Summary

Zeid, the sole master of the way of the Dark Knight in Vana'diel, has been sighted in the Palborough Mines. If you seek him out, he may make you an apprentice...

Walkthrough

Completing this quest will allow you to change to the Dark Knight job.

Gumbah is on the 2nd Floor of the mines in a house. He sends you to Palborough Mines. You might have to talk to him a few times before he does, but eventually you will see a cutscene with Werei and Volker which talks about the Palborough Mines.

Once there, board the ship on the third floor at (H-8) and you will receive a two-handed sword. Equip the sword and start killing things. You need to kill at least 100 enemies with the sword in any area. Only Warriors and Dark Knights can equip the sword. Once you kill at least 100 enemies by dealing them the final blow with the sword, go to Beadeaux and a cut scene will be triggered that flags you as a Dark Knight.

NOTE: Do not kill an enemy with a weapon skill, as it will not count toward the 100 you need.

Laying it out,.,
# Apr 17 2006 at 1:27 PM Rating: Decent
Bassically buy lvl 1 "Bow" and normal "Wooden Arrows" stack of 99 or 99 Darts. (to keep track on how many things you have killed)

you can kill the 100 things anywhere with the chaosbringer (Warrior/Dark Knight only sword) (I did myne in Sandy) #! Don't use Weapon Skills !#

For this i used.. Warrior / Bard seems like an odd choice but my warrior is only level 6 but with Bard it gives me Valor Minuet (Damage increase song) wich helped i also bought a stack of Meat Mithkabob. Didn't take as long as i thought it would.. But u can Log out and Zone the Sword keeps a record of how many things u have killed.

I'm trying your method, but i have a thought... Does anyone know if the death counts for the sword if the initial ranged attack kills the mob without me even drawing the sword, as long as i have Chaosbringer equipped as my main? I would say not, but this game has suprised me with its quirks in the past...

OK, I was wanting to be a dark knight, but...is drk/war a bad idea? I have no idea, I'm rather new to the game, but know what I want to be later on, or should I level blm and go drk/blm? Or does it not really matter one way or the other >.> >.< <.<

DRK/WAR is the favourable and probably the best for a little while. DRK/BLM is essentially useless.

So, an LS buddy told me you can't zone before you get the 100 kills or else you will have to start over...is this true?

This is not true. You can zone all you want, log out, etc. and the sword will not lose track. I miscounted when doing this quest originally, went to Beadeaux and was saddened when I didn't get the cutscene. I left and headed back to Gustaberg, killed ten more mobs, and tried again- it worked.

On a side note, if you throw away your Chaosbringer and later want to upgrade it to the Deathbringer...it's possible to get a new Chaosbringer by returning to the mine, but you'll have to kill 200 mobs instead of 100. Apparently dropping the sword resets the count, though nothing else seems to.

Not sure if this was mentioned in one of the many pages of this thread, but here is a clarification that would have saved me some time.

You can zone into Beadeaux as any job/level, but you MUST have the chaosbringer in your inventory when you get there or the cutscene will not activate. I went as a RDM36/BLM18 (for warp) and was able to get the cutscene once I went back to jeuno to pick up the sword I put in my MH. >_>

hey guys im fairly new to the game but i am a black mage level 11 right now. i plan on becoming a level 30 BLM within 3 weeks or so but i really want to be a dark knight. i have been reading your posts about how you need to bea warrior to equip the sword for the DRK mission. Can someone give me advice on the best way i can become a dark knight? i was thinking level 30 black mage and making a quick level 7 warrior to do the mission?

i did this quest as 30 blm lol, you war can be lvl 1 it doesnt matter, you just need to be lvl 30 when you get the quest and when you end it i belive, but all your kills must be with the chaosbringer sword

Personally, I didn't have WAR lvled in the slightest when I recieved the sword. I'm a WHM by trade. Killing 100 thing wasn't too hard (I didn't die once) but it took -forever- and made every melee player I know cringe as they watched.

Chaosbringer is not even close to being a good sword for either class (as I'm told by the same melee's). The quest is geared more for the lvl 30 war to go out and slaughter 100 or so too weak critters. My suggestion is when you go to kill those 100:
1) Keep track somewhere. The sword won't let you know when you've hit 100.
2) Go to your home zone. East/West Ron, East/West Saru, North/South Gusta. Kill the 100 there. Less chance of death.

And as a note... I got to lvl 5 war in the course of kill 100 mobs.

Eventually you will probably want to level WAR higher but your plan is good for now. You just need WAR to be leveled at least a bit so you dont have problems getting the 100 kills to break the sword in.

This quest got a tiny bit harder after the 12/12/2005 update.

You can't use the tricks like "swapping in a 1 handed sword" to reduce the delay - the update corrected that glitch when the "engage/disenage" fix was made.

If you have a lot of mobs in a row, you'll have to keep hitting your attack button (ctrl+A or what ever macro you use) until the full 666 delay is up. You can't instantly engage like you used to be able to.

To answer some other questions:

1. You don't need to be WAR30 to finish this, just 30 in any job. To equip the sword, you must be WAR. I did it as WAR10 and had no problems.

2. You don't need to be WAR when you enter Beadeaux for the cut scene. I was WHM74, entered, and got the cut-scene with Zeid. Job unlocked!

3. Make sure you actually kill the beasties with the sword. I think most people have problems because Dia, a weapon skill, a ranged attack, or bomb/self-destruct/final-sting killed the monster.

Have fun!

An easy way to count for me was to equip a stack of darts (99) and engage each mob using Ranged Attack instead of Provoke. When you run out of darts, you know you only need to kill one more mob for 100.

Also, it was a nice way to start leveling Throwing Skill.

I thought that being a Monk would inhibit me getting DRK but reading these forums i see taht i can change jobs after i get the quest and the weapon. This will probably be the last of the advance jobs i go for but so far i have 3: DRG, SAM, and BST, and am working on BRD atm. Over the next week i will be working on getting all the jobs so that i know what to do in order to help others in my LS. But i see going for SMN will be the hardest, well not hardest but most time consuming, of all.

This is my first posting so I hope I get this right.

I did the Dark Knight quest last night and found it very easy.

I got the quest as a level 30 RDM and had no problems in the mines and got the sword. I returned to Bastok and changed to a Level 13 WAR and used my WHM as sub. Killed the 100 mobs, getting disconnected a few times in the process, but the count was not lost. I then went to Beaudeaux, got the cut-scene and I am now a Dark Knight.

All I know is you have to kill the mob with a strike of the sword, no WS or magic, no falling over from Dia or such like.

This is so easy, why are people always asking questions about it?

Ive seen plenty of ppl complain about 100 mobs taking too long.... this is the easiest way to do it:

As a WAR, (most ppl who plan on being a DRK already have WAR lvled to 30) take Chaosbringer and train Mobs In South Gustaburg, preferably Huge Hornets. To do this, because the sword is to weak, simply hit a Hornet, switch targets to a different Hornet, and repeat until you have 10-15 Hornets on your tail. You prolly wont have time to get more than that because after a while the Hornets start to give up on you and go on about thier business. So I usually stop around 10-15.

After youve gathered the Hornets, pick one of them and attack. If done properly, you will kill it and auto-target another. This will bypass the Delay of the Chaosbringer, adding a <Hundred Fists> effect the the Sword.

Repeat this process and kill 100-120 (I kill more just incase of miscount) in 30-45 minutes.

I've been Doing this with my WAR - 24 with WHM subbed I found that casting DIA on 3 things Provoke on one and then going to kill a worm and standing so that all of the monsters are in your view.

If you do this then you will not have to wait for the Delay time on the sword before striking he will just keep doing it as soon as it auto targets.
hmmm

Im not level 30 yet, but is it possible as WAR to use Berserk and have a 1 hit ko (the deathblow being an actual strike of the GSD)?

LittleMic posted this below, and I was going to reply, but I wanted to move it to the top so more people would see it:

Quote:
And the trick i used :
Use 2 swords and macro to change equip
I personnaly used a Wax Sword +1 around San d'Oria.
One hit with the One handed sword : -15 hp
/equip main "Chaosbringer"
One hit with Chaosbringer : -5 hp, one dead rabbit
/equip main "Wax Sword +1"
Find next victim and wait for attack command recast:-)

The beauty of the trick is that it is the delay of the one hand sword that is applied between the hits.

I used the same trick with a bronze axe to see if it works because everyone I talked to in game was certain that it wouldn't. I went outside bastok and carefully counted 105 kills (to be safe), 15 of which were done using the above method because I didn't want to start over completely if it didn't work. Then, I zoned to beadeaux, and... it worked.

I would definitely recommend this trick to anyone who is doing this quest because it is much, much faster than killing the enemies with just chaosbringer. Just be careful that you don't kill the mob outright with the first hit... >.>

This quest.

This quest is pretty easy.

Make sure you are atleast war 30. Talk to Gumbah in Bastok Mines near alchemy guild. Go to Palbourough Mines 3rd level. Take the boat near H-8. Kill 100 mobs with Chaosbringer equiped. Go to Beadeaux, upon entering Beadeaux you will get a cutscene and become a drk.

A couple hints. 1.) level greatsword a bit before you do this, 2.) kill mobs just outside Bastok so you can choco from Bastok to Beadeaux. I made the mistake of going to my usual farming grounds just outside Windy then having to go the long way.

Don't hold me to it but I don't think killing the mobs with greatsword WS will affect your totals. I was doing this once I got Hard Slash and I only killed a total of 110 mobs probably 25 with WS and I still completed the quest. Also I had thf subbed and was SA'ing as much as possible for the extra damage. So this leads me to believe that as long as you're using Chaosbringer and only do damage with it that you're fine.

Good luck.

You do not have to be level 30 WAR to get the sword. You just need to use a WAR while killing the 100 monsters because WAR is the only class that can equip the Chaosbringer (other than DRK, which you obviously wouldn't have.)
Getting Cutscene
# Jun 13 2005 at 10:03 PM Rating: Decent
I have killed 100 mobs with the Chaosbringer. Do I need to be a WAR with the sword equipped when I go to Beadeaux for the cutscene? The reason I ask is because my WAR is only level 5. Thank you for any help.

#REDACTED, Posted: May 11 2005 at 11:28 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) This is my opinion, but the Game Staff should remove the triple 6 off the sword's delay. It's just that the number goes against my religion and i've heard a couple people complain about it also and wont unlock DRK because of it.
Clearing Up Info
# May 03 2005 at 9:48 PM Rating: Decent
Ok here it is. I have checked this quest a million times only to find out the same conclusions. People ask the same questions and state the same false information. Here it is in a nut shell. Once you reach lvl 30 with ANY JOB you can go and get the quest for the NPC who starts it. After gettint the quest you equip the GS that is given to you with your war due to the fact that only a war and drk can equip it. After equiping the weapon you then proceed to kill ANY 100 mobs as long as you kill them with the sword and it has to be a strike of the sword. WS kills do not count and if u have whm subbed and u dia it and the mob falls to the ground that doesnt count toward your 100 kill counter. You can subb whm and heal yourself, you can zone and you can even log out. Just make sure to keep you kills counted and only the kills that you obtained by striking the mob with the rare Great Sword you gain from the quest. Then after you have gotten 100 kills zone into Beadeaux from the marshlands. Soon as you zone there should be a cut screen. After it is over congrulations you can be a dark knight! Good luck and hope this solves all the forum issues!!

The trick with the bees is that they use Final Sting. If they die from that, then they don't count as one of the hundred kills.

Or kill 100 and keep count, maybe +10, but 50 is too much, dont you think?

And i dont know what this has to do with this guy's post.
