Battle Notes

To begin, trade 20 Beastmen Seals to Shami at (H-8) in Port Jeuno in order to obtain the Rare/Ex item Cloudy Orb. Upon receiving the orb, make your way to the Horlais Peak zone located in the Yughott Grotto dungeon.

Be advised that only three players can enter the battlefield, that their levels will be capped at level 20, and that there is a 15 minute time limit that starts the moment the orb trader enters the battlefield.

Upon entering the battlefield, you will find a large Sniper Pugil flanked on either side by a smaller Archer Pugil. The Archer Pugils have less hp and are generally weaker defensively and offensively than the Sniper Pugil.

  • Neither the Sniper Pugil nor the Archer Pugils perform any tp attacks, as their attack repetoire consists of ranged water based attacks with a powerful knockback effect.

In order to spawn the armoury crate, all mobs in the battlefield must be defeated in the allotted time.

Battle Strategies

The most common strategies for winning this BCNM involves one or more Summoners, the Ramuh avatar, and the Astral Flow two-hour ability.

Solo Method

The first method involves one summoner soloing the BCNM (Preferably on Lightningday and not on Watersday), and is decidedly more difficult than a two summoner method. Upon entering the BCNM, run up the pathway until you are in visual range of the pugils, while making sure to stay outside of their aggro range. After buffing up, use a Yagudo drink and then summon Ramuh.

  • Because Ramuh is a Thunder based avatar, he is strongly resistant to the Water based attacks of the pugils, and his Judgment Bolt bloodpact is especially powerful against them.

After summoning Ramuh, activate Astral Flow and have Ramuh assault the Sniper Pugil. As soon as Ramuh strikes the pugil, have Ramuh use Judgment Bolt and then use an Ether to restore your mp. Then retreat Ramuh and run towards the exit until just prior to the recast time of your Bloodpact Rage resets, in which case have Ramuh re-assault the Sniper Pugil and have him use Judgment Bolt again. If all goes well, the two Archer Pugils will be killed by the second attack and the Sniper Pugil will have very little hp left. At this time, retreat Ramuh again and kite the pugil back up the hill until the recast timer is up, then have Ramuh assault again and use one last Judgment Bolt (or Thunderspark) to finish off the Sniper Pugil.

Duo Method #1

This duo method involves two summoners and is noticeably easier than the solo method. Upon entering the BCNM, run up the pathway until you are in visual range of the pugils, while making sure to stay outside of their aggro range. After buffing up and using Yagudo Drinks, both summoners will then summon Ramuh.

After summoning Ramuh, both summoners will activate Astral Flow and then have their Ramuhs assault the Sniper Pugil. After they both strike the pugil, have the Ramuhs use their Judgment Bolts, killing off the two Archer Pugils and severely weakening the Sniper Pugil. At this time, pop an Ether and wait till the Bloodpact recast timers reset, then finish off the Sniper Pugil with another Judgment Bolt or a Thunderspark.

Duo Method #2

This method is similar to the first, but with notable exceptions. Unlike the first method, only one summoner will use their Astral Flow, while the other just uses Thunderspark. Upon entering the BCNM, run up the pathway until you are in visual range of the pugils, while making sure to stay outside of their aggro range. After buffing up and using Yagudo Drinks, both summoners will then summon Ramuh.

After summoning Ramuh, one of the summoners will activate Astral Flow, then both will have their avatars assault the Sniper Pugil. The Astral Flow summoner will have Ramuh use Judgment Bolt while the other summoner will have Ramuh use Thunderspark, leaving all three pugils below 50% HP and paralyzed due to Thunderspark's additional Paralysis effect. The Astral Flow summoner will then pop an Ether and, once the Bloodpact recast timer has reset, will use Judgment Bolt again. At this time, if the Sniper Pugil is still alive, the other summoner can finish it off with a bloodpact or just allow the Ramuhs to melee its last bit of HP.

Recorded Battle
# Jan 19 2005 at 3:07 PM Rating: Excellent
Well, I solo'd this multiple times throughout a solid weekend session... I think I ended up with a horrible record of 2 wins and 6-8 losses. However, I got two platoon discs, two thunder spirit pacts and a mannquin head... so I'm satisfied. I also managed to record my last solo victory and I uploaded it to my webspace so other smn's can get an idea of how it's done. Whether you're a smn or not, you still may enjoy the video... (NOTE: I changed my pugil models to look like Leviathan for entertainment purposes.)

File Size is 56 megs and requires microsoft windows media player 9 or later to view.

www.angelicknights.com/media/video/Nebz_bcnm20.avi

Please right click and save target, do not attempt to stream 56 megs from my web host.

I'm pretty sure the pugils attacks aren't physical damage therefore your 2hr is completely pointless.

Unicorn Server...no attention paid to days done.

Ramuh's Judgement Bolt kicked butt and the same team met up every two hours to try again.

I need mannequin Head and Body.. I read that this is the BCNM to get them. I have crap loads of seals and just got my BST to 20 for the Wings of Fury BCNM.. Plan is to charm one Archer Pugil and have it keep the other busy while the party fights the Sniper Pugil... Myself and a tank melee and healer keeps us alive... or perhaps helps melee if it is a rdm or smn.

My friends just got owned by this thing.

smn/whm
whm/blm
war/mnk

They spammed their water attack, the smn took more than half life with Judgemental Bolt, went down to heal. Got MP up to 100 and was summoning Ramuh again when the other 2 died.

How do you avoid the water slam? The 2 mages had aquavail on, but their casting was still interrupted to point where they were useless.

If the summoner had enough time to Assault and Judgement Bolt they would've nailed it. Any advice?

The Smn should not go down to heal. Smn needs a yagudo drink and one ether. When you enter, buff, protectra and barwatera are helpful. Smn should summon Ramuh. Use Yagudo drink right afterwards. Whm and War follow the Smn up the hill. Soon as the Smn can see the middle pug, he/she should move forward spamming assault. Once Ramuh starts to attack, the summoner needs to run around the side pugs and stand behind the middle pug. Wait a couple of seconds as, the summoner might get hit once by the pug. Soon as summoner gets hit, move forward.
Astral Flow/Judgement Bolt. Smn should then pop ether as the war uses his 2 hour ability. Attack side pug, if Ramuh dies before one side pug is dead, the War needs to immediately switch targets and voke the middle pug off the smn. If smn gets hit Whm needs to focus on the Smn. One of two things'll happen. Either Smn will get second Judgement Bolt off without resummoning or will have to resummon then use the second bolt. 2 Bolts'll finish them off.
Hope this helps.

Personally, never failed with just me (Smn/Whm and my friend Mnk/War) Hundred Fists rocks.

I felt that my Mog House was a little boring so i decided to get a Mannequin, i found out that the head component was in this BCNM. When I found out what it droped i instantly put a party together and here it is.

Timeaus (me) War/Mnk
Apathy Whm/Blm
Muralidaran Smn/Whm

This battle was over faster than what i expected. Mura used Ramuh's Judgement Bolt to begin the match. After that he called Ifrit and used the Inferno ability.

Drops
Mannequin Head (yay)
Platoon Bow
Platoon Gun
Scroll: Hords Lullaby
Shall Shell
500 gil

Overall the Match was fun, except the second time when Ifrit was killed before the Astral Flow.
Not too bad

The easist time I've had on this BCNM is 2 rangers and 1 whm.

Simple plan, run in and curl around to one of the walls (so that the water balls don't knock you back). Both the rangers 2-hour the sniper pugil. Then they just finish it off with regular attacks.

After that it's a pretty easy fight. Basic BCNM strats should be used, like proper foods/drinks, but other then that this is a very easy fight.

My first party set up on this fight was
Drg/War
Mnk/War
Smn/Whm

NOt sure what foods if any my friends used but all I used was a Yagudo Drink and an Ether.

Battle went easy as pie. Cast Pro, Aquaveil, Ramuh. Popped drink. Went around the bend and soon as I could get Ramuh to attack, he went in. Got blown back twice before I could get close enough to use Astral Flow/Judgemnet bolt. 332/332/140 was the damage to all three pugs. My two friends started wailing on the pugs. Mnk used his two hour, but later said not really needed. 2 sec away from second judgement all three pugs were down.

500g/each
Shall Shell
Red Rock
Pug Scales
Mannequin Head
Thunder Spirit Pact
Platoon Cutter

The 2nd go 'round last night went in with Drg/War Rng/War and me Smn/Blm this time.

Still won but Drg and Rng both died. Got Judgement Bolt off twice for the win. Little nerve wracking :-) This combo isn't as great as the first but we still won.

Drops from second fight were:
500g/each
Horde Lullaby
Mannequin Head
Translucent Rock
Shall Shell.

Now I've got two bcnm 20's that I can do for some fun. Wings of Fury running 6 of 9 wins. Shooting Fish 2 of 2.

Update 9-5-04

Did another today with the first party set up. Definately would reccomend Drg/War Mnk/War Smn/Whm. Totally owned the pugs. No one dropped below 1/2 hp even without me healing anyone. Mnk said his 2 hour is not needed.

Drops from 3rd round are:

Mannequin Head
Shall Shell
Translucent Rock
Blaze Spikes
500 gil
Mythril Beastcoin.

This one is more fun than Wings of Fury. Now if we could only get those heads to sell!

Don't know if we're lucky or if it's a permenant drop. 4th try me and mnk go for this fight by ourselves for the heck of it. 2 Judgement Bolts, both of us half way down on life. Pugs owned.

750g
Warp Spell
Platoon Bow
Red Rock
Mannequin Head
Shall Shell.

Anyone else had four heads in four drops?

Our Method
# Sep 04 2004 at 12:37 AM Rating: Decent
We played all the possible odds on this, and we're 3/5 on it. First off, you have to walk in knowing what to expect or you're totally going to die.

We went in as a primarily melee party. WAR/NIN (for the subbed weapons), MNK/WAR, and WHM/BLM solely to heal. We went on Lightningday when they were weaker. The WAR walked in first to draw all their attention at once, so the attacks would not be staggered, otherwise you'll never get a move in. Always make sure to move to one of the sides, because if you get blown out the entrance back down the path, consider the battle lost.

Have one person hold aggro while the other 2 hours, then switch off. So long as someone can heal, you should be alright, and remember to Barwater so the attacks don't do as much. The WAR and MNK each had an X-potion and ended up using it during the fight, but we finally came out on top using that strategy. Tried it with a RNG who never got a shot off, because of the attacks moving him. This set-up may not be the best, but it's one that worked for us and may work for someone else.

The key to winning this is knowing what you're up against, and having a team that works well together. I tried it with other people, and never again. >_<; I'm sticking to my perm-20 team.
RE: Our Method
# Nov 04 2004 at 2:14 PM Rating: Excellent
A few small addendums to the highly accurate "if you don't know what to expect you're going to die" point.

1) The Pugils will NOT move from the center of the room.

2) The Pugils will only perform the waterball attack, and will NOT melee whatsoever.

These are key points. Upon reading the previous postings on this BCNM, I rounded up 2 friends (20 drk/war, 20 smn/whm) to put the Ramuh - Astral Flow strategy into action. After the requisite food/buffing, I lead the charge (20 pld/war) into the arena, taking care to move to the side of the entrance so as to not be blown back down the path by the waterballs. I had assumed that this would grab aggro and the fish would hence charge after me -- big mistake. That sniper and his two friends just took one look, giggled, and pummeled me to the wall with the water attack without budging from the middle of the room. The damage itself wasn't so terrible, but the subsequent stunning effect was -- I wasn't even able to get off a provoke, let alone a cure or invincible, when the time came. The smn was able to get off one judgment bolt (which did drop all 3 to below half hp), but because of the stun/inability to heal or invince, I dropped too fast and the fight was pretty much over after that. The key point here is to remember that whomever is holding the initial aggro will not be useful whatsoever in a damage dealing capacity (or any other, really, besides tanking) during that time -- you will be too far away from the fish and constantly stunned.

Next time I plan to invincible right off the bat, provoke and just take the hits, to avoid the debacle mentioned above. Also thinking that the drk/war should go war/mnk (for mighty strikes and backup tanking ability).

Basically, it appeared that as long as the melees can live long enough for the smn to get off the astral flow twice, the battle is won.
RE: Our Method
# Dec 24 2004 at 6:46 PM Rating: Decent
Um... when my smn friend and i went in, he used judgement bolt with ramuh and ran back while ramuh poked the fish, then when ramuh died he was already down at the beginning casting ramuh again, when he ran up the fish were coming down and shot him back but ramuh still got the bolt in . . . The fish WILL move from the center!!
Solo as a SMN
# Sep 03 2004 at 11:10 PM Rating: Good
I soloed this BCNM battle with a SMN after getting the Ramuh avatar.

Use a similar strategy to the "three Searing Light" method that you use to get the avatars, except use Ramuh and his "Judgment Bolt" attack. Do it properly, and it should only take two of his attacks to kill all three pugils.

Try to make a party of 2 nin/war and a blm/whm. Then have the 2 nin walk up and distract them while the blm nukes and cures. This might work if you can get Utsusemi to cast everytime. The good thing about this is that if all else fails the 2 nin can 2hour and maybe take them out with it while the blm/whm can stay alive. Just a reminder: these BCNM are no joke so don't use bad sub-jobs when fighting.

Well, that might put them to sleep for a quarter of a second due to the fact that both dia and shock drain hp. So that is not the way to go :P

BSTs are borderline useless in this fight. The pugils are almost impossible to charm (I'm the one who submitted this quest). The best setup we had was a BLM who managed to sleep one of them, though we still died in the end.

Our close range DDers (and we've tried WAR, DRK, and MNK) never got close enough to do real damage. We managed to get them to alternate targets by running the DRK up first, and while they shot at him (knocking him back past our BLM/WHM), I (as the WAR/THF) would run up, hit one a time or two and then get shot back across the field. Heal, rinse and repeat.

I think the best setup will involve Rangers and Black Mages. We're still trying to beat this one. The record on Cait Sith is under 4 minutes so someone has had some luck with it. Anyone not wielding spells, bows or Summons will have next to no use in this battle.
very hard...

the best way to do it is to come with 2 or 3 BSTs and charm the 2 archers and then kill the sniper. possibly BST/WHM, BST/BLM, BST/WAR, but i dont know.

They don't have an AOE. Each pugil only has one attack called Waterball. From the poor measurements I've been able to gather, it seems that the delay on waterball is approximately 4 seconds.

I'm not sure if a THF's 2 hour of Perfect Dodge will work against this ability, but as soon as I get THF up to 20, I'm going to try that also.
