I just spent some time trying to get the Sharp Stone and getting nothing but Mine Gravel and broken pickaxes. Until I realized that I was mining at the wrong spot!!
There are 2 mythril seams on the second floor of the mine at (I-8) and (J-8). Those are NOT the seams to mine for the Sharp Stone. You need to go to the 3rd floor, just like the instructions said. I just got confused. Once I went to the correct room on the 3rd floor at (I-9), I mined ONCE, and got the Sharp Stone. The correct room has 2 Mythril Seams in the same room. The incorrect rooms have only one mythril seam. I hope this helps others.

I can add a detail to this. I jsut did 5 runs of yag necklaces, and with fame 9 in all cities except Norg, Nanaa still wouldn't offer me this quest.
I decided to try talking to Varun (he says something along the lines of "where did I drop that, it's going to be impossible to find..."), and Nanaa immediately offered me to go to Bastok and have her grey rock appraised.

you can still trade her necklaces. It's a repeatable quest.
I will be sending this as an update as well, but you do NOT give Nanaa Mihgo the 10gil ... Here is what I did.
1.) Talked to Nanaa Mihgo, got the quest, and the Key Item for this quest.
2.) Went to Bastok Markets and talked to Ardea who gave me 10gil for the Key item.
3.) I went back to Winhurst and tried to give Nanaa Mihgo the 10 gil, she did nothing. I talked to her and got scolded for selling the Key Item. I tried to trade the 10 gil again, no go. I talked to her again, she just said the same thing.
4.) I talked to Varun, who asked me to get a sharp stone.

Well, considering her other quest (Mihgo's Amigo) boosts Norg fame, I don't see why this won't.
Still, it's a non-repeatable quest, so who cares?

As far as I can tell, the repeatable quests in all three nations will give nation fame the first time, and then Norg for all repeats. So the first time I smuggled, turned in zinc ore, and turned in necklaces; I got Sandy, Bastok, and Windy fame, respectively. After that first time it was Norg which accrued the fame.

I just thought I'd share my experience. Let it serve as a warning to all. Apparantly you cannot get the Sharp Stone from the Mythrill Seam noted in this thread unless you have talked to Varun.
I tried to get it when I sold the stone, trying to save myself a trip. I used up 3 stacks of picks on this seam (I mine for gil, so they were in my inventory already), with no drop. After talking to Varun, I got the Sharp Stone on the second swing, never broke a single pick.

I'm doing mission 2-3 right now and I saw that I should have talked to Nanaa Mihgo to get the Rock Rocketeer Quest. So, before I headed off to Palbourough Mines I warped back to Windhurst Woods to get the quest.
I went up to Nanaa to get the quest and she told me off, "I can't stand the sight of you. get out of herre, and don't show yourrr face to me any time soon," she said. Earlier I have completed the Mihgo Amigo Quest and brought her the 4 Yagudo Bead Necklaces.
I waited a day already and she still doesnt wanna talk to me. What should I do? I want her to be my friend and give me that quest.

For the record, Varun's location is H-9 in Windurst Woods by the homepoint crystal. He's a Hume in leather armor.

This may help: You must go to the 3rd floor, and on the western wall of the circular room of I-9 is where you will obtain the Sharp Stone. The Mithril Vein on the 1st floor at F-7 will NOT yield a Sharp Stone. The Sharp Stone is Rare/Ex and can't be purchased at Auction House.

I see three "rooms" at grid location I-9. You need to go to the one with mining points outlined by wooden frames (for those who have never mined before). You must go to the western wall, the mining point on the eastern wall did not work for me (10 tries).
There are Old and Copper Quadavs in there that are level 20-30. They do not aggro if you Sneak and they do not even aggro while you mine. I got my Sharp Stone after two attempts.

Confirmed, I got the sharp stone after I mined the west mythril seam in (I-9) and talked to Varun and Mihgo after giving the sharp stone to NPC near Goldsmithing guild. Trade 10 G what are you guys smoking?
Unless you desperately need the fame, this quest is a waste of time. I blew through 4 stacks of pickaxes, no sharp stone. Yes I've done everything I was supposed to. When I went to get more pickaxes I ended up getting aggroed by Quadavs (RDM30) and ended up dying due to links.
It's just not worth it.

i know what u feel... i did first part traded stone went back talked to mahigo again she woundlt take the 10 gil talked to varun several times(just to make sure) then went to palboro went to I-9 on third floor and went thru at least 1 stack on each side of the room mithral seam at east and west side of room and got nuthing but mine gravel and dam pickaxe breaks almost everytime with full field gear mahigo and varun still say same thing... what do i do now i even tried mining at the other mithral seams in palboro and no luck there either [aggrevated in bizmarck]

I traded her the 10gil, nothing happened. I clicked her, she talked something like "thats what you sold it for? grrr we could have done better by giving it to the traveller. Well no bother for me anymore". I traded the 10gil again, nothing happened. I talked to Varun, he told me all about the stone.

Yes. As long as she has mentioned the traveller, and Varun has told you about finding the stone and the mines, you can head for Palborough. Bring a stack of pickaxes! :D
I think that the quadavs in ALL levels of palburough will stop agroing you at arround lvl 29 or so... I went in with my lvl 25 whm and was able to solo the higher levels (they conned easy to me), but it was still a tough scrape becuase i was a whm... Just about any fighter class 25+ should be able to solo them with the greatest of ease though, i paired up with a lvl 26 war to get my kazahm key out of the deeper levels of palburough and watched him take down 3 or 4 without ever hitting critical health levels
So i would say the recodmended level is about 25 on any class but BLM (Lower health, defence, less self healing ability then WHM, and WHM's get maul's + shield's. Nuking wont help much becuase highest spell you get is probably thunder or aeroga, both of which have enormus wait times during which you get slayed >.<
These things will probably wack you arround for 50+ if your a blm.

Copper, Brass, and Old Quadav (the key droppers) will not stop aggroing until closer to level 34. Also, soloing these as any but a strong melee class (war/mnk/pld/drk) probably isn't a good idea. It was a little while ago, but as a 25THF it wasn't possible to take more than one down between healings.

What a mess. I've been back to Windy after selling the rock, talked to the cat burglar, talked to the poor jerk in Windy woods, and returned to the mines. (Heck, I even talked to the NPC I sold the first stone to, who told me it had already been used in a project.) I used up roughly 22 pickaxes on the two mythril seams on the third floor. (There are three round rooms in a row. One of them has a mythril seam at I-8, not I-9, I don't care what all the guides say. The east-most room also has a mythril seam. Nothing in the room between those two, but the passage leading back into the bulk of the mines.) I've mined at both mythril seams, but mostly at the West one, and gotten nothing but gravel and broken picks.
The only thing I can think of that might be ******** me up is that I never tried to actually trade the 10 gil to the burglar. When she said the phrase I'd seen in the guides, (dismal sum etc,) I just went to go see Varun.

I wasn't able to do a lot of quests until AFTER I finished Mission 2-1. That means, if you're having problems getting the quest due to Migho raping you, you have to finish your mission by heading to the House of the Hero in Windurst Walls. There should be a cutscene, and then you get a key item to take back to the Opistery. Do that and you should be able to get this quest.

2) Ardea - In front of the Goldsmith's Guild, Bastok Markets.
3) Varun - Behind the Manustery, Windurst Woods.
Steps needed:

A1) Level up some. I raided Palborough as a Lvl25 WHM/RDM, partied w/ a Lvl24 BLM/RDM and Lvl25 WAR/MNK. Cakewalk.
P2) The stone won't drop! I've used a ton of picks!
A2) Go back to Windurst, give the 10g to Mihgo, talk to Varun. The sharp stone will not drop until you've advanced the quest. It just won't. Listen to the people who've suffered losing pick after pick in a vain (vein? ha ha) attempt to get this quest finished. If I haven't been clear yet, Go Back To Windurst.
P3) I already finished the mission where Mihgo tried to rape me and take my gear. Now she doesn't want to talk to me!
A3) Unrelated issue; you aren't getting the quest because your fame isn't high enough. Do some other quests for more fame and try to get this one again later.

You don't have to "give" her 10 gil >.> Just talk to her and she'll get pissed off. Then talk to Varun, etc.
Followed these instructions, the quest went very smoothly, I got my sharp stone on my second attempt at mining the mythril seam on the west side of the room.
P4) took the rock to Ardea but now Nanna Migho wont take the gil ... answer for that one? she tells me to get out of her face, also, Since i cant talk to her i cant give her the lapis coral to complete the 2-2 mission. i need this to be completed so i can go on to mission 2-3 any help is appreciated.

I got fed up with trying to give her her 10 gil, so I said (in a Cartman voice) ***** this, I'm going home.
Tele'dem'd / Chocobo'd and figured I'd go to P. Mines anyways. Went to "East of I-9" like mentioned and my first hit I got the item. I dunno what's up with the give 10 gil thing, but she didn't take it, I got to keep it and got the sharp stone. Yeah me!

OMG, thanks for the info, first i was mining all the mining spots everywhere.... got some ores and made some gil, but i wanted to finish the quest. Then talking to Vorun, or whatever in bastok, i saw i was looking for a rock ingrained with mythril. Then im mining the mythril seems....nothing, not even making money. What a waste, i have been mining for over a month, off and on, thanks mucho for this info!!!!!

A side note if you mine the mythril seems by mistake and have loads of Mine Gravel that won't sell on AH or anything. Don't be sad I discovered later that you can sell them to any vendor for a little over 100gil (depending on your fame) each not a lot of gil but some.

These are excellent directions. Two comments I want to make:
Mainly, the sharp stone does in fact appear in your inventory. (Rare/Ex: "A rough-hewn stone with sharp edges. The ore in the rock glitters.") Not a key item.
As for which seam, I don't have much data; I got my sharp stone on my first try, from the west seam.

Thanks, Mijkai - I actually wrote this up after I'd trekked back to Windurst and just before I actually headed out to mine the stone -- hence the confusion on whether it listed as a real item or a key item. I've updated the posting accordingly. :)

In my attempts at gaining Tenshodo fame, I had arrived at Nanaa with a Gobbiebag full of Yagudo Necklaces, only for her to offer me this quest. I turned it down, not having any place to put 30 necklaces and afraid I'd lose the ability to hand them in altogether. Any attempts to get the quest now, however, fail. I've logged in an out a zillion times since then.. leaving Windurst Woods.. leaving Windurst.. traveling around the world thirty times.. done ten or so other quests.. She still won't offer it. Does anyone know if it's lost forever?

Yes, you can get this quest at almost any time. I do believe it requires a precursor, either fame, mission or particular quest related. perhaps level?

A friend of mine is trying to get this quest, and is having no luck. He turned in 30 Yagudo Necklaces, and Nanaa keeps saying something about getting away with murder.
I was able to get the quest with no problem, and only turned in a few necklaces(though I've done more quests than him).

quest has nothing to do with the necklaces. those are for tenshodo fame. u need to have windurst fame with quests. I have 25 quests done and got this quest.

fyi, Qust doesn't seem to work until you have gone back to talk to Varun, which means 2 trips to Bastok. Have to go from Wind-Bastok-Wind-Pmines for it to work, so not really that good to do in tandum with the mission unless you have made the first trip already.

2.) Went to Bastok and traded the rock for 10 gil
3.) Talk the Varun
in that order.

There's a fair set of good data here, but there's a tiny bits of information missing. There are two mithril seams in the room at I9.
East seam: gives gravel for the pre-dragon mission.

I burned 24 picks. East only gave gravel and lots of it (about 1.3 gravel per pick). West only gave broken picks and one sharp stone. Stone was from the first or second pick. I was curious, so kept on mining until my picks were gone.
