Summary

A piece of paladin artifact gear lays hidden in a coffer in Garlaige Citadel.

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed Sharpening the Sword - PLD AF1 and activated Borghertz's Stalwart Hands to start this quest.

Head to Garlaige Citadel and acquire a Garlaige Coffer Key. Keys drop from enemies such as Vault Weapons, Over Weapons, Hellmines, Magic Jugs, Fallen Mages and Fallen Majors.

Once you have the key, you must find a treasure coffer. All of the coffer spawn points are behind banishing gates, which require a total of four people to open (each person stands on a switch to open the gates) -- the gates may also be bypassed using Garlaige Citadel (S) and the Sparkling Light mini-quest. Treasure coffers spawn behind Banishing Gate #3 at G-6, I-5 and I-7. Behind Banishing Gate #2, coffers spawn at G-8, H-8 and I-7. You must have your job set as paladin when you open this coffer.

Trade your coffer key to the coffer to receive your Gallant Coronet.

coffer

I merely had the gloves started, didn't do anything except talk to Guslam and he asked me to do the Eldieme Necropolis coffer for the old gauntlets. Boots were half finished (needed to go to Oztroja to fight the fish) and gloves had just started when I received my coronet.

Corleonis... I'm curious as to if you had your gloves when you opened the chest.. i have heard from several sources that you need the gloves in order to get the coronet and breeches. Please Correct me if this is wrong.. thank you.

From what I've read on various sites, it seems like you only need to have the AF1-4 gloves quest started when you go coffer hunting for your coronet and breeches. You don't actually need to have the gloves in possession at the time of opening the coffers.

Most Paladins ideally want to have their AFs in the chronological order that they can wear them level-wise, but that doesn't mean it has to be this way.
Solo
# Nov 08 2004 at 1:55 PM Rating: Good
I just got this solo as well, was lucky about the key too, about a month and a half ago (when I was in the level range of Garlaige) some random high level shouted that they had the key and asked if anyone wanted it. I shouted back, they invited me, I got it before even knowing it was for my own AF ^^.

Fast forward to three days ago, I decide I'm gonna camp the coffer, I was only half way done with the boots and had just activated the gloves. So I throw on my WHM sub (gimped at 21 btw) and get over there, I shout to see if theres anyone willing to hold down the switches for me to run through and then just come back. I get a RDM that was seeking a pt there and an AF DRG who happened to be running around for "fun" we get to the first gate, some random fourth person gets on the last switch but the RDM turns back, afraid to continue. Turns out that "random" fourth person was in another coffer pt so me and the DRG take off after them. For whatever reason we fell behind some, we get the message saying the second gate was opening, we run up to it just as it closes...

So the two of just get on two switches, hoping 2 other people would get the others. I'm resting on a switch, marking my map with the coffer pops when an explosure aggros me -.- I run to the DRG, we're fighting it, he barfires himself (was subbing RDM), i neglect to barfira myself, self destruct does 784 to me ( I would've lived if I had healed myself from its initial aggro attacks) and it drops the bomb coal that I need for G1 XD. So im laying dead in front of a switch with a newly obtained G1 item, could've been worse for sure. I figured if anybody wanted to open the second gate, they would see me and raise me.

After 30 mins, that's exactly what happened, so I slipped through with the pt that raised me, the DRG turned back, leaving me in the pt's hands (though I wasn't at all, they just raised me and opened the gate, then left). I pass banishing gate 2 and there were nothing but sight aggros (beetles) and I was running off of prism powders thanks to my gimped sub. I start checking the 4 points but with the other pt there, I wasn't feeling too great about it and i didn't wanna waste my few prism powders. So I logged at the pop point that's west of when you enter the banishing gate (up some stairs, some bats were always near so I figured I could sneak and camp that spot if my invis wore and i was out of powders).

I log back on next morning and start my run through. Notice a 58 RNG (at least) camping too -.- so I just try to beat him to every pop point, within 10 mins, it popped behind the tainted flesh (ugly mofos btw), I went to grab it, and still had invis on XD, so I panicked, mashed the buttons to deactivate it and managed to get the coffer :D out popped my Gallant Coronet, a happy end. I firmly believe anyone can solo coffers (not the keys, just the chests themselves) if they're patient and careful, my only death was from me not paying attention and no healing myself etc. Good luck to all PLDs out there.

I did this earlier today.. we got 3 keys in under 1 hour (huh?!) We had one TH2, and we got a key every 4 kills on hellmines, and we got the 3rd key after the 7th or 8th Over-Vault Weapon. With all the horror storys I've heard.. My recommendation is to just hit the Hellmines and weapons. No annoying Bloodsabre, and your ranger-dragoons won't be useless on them, just be sure to bring a really fast DRK with Stun and save your TP for Stun moves.

Garliage Citadel PLD AF5 Guide

Gallant Coronet is one of the tougher AFs to score for most ppl because the coffer chest is difficult to reach and competition for the chest is fierce.

Below is a concise guide on what to do and where to go for your AF5.

Getting your coffer key

What to bring with you:
- Map of Garliage Citadel (purchased in Jeuno)
- Party of 54+ in a solid exp config, alliance if lower
- WHM or WHM-sub for Curaga and status cures and silence.

Where to Camp - Garliage Citadel Map

Getting to camp is simple, but is made even easier because you should have already become familiar with the area from exping.

Head into the Citadel and down the stairs where the Lvl 30s parties are camped and take a left at the first intersection. Sneak and Invis your party and drop down the series of holes at (G-8) on map#1. You should end up at (G-7) on map#4. Once your entire party has dropped, proceed to the small tunnel between (H-8) and (I-8). This tunnel will serve as a safe camping ground as you pull key-droppers from the areas North and East of your position.

What to Kill
- Wraith
- Fallen Major*
- Fallen Mage*
- Hellmine
- Over Weapon
- Vault Weapon
- Magic Jug*
- Tainted Flesh

You can pull almost all of these from your current camp, but the safest and most plentiful key-droppers are the ones with asterisks (*) next to their names. Remember to keep any casters silenced or be prepared to see high level AoE nukes and ancient magic come your way.

Luckily, the drop-rate for the Garliage Citadel coffer key is better than it was in Eldieme, so it shouldn't take you too long before you're ready to begin...

Hunting the Coffer- Garliage Citadel Treasure Map

What to bring with you:
- Map of Garliage Citadel (purchased in Jeuno)
- Minimum party of 4 ppl who can sneak/invis themselves independently
- somebody with escape or teleport is handy.

Ok, you've got the coffer key, but the worst has yet to come. Garlaige Citadel is notorious for being a pain to find chests in, and the reason behind that is that there are areas that can only be accessed by passing through gates that require 4 ppl to stand on floor-switches. And of course, the coffer chests are behind these gates. Things are also made much more difficult because almost everything in the citadel aggros, and casting is tricky b/c there are a series of mobs that even aggro to magic.

So, gather your coffer hunting foursome and enter the citadel and make for point (A), the first banishing gate, on map#1 (killing ifrit map-set). Invisible should be enough for you to get past the Borer Beetles to the floor-switches. Once your party is gathered, sneak/invis everybody and have each member stand on a different switch and the first banishing gate should open. Everyone should break for the door as soon as it opens because it will close very quickly and there is no way to open it from the other side.

Once you are behind the first gate, it's time to make your way to the second gate. Sneak and invis your way to the stairs at (I-9) first. From here, you will be able to see a long hallway stretch out in front of you, and by looking at the map you see that this hallway has a series of 8 small rooms in addition to the 2nd banishing gate at the center (H-10). 4 of these 8 small rooms in the hallway have floor switches like the ones you saw before the first gate. Sneak/Invis up and have each person break quickly for a switch. A word of caution: if sneak or invis begins to wear for anybody, DON'T reapply in any of the small rooms or in the hall! Return to the stairs to re-cast or you will end up aggroing magic pots. Be patient and keep safe. When your chat-box indicates that the 2nd gate is opening, everybody should make a mad dash through the gate.

Once everybody's behind gate #2, you will be at point map#3 on the treasure map (speakeasy) and you can finally begin to start looking for coffers. If the coffer is not at any of the 4 spawn points behind gate#2, consider yourself unlucky and it's time to open the 3rd banishing gate. Go to the broken stairs at point (D) on map#3 (killing ifrit) to get back to map#2 again.

The 3rd banishing gate is located at (H-6) of map#2 and can be opened in similar fashion as the 2nd gate. The floor-switch layout is a bit trickier on this one, so when the door begins to open, make sure each person makes a b-line for it. There are 3 spawn points behind the 3rd gate, but these are usually heavily camped because there is a back-door to a plateau in Sauramogue Champaign here.

Once you find your chest, just open it to receive your Gallant Coronet and teleport/warp. If you're behind gate#3 you can zone to Sauramogue if you'd like.

Good luck!

MAPS

Your Garilage coffer maps... as well as all coffer maps for other quests are located here
[link=http://www.speakeasy.org/~sticks/ffxi/treasure/title.html /link]

I camped 10 coffers between the groups I went down there with.... those maps are accurate as hell... trust them.

Side note : Behind banishing gate 2 there is a coffer that spawns on the plantform near some broken stairs... I assure you it is ON THE PLATFORM I have seen it.... DO NOT try and peek over the broken stairs... if you fall off the stairs you will need 4 people to open the banishing gate for you again.

Tainted Flesh often guard 2 of the coffer locations behind gate 2... I am not 100% positive because I didn't want to push my luck too far... but they didn't seem to aggro.

Behind banishing gate 3 there are ALOT of skeletons... all close to the gate... if you wedge yourself against the gate you can stand there for at least an hour... I never died like that... so consider that a "probably safe spot"

Have fun.

This key is dropped by more than just the fallen skeletons, also by:

Hellmines
Magic Jugs
Over Weapons
Vault Weapons
Tainted Flesh (not 100% sure on this one)
Wraith

the drop rate is better from Weapons, Wraiths, Hellmines, and Magic Jugs, but you need a higher level party to be able to take them as quickly as the Fallens. My recommendation if you're all around 54-56 is just chain Fallens as quickly as possible, and bring a thief with TH2. I've heard people tell me that TH doesn't affect drops, yet every single time I've seen more than one key drop every 3 hours, there's been a thf in the party. Also, for the second and third banishing gates, make sure everyone in the party has silent oils and prism powders, there are monsters that aggro to magic by the switches you'll need to stand on to open the gate. It can be done with sneak/invis magic, but it's much easier with items.

All in all, I haven't done Beadeaux or Zvahl yet for my paladin coffer AFs, but this was the easiest AF piece for me. (well, aside from the sword)

-Magicker, 58 pld/war as of this post
-Windurstian Hume of Valefor, rank 5 (5.1 going down tonight)

p.s. Neo, I passed you, mwahahaha ;)
