Summary

Zeid, the sole master of the way of the Dark Knight in Vana'diel, has been sighted in the Palborough Mines. If you seek him out, he may make you an apprentice...

Walkthrough

Completing this quest will allow you to change to the Dark Knight job.

Gumbah is on the 2nd Floor of the mines in a house. He sends you to Palborough Mines. You might have to talk to him a few times before he does, but eventually you will see a cutscene with Werei and Volker which talks about the Palborough Mines.

Once there, board the ship on the third floor at (H-8) and you will receive a two-handed sword. Equip the sword and start killing things. You need to kill at least 100 enemies with the sword in any area. Only Warriors and Dark Knights can equip the sword. Once you kill at least 100 enemies by dealing them the final blow with the sword, go to Beadeaux and a cut scene will be triggered that flags you as a Dark Knight.

NOTE: Do not kill an enemy with a weapon skill, as it will not count toward the 100 you need.

Bastok Mines
1. Speak to "Gumbah" in J-7 upper area, inside a house. You have to speak to him more than once to activate the quest. After the cutscene, head to Palborough Mines.

Palborough Mines
2. Head east to G-8
3. Turn north and head to G-7 (small room)
4. Head east. Turn south at H-7 and keep straight until you arrive at the elevator at I-8, ride the elevator up.
5. Head west, then south through a small room and you'll be at the Docks at H-8. Hop a boat and pull the lever. The boat will "zone" you into Zeruhn Mines, where the cutscene with Zeid starts automatically. (be sure to have a spot open in your inventory) Obtain: Chaosbringer

Zeruhn Mines
6. After the cutscene, head south, then east back to Bastok Mines.

The sword "Chaosbringer" is WAR/DRK only, you must get the killing blow on 100 foes with the sword in order to sate it's desire for bloodlust. (and to complete the quest)^^

Once you have killed your 100+ foes, (I killed 110 to be certain I didn't miscount) head to Beadeaux. Upon zoning in,(if you have indeed killed at least 100 enemies with the sword) a cutscene starts automatically. Once the cutscene concludes, you obtain the ability to become a Dark Knight! Congratulations!

From here, I recommend either an instant warp scroll or warp spell. Good Luck!^^
drk question
# Feb 28 2004 at 4:07 PM Rating: Default
I want to be a drk but I've been using a great axe because it does more damage than a sword was doing for me. Should I switch back to the sword, even though the axe does more damage?
Also, do I have to be a blm to do this quest?

When you level WAR, keep your Great Axe WS maxed. When you level DRK, keep Great Sword and Scythe maxed.

You do not need the sword equipped when you walk into Beadeaux you just have to have it in your inventory. I know because I walked in as my level 31 monk/15 war and it worked for me, just some advice...

After listening to a friend of mine I wasted a hour of killing stuff with my BOOMERANG with the sword equiped. Sigh.. Never listen to your friends, ever. As stated a billion times before you must do the final hit with the sword.. sigh back to killing.
Hope This Helps...

If a monster suicides, like a bee's final sting attack or a Goblin that dies from his own bomb, it dosent count as a kill for you. I've heard rumors that weaponskill kills dont count either but im not positive on that one.
When i did this quest i really didnt have any problems, I kill like 20 things in Zehurn mines and like 90 things in South Gusta over a 2-day spanm, entered Beadeauzx as my lev 9 war,(Ran like Hell) and got the cutscene. Been leveling Drk ever since.

About WS not counting
# Feb 20 2004 at 3:46 AM Rating: Default
after each correct kill you do for your 100 kills with the sword,
you hear a little tune, usually just a ding or something but when you are at your 100 kills
check it by killing some enemys and listening to some sort of chimes or ding sound, if it does show off, your not at 100 yet :)

The only "ding" I heard after (or before) 100 kills where from bats and the sound of my weapon being put away.

Yes, I actually miscounted a couple so I was killing enemies in the Wastelands before entering Beadeaux. I also had my main weapon equipped when I finished and got the cutscene.. your kills will count as long as you finish the mob off with the blade, any zone.
easy in 3 hours
# Feb 17 2004 at 10:37 PM Rating: Excellent
i did this quest in 3 hours easy! when i got the sword, i insta-warped back to windurst and went out to fight really easy monsters as a WAR30/MNK15. what i did was find a mob and provoke it while looking for another one to kill with the sword. after killing it, i looked for another to provoke and kill with a sword. so there would be no delay to draw the sword and it only takes 30 secs to kill the monster.
i did this until i had 10 monsters chasing me and i start to kill them. when one is killed, it auto-targets to another without the delay! very easy!
you'll have your share of idiots killing your monsters so try to be in an area very secluded with lots of mobs spawning.

Wanted to share this info here! Me and a friend were doing the DRK quest together. Keeping count and keeping tabs at each others' count. We each killed 105 critters. I was lv30 WAR he was lv15 WAR (his lv30 job was MNK). When we went to Beadeaux, the cutscene started for me but not for him! He somehow found out that kills done by Weapon Skills don't count! I didn't have any GSword ws so I didn't have a problem.
The true way to fnish the quest
# Feb 10 2004 at 2:58 PM Rating: Decent
The trick to finish the quest fast:
1.Lv30 or above WAR needed,GS skill capped
2.Equip a bow (or any ranged weapons) which would sufferely injured the mob but not killing it.
3.Pull as many mosnters as you could on you using the bow.
4.Kill them all at once.

The reasons:
1.To kill the mob fast and to take less damage.
2.The damage on the sword sucks and huge delay, its good to make sure that u can 1-hit most of them.
3.Arrows help you keep count so you will never lost count.
4.Auto target switch built-in,shorten the delay for having to pull out the sword every time.

Hope this help

When I talked to Zeid in the Mines my Inventory was full. I didn't know you took the boat to find him.
Anyway, it said "Could not obtain Chaosbringer" is there any way of repeating this thing to get another one?

There is a follow-up to this quest called "The Blade of Death."

I've only just gotten it to trigger - talk to Gumbah and you'll get a letter from Zeid. Read it and you'll get vague instructions on how to proceed.

I'll submit this quest officially now.

Just go back to palborough, take the boat again, and you'll get another sword. Friend of mine who did the quest, got DRK, then dropped the sword rode back with me once as a shortcut and got the sword again.

#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 21 2004 at 2:01 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The quest is by far the easiest adv job quest in the game. you genius's just need to keep a tally of what you kill in zeruhn. when you count 100 mobs...kill a few extra just to make sure you arent a dumbass at adding. And always kill with the chaosbringer, it WILL NOT COUNT otherwise so dont whine that you have no cutscene in beadeaux or whatever. Secondly after you rape these n00bs mobs in zeruhn just go to beadeaux and zied will be waiting for you. He tells you that you 0wn and that drk is now unlocked. Yes, the sword blows major *** but just deal with it cuz the noob mobs suck anyway

Anyone who wasn't a warrior with this quest will have a rather difficult time completing it as teh sword is horrible with damage and the delay is monstrous.

I have a friend who was a blm taru who wanted to get drk. He died a couple times during this quest since his str/def were lower than your avg warrior. Just do what was said below. A low dam weapon to get em close to dead, then switch to the G sword and finish it off.
Killing Blow
# Jan 16 2004 at 7:44 AM Rating: Decent
For each of my 100 kills, I weakened the enemy down to one hit with a bronze dagger and then switched to the Chaosbringer to finish them off. I highly recommend this method. If you time it correctly, you can even get in a quick blow with the Chaosbringer at the shorter delay of the dagger, so you never have to go through the 666 delay. I never used the sword for anything other than delivering deathblows. After that I switched back to 31 whm, took a chocobo up to Beadeaux, and finished the quest. I can personally verify 1,4, and 5 from cuddlywuddly's post below.

I posted this in the forums, but since these messages are sticky, I'll also reprint here to make sure this info gets to anyone who needs it.

Myth 1: You need High Fame in addition to level 30 to get the quest.
FALSE - Gumba might not give you the quest cinema the first time, he didn't give me the quuest the first time either.. I just went outside the house, turned around and talked to him again a few times then poof! Quest

Myth 2: If you Delevel to 29, you cannot complete the quest.
FALSE - I deleveled after getting the first cinema and I was still given the chaosbringer after boarding the boat in the mines. Heck, I'm still level 29 and I completed the quest and am a DRK now.

Myth 3: You cannot zone out of the mines! You need to kill 100 there!
FALSE - You can zone, warp, die, do the panic dance.. whatever you want. I killed 100 worthless enemies in gustaburg and bastok mines to get my 100. (Kills in multiple zones count!!)

Myth 4: You need the killing blow with the sword for it to count.
TRUE!! - Although you can use debuffs like poison and you can use weapon skills the final hit MUST be with the chaosbringer for it to count. If the creature suicides with final sting / bomb / etc you will not get credit for the kill.
I learned this the hard way, after counting out 100 pennies I forgot about this and also counted the kills from spells and suicides and ended up having to go get another 10 kills to finish the quest.

Myth 5: You need to have the sword equipped when you enter Beadeaux.
FALSE - I did my killing as a level 8 warrior turned back into a BLM, hopped on my bird and went to the swamps. Got the scene the moment I entered the Beadeaux zone. If you don't get the scene.. you miscounted, go kill more with the sword.
DRK Quest - accurate info
# Jan 08 2004 at 1:30 PM Rating: Decent
I just finished this quest, there's alot of wrong information on this page, so let tell you guys what I did.
First, I reached level 30 with black mage, went to Palborough, got the sword, went to Bastok and switched to warrior.
This is the important part, you ARE ALLOW TO ZONE AND TO LOG, your kills will still count. Here's how I know. I got the quest around 3am, killed about 10, then I logged. The next day I killed around 20 more and my game crashed, I think that counts as logging, around 40 kills I decided to go back into town to buy armor. After killing 100, I killed 10 more just to make sure I didn't miscount. Went back into Bastokmines and got a chocobo to Beadeaux, got the cutscene and the job Dark Knight.
As for the sword, it's the "chaosbringer"... war/drk only, level: 1, damage: 3, delay: 666... that's just from memory so may not be entirely correct. As you guessed, the sword is a piece of crap. Have fun killing 100 mobs with it, it takes a while.

Do the mobs have to be a challenge... sorta like the conquest points they have to give exp to get the points... is that how it is or can you just mass slaughter worms and stuff like that????

Yeah if you could be WAR as sub-job to equip the sword then you could be a White mage/Warrior in Full plate using a 2 handed great axe.....
???
# Jan 05 2004 at 5:29 PM Rating: Default
Do you have to c a certain lvl to equip this "sword"? like do i actually have to lvl up my warrior to do this?
RE: ???
# Jan 06 2004 at 7:55 PM Rating: Default
well duh, chances are need to be lvl 30
RE: ???
# Jan 07 2004 at 2:21 PM Rating: Default
Nope, the sword is lvl 1. The only reason you'd want to level up your warrior is so you can kill 100 really easy enemies - this sword really, really sucks... 3 dmg, 666 delay? You can have any job at 30, but you have to do the 100 kills with WAR.

Don't want to be fighting anything challenging with that equipped.
