Summary

Zeid, the sole master of the way of the Dark Knight in Vana'diel, has been sighted in the Palborough Mines. If you seek him out, he may make you an apprentice...

Walkthrough

Completing this quest will allow you to change to the Dark Knight job.

Gumbah is on the 2nd Floor of the mines in a house. He sends you to Palborough Mines. You might have to talk to him a few times before he does, but eventually you will see a cutscene with Werei and Volker which talks about the Palborough Mines.

Once there, board the ship on the third floor at (H-8) and you will receive a two-handed sword. Equip the sword and start killing things. You need to kill at least 100 enemies with the sword in any area. Only Warriors and Dark Knights can equip the sword. Once you kill at least 100 enemies by dealing them the final blow with the sword, go to Beadeaux and a cut scene will be triggered that flags you as a Dark Knight.

NOTE: Do not kill an enemy with a weapon skill, as it will not count toward the 100 you need.

My Tactic
# Aug 10 2004 at 11:33 AM Rating: Decent
Well having been a WHM since I joined I never really leveled my non-mage class skill past 5-7. And since I'm a taru I never felt like going WAR but this quest made me use him so I guess I cant leave my WAR at 1 forever. Anyway, so many different people saying so many different things here on the boards. My tactic is probably the worsr one to use but I'll work for me. What is it you may ask? Well... lets just say that today my day will be spent killing bees and rarabs and mandys non-stop. No count no nothing. If i die, i die. I'll zone. I wont log though, cuz i never do.

I did this as a level 1 war with no great-sword skill. It took about 3 hours. A few points: 1). Your kill counter cannot be reset in any way. You can zone. You can logout. You can die. As long as the mob is killed with the sword you can never lose that kill as being counted. 2). After your 100 kills, it's perfectly okay to switch jobs and then head to Beadeux to finish the quest. 3). I highly recommend bringing along some meat mithkabobs or meat chiefkabobs, makes it go much faster. 4). It's very easy to loose track of how many you killed. Make sure you pay attention so you don't make yourself kill more than necessary because you forgot a bunch of kills. :-)

Agh, well, I tried this, have killed over 100 mobs with that awful sword, and don't get the cut scene when entering Beadeaux.

I was 400 exp into level 5 (1100 exp from level 6...) and didn't go to Beadeaux until I counted 102 kills with the sword. No cutscene. Went back to S. Gusta and killed 10 more mobs. Back to Beadeaux. No cutscene. I got level 6 and then some through this (killing mobs that are worth 12 exp each.) so I'm pretty sure that I killed at least 100 mobs. I listened to what this poster said and assumed I could zone into Bastok (I zoned in after the first twenty kills to switch subjobs.)

I've been doing this for apx 3-4 hrs now and I'm tired of it. I suppose I'll never unlock the job, I'm not killing another 100 bees. ; ;

I never know who to listen to on these boards, soem say you can zone, some say you can't. It didn't work for me, that's all I know.

I'll point out that I did go to Beadeaux with a different job (blm, not lvl 6 war... I was pretty sure I would never make it to Beadeux with a level 6 War. That little squirrely spot right before the zone to Beadeaux makes it really hard to sneak past quadavs. And I wanted to ride a birdy.) but according to this guy you can do that. So... yeah.

To summarize, zoning while killing and going to Beadeaux with a different job didn't work for me. I quit? haha.

(I'll probably try killing some more bees tomorrow and see if my kill count was just really screwed up. If I actually get the cutscene someday, I'll...uh let you know.)

I also was a few hundred into level 5 after having killed 100 mobs. I also zoned into Bastok after killing about 25 mobs to pick up some more meat chiefkabobs. And, I too switched to my blm to zone into Beadeaux. I'm not sure why you're not getting the cutscene. I'd suggest just trying to kill some more mobs, it's very easy to lose count. Good luck! ><

You need to go to palaborough mines in N. Gustaberg, then get to the boat on the upper level, and take it to Zeruhn mines.

He was there when I got off the boat.

Been said before, but this worked for me:
Use your warrior for this:
Take a shortbow and 2 stacks of wooden arrows with you - Shoot arrows until you find the mobs you CANNOT kill with one shot, switch to the 99 arrow stack, shoot one arrow per mob and deal finishing blow with sword - when you are done with the stack you will only have one mob to kill to make 100
However, very important - make sure you CANNOT kill the mob with one arrow, if you do, keep track, because you will have to kill another mob with sword to keep your cout accurate

Process:

Bored late one night. (two nights ago, specifically) Ask DiamondCityRansom how to do Dark Knight quest. Redtide, having just completed the quest, is obliged to help while he is farming for God-knows-what.

Ten minutes later. Brought my bad level 30 Monk down to bastok and talked to Gumbah. I was told to talk to him twice. First time, got a semi-cutscene. Second time, some blather about The Great Somebody teaching the Iron Whatever-er how to fight. Third time (since I'm persistent), same message.

Went to Palborough. Rode the boat. Nothing. Redtide says I must've screwed up. Fair enough. Talked to Gumbah again. Got another cutscene. Went through the mine trip (albeit a bit faster), got a cutscene after the boat, and my new least favorite weapon this side of the Orcish Axe. Cool.

Ten minutes later again, I am a level 10 Warrior with the Chaosbringer, muttering about how creative it -wasn't- to give the sword 666 delay. I make absolutely -sure- what I am to do, and am informed that I stay in one place, kill using the sword, and only the sword. No using crossbow and then finishing with the sword, no skills, nothing.

102 kills later I haul back to Beadeaux with (pay attention) my level 10 Warrior and am awarded my not-so-hard-worked-for Dark Knight job. Easy as that.

If you want to eat something stupid, I suggest spicy nacho Doritos dipped in mayonaise. Sure, you could get stupider, but you didn't say you wanted to eat something *really* stupid.

I am 30 kills into it, yay...

This sword sucks more *** than anyhting I can ever imagine. As a taru hand-2-hand with only L1 skill I kill mandagoras in 1 hit... so I have to use the sword to kill. Even with meat tarukabobs it only hits for 4-5 dmg. 10 swings later, after I shower and shave, make coffee, and walk the cats, he is dead, or almost. Slowwwwwwwwwwly I get to 100. 2 stacks of wind crystals though!

at lvl 30 you will draw aggro in the mines on the 3rd floor...if you want to play it safe use a silent oil when u get to the top of the elevator, and you will be fine....in bedeaux you wont even have to do anything...pretty much as soon as you zone in you get a cutscene...

as for the 100 kills...DUCK SOUP...go to some low lvl area like West Saru, or S. Gustaberg...even though the damage of the Chaosbringer sucks you will get 100 kills in about 20 min

dont sweat it...

The one thing that has not been mentioned is... how difficult is getting throgh the mines? and through Beadeux??? I gave up on PLD quest temporarily and figured I'd try this one. Hopefully the hard part with this is the 100 kills. I played in the mines before and had no problem... that was at lvl 20, so Im assuming at 30 this will be cake.

I do have to say this... asked someone the other night if I could tag along to go get the sword and they said no.... you might want to turn your mentor sign off then! I coudl see if I was asking you to go out of your way, but asking to follow along on the quest in separate parties... I wish you many trains :-)
What counts?

Bastok Mines
1) Speak to Gumbah (J-7) inside a house on the upper level. You may have to talk to him a few times to get the cut scene. Head to Palborough Mines.
Palborough Mines
2) East to G-8, North to a small room in G-7, East to H-7, turn South and follow the twists and turns of this path till you come to the elevator at I-8. Board the elevator and throw the lever near its door to ride it up. (If the elevator is not there already interact with the lever to call it down.)
3) Get off the elevator and head West, then South through a small room and you will be at the docks (H-8).
4) Hop on a boat and pull the lever. This will zone you into Zeruhn Mines and trigger the cut scene with Zeid.
Zeruhn Mines
5) You should now have Chaosbringer (WAR DRK only great sword). Head South, then East back to Bastok Mines.
6) Many different schools of thought here as to working the mobs down with other weapons/spells, but ultimately you must land the killing blow on 100 mobs with the Chaosbringer. Some mob's suicide final attack will not count nor will it count if the mob dies due to poison, dia, etc.
7) You've landed the killing blow on 100+ mobs with your Chaosbringer, now head off to Beadeaux. (It lies off the South East corner of Passhow Marshlands.)
Beadeaux
8) Take your bloody Choabringer and zone into Beadeaux and get the cut scene that gives you the flag to be able to switch to DRK. If you did not get the cut scene then most likely its because you did NOT indeed make the killing blow on 100 mobs with the Chaosbringer.
NOTE: Zoning does not affect your count. Getting disconnected does not affect your count. Switching jobs should have no affect on the count. Zoning into Beadeaux with a job thats under lvl 30 should have no affect.

Remember: Blade of Death Quest can be done to upgrade the rather worthless Choasbringer into a really good lvl 5 great sword!!
Blade of Death
1) Talk to Gumbah. (You dont have to take the note to Zeid as he implies.)
2) Kill 100 more mobs.
3) Go to Gusgen Mines. (Off of the East side of Konschtat Highlands.)
Gusgen Mines
Sneak and Invisi may be needed so take caution.
4) Zone into Gusgen Mines and take every available right turn. (One right turn leads into a dead end so turn around and keep going right from there.) You will end up in a small room with a pool of water in the end of it.
5) Trade the Choasbringer to the ??? in the pool and it will give you back the upgraded sword called Deathbringer (DRK only Lvl: 5 DMG: 20 Delay: 466 Attack +8 DEF -6). The Deathbringer will serve you well into the upper teens as a DRK.

Edit: Looked up some additional info about the Deathbringer and it's stats.

easy way to kill 100 mobs
# Jun 28 2004 at 3:00 PM Rating: Decent
a simple and easy way to finish this quest fast is to get a blm or rdm friend that is around lvl 20-25 and have them run around casting poison on bees and bats in south gustaberg, by the time they have 15-20 and bring them back to you they'll be halfway or 3/4 of the way dead and can be killed in 1-2 hits. i'm Daikishii on shiva and i'll be willing to help out any future drk, just send me a tell.

I was thinking just now, and I don't think it matters if you zone or not. Think about it - you have to zone a few times to get to Beadeaux after you get the 100. If it reset, then you'd always end up there with 0 unless you killed there.

heres a question...I started this quest as a lvl30 WAR, I killed the neccesary Mobs and went back to the Galka kid who you go to start the quest and then forgot about the quest...

Now as a lvl22 PLD I travel to Beaudox with the Chaos Bringer in hand and I'm not getting a cut scene. Do I have to go there as my lvl30 job class?

A river runs on the top floor. Between the 2 bridges over it, there's a dock. That dock has a low cargo boat-thingy. Stand on it, pull the lever on the dock, and enjoy the ride.

You don't want to do it with someone beating on you though... you need to answer a question, so anything hitting you will interrupt the event.
