame that wavers from time to time.
If you hold this spirit incense aloft in that place, it should bring the spirits into a state of tranquility. Please return and inform me of the outcome.
Gantineux: Why not go there myself, you ask? I am on a pilgrimage, and must not travel north of Jeuno.
Gantineux: Furthermore, I am but a simple scholar. It would be impossible for me to enter a place such as the Eldieme Necropolis.

??? Message

This flame seems to be burning a little brighter than the others.
The spirit incense emits a putrid odor and burns up. Your attempt this time has failed...

Return

Gantineux: Ah, you're back! And the result? Oh, I see... I was so sure it would work...
Gantineux: In any case, I must thank you for your assistance. I would like to reward you immediately, but I do not possess anything of value...
Please take this letter of introduction to Eperdur of the San d'Oria Cathedral.
Gantineux: May Paradise open its gates to you.

Finale

Eperdur: You saw Gantineux? Tell me, how does he fare? What is that? He's studying magic, you say?
Eperdur: He has always had a penchant for research, but he relies too much on his head for answers. He must revere Altana with body and soul!
Eperdur: I am sorry for any trouble he may have caused you. Please accept this as an apology.
Eperdur: May Paradise open its gates to you.

# Feb 17 2004 at 9:47 PM Rating: Good
Everyone was correct I got the candle on the first trip from Raugemnot pass -> glacier - > battalia -> necropolis trip.... I didn't have to wait or anything....

So THANKS!

However... it is a little cruel of you all to leave out a very important piece of info.

When you use the Incense on a candle there is something you should know.

IT SAYS IT BURNED UP.. AND YOU FAILED!

Now this pissed me off... I was about ready to hurl my 19" monitor out my window... and it's still pretty new... so that is not a normal thing for me.

BUT that is the message you want! If you failed to do the incense that was EXPECTED! You go back talk to the guy and he sends you to sandoria and you get scroll.

So when you get the message saying you failed... don't freak out and get pissed like I did.... go WHEE! I DID IT! and use WARP or an Instant warp scroll and runback to windhurst with a smile on your face!

What does the Glacier have to do with this? If Eldieme Necropolis is connected to Batallia, then why not use any of the other enterances to Batallia?

So get the candle from the Glacier?? This seems to go against any other post so could you please explain?
RE: Confused
# Feb 15 2004 at 4:49 PM Rating: Decent
Sorry, I see now how that my comment about the Glacier could be misinterpretted.

I didn't mean that you actually get the candle from the Glacier. What I did mean is that going through the Beaucadine Glacier is the only way to get to the F-5 section of Batallia Downs (Check for yourself - try walking to F-5 from anywhere else - you'll run into an insurmountable ledge).

I also wanted to add two more things:

- Because the other Necropolis zones are easy to run through, I would highly recommend checking them first, before going the long route through the Glacier

- If the candle isn't in the F-5 Necropolis zone (D-5 in the necropolis) when you arrive there, just go back to the entrance to the zone and wait (maybe even log for a bit) ... you don't wanna have your trip through the Glacier be a waste

Just as an update I just got this quest and did it. My fame originally was 28 Unique quests and a bunch of non-uniques as a Taru citezen of windurst. I could not get this quest. After 3 calculus quests and 2 unique quests I was able to get his quest.

I just wanted to add some notes to this page after having finished this quest last night...

On getting the candle from the same location multiple times
-----------------------------------------------------------
I believe the poster who said they got the candle from the same location twice within ten minutes was just lucky, and that the first time they got the candle it happened to randomly warp to the same spot in the necropolis.

I believe this because when I was doing the quest with my girlfriend, she was able to get the candle '???' from a spot, but when I tried immediately after her it didn't allow me - the '???' disappeared as soon as she activated it.

So I truly do think that once someone activates the '???' it will automatically warp to a new spot in the necropolis, but that the 'new' spot can potentially be the same as the 'old' spot.

On there being an entrance to the Necropolis from Rolanberry
------------------------------------------------------------
I've seen no evidence of this, and I think it was just a mistype by the original poster

On getting a map to the Necropolis
----------------------------------
You can buy a map from the map dealer in Lower Jeuno. I personally did not have a map in-game, because the layout is really simple and I don't think it would be easy to get lost in the zone. Take a look at the necropolis map pics from Allakazham.

On the MGS to use in the Necropolis
-----------------------------------
Plain Sneak will be all you need except for in two of the entrances where there are Bomb monsters (don't remember specific name) and an Anemone. These were the furthest southwest and furthest west zone bunkers.

But for safety I would recommend you take a look through the mob list on Allakazham to determine which require Invis protection. Really though, 99% of your time in the necropolis you will only need Sneak.

On getting the candle from the glacier
--------------------------------------
I spent so much time wandering through the Batallia entrances that I finally sucked it up and made journey through the Glacier so I could get to the coveted F-5 bunker. I had been to the Glacier before when I needed to get the Ice element for the Summoner quest, so I knew what to expect for the most part.

Rongeumont Pass is really a straight-forward zone to get through. Take a look at the map off of Allakazham for directions on where to travel. I used Sneak+Invis to get through.

Beaucedine Glacier is a bit trickier. I didn't have an in-game map, as usual, but I used the Allakazham map. The problem I had though was in interpretting the map. I found it pretty confusing. I've gone ahead and marked up a version of the map with the path I took to get to Batallia:

http://div.dyndns.org/glacierpass.jpg

Use Sneak+Invis to get through this zone, and watch out for Elementals and Golems. Beware of hiding in the towers when Sneak/Invis runs out, because Golems reside in there, and you won't be able to cast without drawing their aggro.

Is it worth it to go to the Glacier?
------------------------------------
It was worth it to me. I really wanted the scroll, as I'm soon to hit level 36!

I strongly suggest having the Reraise spell, or bringing along Reraise scrolls when doing this. I died twice in the whole ordeal, but having cast Reraise on myself saved me from much frustration.

I don't believe I would have died at all had I known the correct way through the zone, so I hope this post will help others get there with less trouble!

Cheers!

# Feb 06 2004 at 8:17 PM Rating: Default
I've died about 3 times in the necropolis, now. The first time sneak wore off(with no warning) and a dozen blobs started pummelling me. The second time, a went into a corner to recast sneak on myself, and a bomb attacked me from the other side of the room(I thought I was safe). His attacking me cancelled the sneak and a bunch of lost souls started to pummel me with black mage. I had reraise on, so I raised myself when I thought I was safe, but then the lost souls binded me and THEN pummeled me as soon as I got up(there were across the bloody room....).

I can't find any candle! I found unlit candles that need flint stones, and baziers that are lit in the I-10 entrance of battalia.

1) Where can I get a map of this place?

2) Is there really an entrance in rolanberry?

3) How do you get to the glacier one, and is it really worth it?

4) Does the candle just respawn after a certain time limit, or just when someone else activates it?

SO yeah.. I tried for the first time for the flickering candle.. traveled pretty deep inside.. and a Azer(bomb look-like monster) saw through sneak.. and ate me alive. sneak doesn't work on them but the other monsters so far sneak has worked.

Another quick one is the "Making the Grade" quest in the Aurastery. 2bud Mandragora leaf and Bird Feather for 250G.
RE: Question
# Jan 30 2004 at 3:15 PM Rating: Default
The easiest repeatable quest is the mandragora items one. You can trade sulfurs and cornettes for 250g and 200g respectively. The crawler calculi quest is also a good one 3 @ 600 each.

Really all you need to do quest is sneak, just don't get caught off with it! =P

Got it
# Jan 27 2004 at 4:25 PM Rating: Default
Ok I did this quest last night and you do not HAVE to go through the glacier to get it. I suggest just checking the other entrances that are in battalia. If it's not there just wait and try another day. No need to waste a life going through the glacier. Have patience, it will pop up.

Oh btw, It doesn't move right when someone gets it, either. I got it and it was still there for at least 10 min.

Good Luck!

To ease up some comfusion...

1. For both this Quest and the Teleport-Dem Quest, there ARE multiple ??? spawn locations. For this quest, the ??? changes between each location. AND when one person selects the ??? it will randomly move to a new location. The new Random location can be the same one as it's previous location, hence making it seem like it never moved. There is no pattern except, when you click on it, it randomly selects a new location.

So if there are 5 positions, and it is currently at position 1. When you click on it, it will select a new position and has a 1/5 chance of staying right where it was.

Why repeat?
# Jan 26 2004 at 8:07 PM Rating: Default
WHy not just do 10-30 DIFFERENT quests, Eh?

Repeating the same quest will take you about 60-75 repeats of the SAME quest to get this fame level.

You might as well do the quests. You will find it is more rewarding.
RE: Why repeat?
# Apr 09 2004 at 3:27 PM Rating: Default
because repeated quests give the same amount of added fame as unique quests do. if you're doing a repeatable quest for fame, you can get the fame required easily and quickly. if you're doing unique quests, it can take a far more significant investment of time and gil.
RE: Why repeat?

no they dont! why do people post information that is totally wrong? repeated quests only give about 1/4th the amount of fame that a unique quest gives.

Yes, there are quests in both San d'Oria (Teleport: Holla) and Bastok (Teleport: Dem) for those related spells.
The Common location
# Jan 20 2004 at 1:16 AM Rating: Decent
What I found out from most people is that going through the glacier is really the only location that seems to work. I had talk to 2 people and they both said its through the glaciers. So after 5 deaths and many attempts, I went through the glacier and got it right away. Its a long walk but its not that bad. The reward is worth it.

I found it!
# Jan 20 2004 at 12:16 AM Rating: Good
After many failed attempts and much mp gone to sneak + invis I finally found the "???". I entered from I-7 and the candle was at M-6. Here's the thing though, I was on my way out ready to give up once again. On my way in the candle did not have the "???" above it, but on the way out it did. I figured I would explore to see if there were any others coming in from that location, and I'm happy I did so. I don't know if this is any help, but I figured I would post it anyway.

Annoying, but possible
# Jan 17 2004 at 5:38 PM Rating: Decent
Ya this has got to be one of the most annoying quests around. Basically, you have to find the "dimly lit candle" in the Eldieme Necropolis. The Necropolis has several entrances from Battalia. Each entrance leads to a part of the Necropolis which is often seperated from the rest. And since the candle you are searching for spawns RANDOMLY, you may have to investigate all the areas to find it. (See other posts for the entrances into the Necropolis from Battalia).

The candle:
Actually, the Necropolis is filled with many dimly lit candles. However, only one of them will be the one you are looking for - and it spawns randomly. The correct candle will have the familiar "???" above it - and its usually one of the candles that line the walls of the tunnels (NOT the ones in an "alter-like" setting surrounded by Undead in a particular part of the Necropolis). When you find the "???" - simply click on it, and you will get a message saying that you tried to use the incense, but FAILED. At this point, go back to the NPC who gave you the quest (Gantineux in Windurst Waters), and he will direct you to Sandoria - where you talk to Eperdur. Eperdur will give you the Teleport -Mea Scroll!

Gantineux is in F-10 in windurst waters, in the upstairs of the Rarab Tail. To the right after you g o in the door.

bad info
# Jan 10 2004 at 2:09 AM Rating: Default
Some of the information here is wrong. I just did the quest, and seeing as I play 2 characters at the same time, I was able to get the quest component for both characters from the SAME spot, meaning that it didn't change spots on me once one character obtained it. I don't know how the changing of spots works but I do know it's NOT because someone already did it.

I just did it, and I had to go to the entrance at (F-5) of Rolanberry. Any person in my linkshell that I consulted also had to do this. Maybe there's a greater chance of the ??? being located there?

My advice would be to check that one first, even though it's a real pain to get to. This quest probably took a good 2-3 hours to do, since I looked through all the other ones first.

RE: Location
# Jan 09 2004 at 3:09 AM Rating: Default
There's a greater chance of it being there BECAUSE it's the hardest. The ??? can only be in one spot at any given time, and when sombody gets it, it moves. Sooo, it's at the hardest often because people easily snatch it up at the easier spots until it moves to the hard spot. Make sense?
A tip
# Jan 07 2004 at 8:11 PM Rating: Default
Just to help you guys out a bit, the locations are correct. The ??? exists in only one spot at a given time. When sombody gets it, it moves to a different location. Soooo, it's possible that even if you keep running around to all the different ones, you still may miss it if somebody grabs it there before you get there. What I would recommend is having people stationed at various places checking. That's what we did, and we got it for 3 different people.
