Chocobo Racing Discussion

The FINAL FANTASY XI development team would like to hear your thoughts about one of the upcoming parts of Chocobo Raising, the highly anticipated Chocobo Racing. Therefore, we're opening discussions on the Zam Network here so the team can hear your thoughts and ideas about how to make Chocobo Racing as enjoyable as possible.

Greetings everyone,

After the Chocobo Raising announcement was made recently, we received many comments and requests about Chocobo Racing. This surprised us, so we decided that we'd use this space to ask for more input about Chocobo Racing from all of you, so that we can make this feature as good as possible. Like Chocobo Raising, this is a new feature developed completely from scratch, unlike the job and battle features which have been our main focus until now. Therefore, we want to include your hopes and dreams in order to make this feature meet everyone's vision as closely as possible.

At the same time, there are many of you who might say "We haven't played it yet, what are we supposed to suggest?!" Therefore, we have decided to include some of the mechanics of this new feature, outlined below. Please use them as a guide to imagine what Chocobo Racing could be like.

Currently Planned Specifications:

  • The ability of raised chocobos will be reflected during Chocobo Racing.
  • Chocobos will not be controllable by players during Chocobo Racing.
  • It is possible to give orders (i.e. sprint ahead, come from behind, etc) to riders before the race.

While posting your comments onto the forum, we would appreciate any ideas related to "gambling" for example, as well as any other opinions or concerns regarding Chocobo Racing.

I believe the chocobos should be modeled after FFVII as closely as possible. The color of your choco should signify something related to it's stats/abilities other than someone simply thinking, "I like this color."

I agree that chocobo stats/abilities should only be apparent during a race. Riding a chocobo to a camp spot with your party could get rather annoying when everyones' chocobo is running at a different speed. /follow wouldn't work very well, especially when traveling long distances.

A point system should be created for races. A player would obtain points based on what place he/she finished the race, first place awarding the highest amount. The points could then be exchanged for items related to your chocobo only, meaning no items/armor a player could use for him/herself. Such items could include standard items already available/created for chocobo use such as the various types of food. Chocobo specific potions could be created that temporarily raise stamina, endurance, etc. Also items that you can equip on your chocobo like the saddlebags mentioned in another post, higher quailty/more durable reigns, maybe even a type of body armor (cloth or leather) that would cover the feathers decreasing wind resistence, thereby increasing speed.

To prevent players from throwing a race for gambling purposes, the option of controling your chocobo during a race should not be allowed. However, a player should be able to use the potions mentioned above during a race. Possibly other abilities could be given to a player during a race as well with the exception of directly being able to control the speed and direction.

The amount of gil a player can bet on a chocobo race should vary with the maximum being 20,000gil. However, a ranking system should be put in place which controls this. Similar to the points system above, raking system which reflects a player's ability to race. Rank ups would come after accumulating a certain number of points from finishing races or by completing certain objectives during a race. A beginner may only be able to bet a maximum of 1,000gil per race, and increase per rank up.

The number of chocobos participating in a single race should be 8. Racing against NPCs with their own chocobs should be an option, as well as selecting a difficulty level to race in. Of course racing at an ametuer level would award much fewer rank/racing points than at a more advanced level. Random players should be able to get in the same race together by entering by the start time. If the number of PC participating in a race is fewer than 8, the difference should be made up by NPCs.

The NPCs which can appear randomly as competitors should include a 'dreaded' competitor, i.e. someone a player will be nervous about racing against due to this NPC's chocobo being notoriously hard to beat.

Another option of racing your chocobo directly against another player should also be incorporated, much like doing a PvP event.

The ability to race should occur often, perhaps 3 times per game hour. Fewer than that and people will lose interest in it quickly after the 'newness' of the event wears off. Waiting is not fun.

I suppose that's all I've got to say for now :p Just some ideas I believe will make breeding/racing more exciting.

Hearing of the gambling immediately made me think of "throwing races" for exploitive purposes. Either chocobos should be raced in a means that someone couldn't throw a race, some random factor must be involved in the win, or the gambling thing must be VERY tightly monitored. Couldn't this be solved by making the "purse" or the reward worth more than the ammount of money you could bet?

Regarding calling the Chocobo - I have always said that this was a good idea, like the lone ranger whistling for his horse. I do not think the use should be limited. Stays for a while and when tired, they split if you run them too hard. Maybe "Your Chocobo is tired and needs to rest / graze" so you let it relax for a few, get a drink or whatever. Chocobo gear (+ride time) and Chocobo demeanor should come into play, as well as food, and how well you take care of them. Letting your Chocobo drink in fishing spots should be a time extendor as well. I would say it would be nice to ride whenever you need it, but it's just very unrealistic.

Take the average ammount of time you party (2-3 hours?) and make that the "chocobo whistle" recharge time. Someone rides to a party, slaps the Chocobo on the bum, it hangs out and plays, grazes, whatever, and then you whistle and you head out.

How about Chocobo Saddle Bags? Leave some gear on your Chocobo and if you and your Chocobo hook up, you can get your food or potions from it, then send it on its way.

I love the idea of gambling. I think multiple tracks like a lot of people are almost a necessity since they'll be alot of crowding. Although it would be completly understandable if they took time to open like an under construction time to give SE time to work on more. Also I think any prizes should somehow be dispayable either on you or your choco or in your Mog House. Personally items on choco's should exist if they are more then aethestic then shouldn't aloud in the races or perhaps some sort of limitation that way people can have a small boost but in different ways; possibly in more advanced races. I want my jocky to be a Taru of some kind or the option of a taru T_T. I personally don't care if I could control my choco knowing my luck it would DC while was running and I'd log back to last place and my choco with a complex.
Now for maybe the only original idea I have maybe... You know how we have those rooms with passwords get in and make reservations; maybe we could have like that but closed races (only one ttrack existing reserved as well) So friends or ls mates could runn chocobo in friendly races obviously with training ups since that would be unfair. I think that would be fun.

I've been looking forward to riding the chocobo myself in the race, so I'm dissappointed to hear it might be automatic. Possibly add many tracks from a single one though. Reverse direction, different paths in the same area, different terrains, etc. Another idea I would like is to add some extra customizability into it, even if you only equip your chocobo with various saddles or accessories. If it will be impossible for your character to ride the chocobo, maybe let your npc fellow ride it instead? Finally, I'd like to suggest that perhaps the chocobo or jockey would have a temper to them, either mellow or possible jouvinile, which may affect their ability to respond to orders.

I was originally very excited to hear that you were introducing a chocobo racing part of the game, one of the only things I was excited about from this new expansion. Unfortunately "Chocobos will not be controllable by players during Chocobo Racing.". Now, I wonder who's brilliant idea this was? Obviously the same idiot behind the auto /attack combat.

Do you guys actually play your game? Because to me not controlling a video game is like watching a movie. I don't want to watch a movie unless I'm watching a movie. I personally don't mind cutscenes but this is supposed to be a video game and I expect to play it. All that I ask is that you at least have commands like speed up or move left right. I seriously don't get why you will not be able to control them unlike how freely you control them outside of racing.

Maybe I'm the only one who gives damn, but would it be that great to ask you to give us some control? Final Fantasy 11's gameplay would be significantly better if there was a manuel combat system that you could choose to use instead of the automatic one. I am also sure that it would be better if you let us actually race our chocobos! Hell, I don't even see why they have riders on them if it's going to be chocobo racing you cannot control.

Well i never was too hott on the chocobo racing idea. But its another thing to do so i cant complain.

-I think to make it as realistic as possible. Dont make it mechanized where its predictible. That way we dont see the same faces over and over again. Sorta like, a horse cant race 10897510975 times, after a while theres a time when it has to be put out to stud. So 1 person cant have a super chocobo that there just gonna throw out there over and over again with capped stats. A depreciative factor would be sweet.

Would do some cool stuff too, it would encourage "breeding" i guess. People will want to make the best chocobos and form stables.

-Another idea, and i dont think its knew, but make gambling odds based on whose racing. If you got a sweet chocobo and there preferred to win let the odds reflect that. Moreover, if there a underdog let the odds reflect that as well.

-I personally would like to see different kinds of races. Not just the borring around the track 1 time race. Maybe vary it. Could have "Sprints" just 1 lap around, or could have endurance races where there like 10 laps or 20 laps. that way just the shear sprint of a chocobo isnt the main factor. That way people can train there chocobos for different types of competition.

Now my fun ideas not with a chocobo that uses colluseum. I think these would be cool to do.

-Player vs Player that we can bet on. Sorta like gladiator. Ballista is too chaotic its 1 allaince vs another cant really watch people go at it. It would be sweet to be able to pit the servers best fighters 1 on 1 and be able to bet on it. have champions. With titles and everything. Grudge matches 2vs 2.. and yea i know what your gonna say "ballista thats what its for" i want to bet on my friends and win when they win lol. Ok end of this silly idea..

-I would love LOVE LOVE to be able to Player vs Player people as a monster. Like i mean i would seriously love to be able to play a monster like fafnir or something. that way we could all see what fafnir vs behemoth would be like. or kirin vs absolute virtue. Seems pretty far out there, but man that **** would be so much fun. Think about it, Jormugand vs Tiamat.. we all want to know who would win in a one on one brawl..

Controlling the Chocobo:
Give players a choice: They can hire a jockey (or use an adventuring fellow) and race the chocobo through AI control (and issued tactics before the race).OR ride the chocobo themselves like in FFVII and command the chocobo with commands like speed up, slow down etc. with a stamina bar.Maneuvering is not nescessary IMO so chocobos stay in their respective lanes. As for Hackers, I'm pretty sure that it would be easier to hack AI controlled Chocobos rather then manually controlled ones.

Calling your Chocobo:
There should be no recast time for the choco whistle, however, since players would use this to avoid aggro; you should only be able to call the chocobo if there are few mobs around. For some areas, you should only be able to call the chocobo if you've been there before on foot.

Gambling, Rankings and prizes etc:
I love these ideas as well as the Advertising Fame (you win and posters of you are out up in Jeuno etc.)mentioned by someone else. Mog House items such as plushies,tropies and/or posters would be great prizes along with chocobo/character equipment(to show off).
I'd also want the chocobo stadiums to exist in physical form.(no pursuivants or some such thing)and am looking forward to seeing other chocobo related (quests on Chocoback?) things similar to racing in the future.

I really like the idea of being able to raise chocobo and I think that being able to race them will take this idea to another level. I also heard someone say something about chocobo knight job. I think this would be really cool idea since you would get to raise your own chocobo and also you could have abilities like...summon chocobo, chocobo rush and other abilities like that

Gambling:
Obviously, a gambling system similar to real life horse racing would be best. Of cause the game has to collect all sorts of statistics about every chocobo, but since this is in a seperate Zone, i don't think it will be a big problem.

The only problem i see with a gambling system that is very close to real life is the possible problems with Anti Gambling organizations and the game rating. I know that no one in europe would care, but in the US this could cause some problems.

I know it's not real money but some smart lawyers could argue the fact that although it is monopoly money, it does in fact have a real life value.

Another solution would be to give prizes in the form of items for your chocobo or some sort of coupons/tickets that can be exchanged. Maybe we could bet with IS Points and win IS (Imperial Standing).

Maybe i am a bit too concerned about the gambling thing. I sure like to see some gambling and rewards for the winners and the winning chocobo.


Not controlling your Chocobo:
This is a good idea to prevent cheating and rigging races. I would however like to see at least some basic strategy you can set before the race. Something like:

Early Lead - Will use alot of stamina to take lead early.
Even Pace - Will balance his speed/stamina.
End Sprint - Will put all he has in the end sprint.


More than one Chocobo
I assume you will specifically breed a racer and breed a different one for your personal use. If you can always have just one chocobo, it will limit you to either breed one for Travel, Digging or Racing.

Gah... I hate the idea of having a "recast" timer on the chocobo. Quite honestly. For those that said, oh have ur recast time lower after calling it multiple times. Well here is the thing, if you do that, imagine how many times you are going to have to call it. And on a 24hr timer???? O.O What if you are the unlucky blooke that only gets 0.1 per call, thats going to stink something rotten. I think we should be able to call them whenever we want, I mean come on, running sucks, and it takes a long time to travel on foot. Yes we have airships, but they don't go everywhere. If it does have a recast timer, have it like flee. 5 minutes. That way you dont just get off, get on, get off, get on... Or... Have quests that lower the recast timer. I liked the idea of different level whistles. But instead of gaining/buy'n it by calling your chocobo a bazzilion times, have quests that you can do, WITH your chocobo, to obtain those lower recast whistles. And for God's sake, make them solo quests that take thought, not numbers. Or have a BCNM battle, similar to a Maat fight(LVL 20 SMN battles). Because if you do a numbers thing, once people get theirs, they wont want to help others. Thats how it works in FFXI.

As far as racing goes, I dont think we should control the chocobo. Featuring our characters on the chocobo would be cool, but control wouldn't be a good idea. Im sure placing our characters on the chocobo will cause some game memory issues, so i dont really mind having a hot mithra jockey instead! *lucky Chocobo* Anyways~ Its a givin that people will hack into the game, and cheat because they can. I think there should be prizes; maybe items/exp/gil. R/EX would be nice, but unless it cycles through new items every so often, people will just play to get each item and stop racing. And if you stop offering an item, people will be upset that you took it away before they got it too. I say, maybe we should have a point system(like the Battle Arena in FFVII). BUT, instead of giving prizes for individual races, maybe exchange accumulated points from races for gil, warp scrolls, exp!!!!, custom chocobo gear, orbs for BCNMs, mog house furnishings(trophies?), food, ect... Stuff that wont unbalance the game an aweful lot but still be fun to get.

As far as gambling goes~ I think it should be game regulated. However, with that said, we are going to run into issues where people will place bets, lose connection and lose their money. So please take measures to account for this. I know many people who have lost exp from besieged after a lost connection. Makes for a very angry croud. I also think there should be a cap on the amount placed. I read someones idea about a double or nothing bet, but i don't trust my gil in the hands of AI, especially if we have as little control over the race as indicated.

It sounds like it has the potential to be a lot of fun, I just hope it turns out for the best...

Rather than having the whole thing be AI contoled I'd like to see something like this:

1. Gas pedal(speed up bird)
2. Break button(slow down abit)
3. Stamina recovery(hold a button)
4. Sprint button(similar to FF7)

Now I don't think I'd let people control where the bird goes...unlike FF7...this is because I could see to many chashes and hangups. The birs would be stuck in their own lanes for the durration...

The chocobo racing sounds interesting, but at the same time, aren't we trying to make this game a little too much like Final Fantasy VII? Some of us weren't very big fans of the game, after all, but I'm not going to get into that. The racing sounds fun, but I think it would be best if players could ride their chocobos themselves... instead of relying on an NPC. After all, pre-programmed NPCs can't be as inventive as the human mind.

Another idea I had:

The concept of, essentially, chocobo knights has been on my mind since they mentioned the update. I think combat from chocobos in specific areas would be an amazing-not to mention popular-addition to Vana'diel. I can already imagine riding past an orc and taking its head off with one fell swoop. ^^

I would have thought the whole fun from this would have been the ability to control your own Chocobo?

I can't see me having any interest in this at all since that announcement, I had hoped to be able to raise my own Choc and then race it - with me controlling it by skill. It seems a real anticlimax to me.

I suppose it's because of people possibly hacking it of course, it's rather difficult to make certain if someone is doing so on a chocobo..

-Wider variety of foodto develop chocobos.
-Chocobo Stats to influence race outcome.
==Stamina/Endurance (to determine the length of time a chocobo can run)
==Speed
==Acceleration
==Recovery (from losing endurance)
==Comfort
==Control (maneuverability and racer control)
-Race Tracks or Battlefields designed for Chocobo Racing only.
-Rewards or Prizes for winning Chocobos (low in value obviously)


These would all make a great chocobo program and allow for capitalization. In short, VERY similar to the FFVII chocobo racing (which was SO much fun!).

I think Choco racing sounds good.
If there's gonna be a gambling area, where you set up races ect.. Maybe if its not impossible(probably is) let us play Tetra Master again each other.
Would be good to pass time while waiting on a race you didn't wanna bet on or some other thing. I'd be nice to involve Tetra into the Main game, and I think it would help the Racing/Gambling area. At least consider it! ^^

MAYBE SE SHOULD BUILD SOME SLOT MACHINES INSIDE THE STADIUM. PEOPLE CAN PLAY SLOT MACHINES BEFORE THE RACE START.

MAYBE SHOULD MAKE STADIUM AS THE CENTER OF ATTRACTION. START BUIDLING NEON-LIGHTS AROUND IT AND TURNS IT INTO A 'LAS VEGAS'!

TRY TO IMAGE A CITY WITH ALL NEON LIGHTS. IT LOOKS SO COOL!

personally i'd like to see a brand new system. while the FF7 chococo races which we all now & <3 was great we cant expect the same thing from somethin in which hundred of thousands of ppl play. id like to see a system with multiply ranks&race types. like maybe a choco drag race or a choco long distance race. Or maybe a race where the "characteristis" <please excuss my spelling> would play a role in the race like maybe a choco triathalon where the choco would have to race over land sea and mountains and have it so diffrent types of chocobos would be effected by the diffrent terrain. so where a "Blue" chocobo may move fast over water it would be slow on mountains. and also id like to see "Chocobo Gear" like maybe diffrent sadels. Finally on the betting it should be playered pool. Where only the money put in by pc's would won or lost. you could distrupite the money based on a probation scale so if 5 ppl bet each a diffrent amount the winner<s> would recieve a share depending on how much money they put into it.so if u had 2 bets on the winner of the race <100k pot for this instance> one bet 25k the other only 10k the person betting 25k would get like 70k while the 10k bet would get about 30k

perhaps SE could have a track built in to different area's. let the choco's race thru the terrain of the different area's but ppl wouldn't be able to get in the way due to the track being off the ground high enough where ppl and the racers don't interfere. Then ppl could watch the choco's racing. i also agree that prizes should be EX due to gil sellers. v.v they always seem to ruin all the fun everywhere else. Now, riders in particular. Mog's could be the riders but it would be ur Mog House mog that rides for u. Yet, you could control where the moogle goes. i understand there's a connectivity issue w/ that but ppl will just have to overcome it however they can. Too many ppl spend money and time to let these great idea's go to waste. So i say let there be something new and fun for everyone to do, ppl don't want to lvl? that's fine, raise ur choco ^^ whatever happens w/ this, lets just have some fun w/ it ok?

-Jousting would be very cool, as stated above.

-It would be very nice if there was a plce for people to sit and watch the race go by. Someplace for your friends to cheer you on when you are racing.

-This is very general but if this is going to be fun, it should be very addictive. Racing should be easy to participate and require alot of skill. I want to be able to have "OOOHHHHHHHHHH" moments just like I do in other racing games, such as mario kart.

On another note:

Didnt you guys come and ask for MPK input and that just ended up in some wild frenzy last time? I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but maybe this time you can offer us a little feedback. I understand that working on this game takes an immense amount of time, but maybe if it's possible at all, just give us players some feedback on why, or why you didnt, choose something to work with.

After the MPK fix, beastmasters were very angry, firstly because of what it did to their job. Secondly, if im not mistaken, there was no answer to the cry for an explanation as to why "this" particular solution was chosen over many of the other very good solutions players suggested.The SE crew knows this game and how it works better than anyone else but sometimes im baffled myself as to the decisions that are made sometimes. Again i mean no disrespect.

First off I'd like to state that I am very excited about the whole Chocobo Movement. I'll follow with my thoughts and what I'd like to see on the racing end of it, since that’s all the dev team has asked for.

I like the idea of ranks and cups. (Perhaps allow for furniture too.) I think there could be a course or stadium Diorama much like the Ballista and Brenner Dioramas. Where players can reserve it and allow LS events or open events. Each nation could have their own ChocoStadium accessible as a zone for viewing and placing bets, but not racing. The racing in each nation could be governed by a NPC much like the Pursuivants (sp*) from Ballista. Perhaps even a Chocobo Racing Counter or Booth.

I however do not like the idea of players not being able to ride the chocobos in their races, I think if we were able to race ourselves and control the birds we'd immerse ourselves into the aspect of choco racing more, making it more enjoyable and eventful. I really hope we are able to control them I just really think that needs to be the end result.

I would like to see a way to either make bets with other people and have SE take those bets for us so we don't have to worry about someone stealing money. Also, an SE run bookey would be fun. Hang out, bet on the chocos and have a nice afternoon.
