Well, for the September 13th update, I'm having the lovely "POL-1160" error message. I dowloaded all 1600+ files, but when it was time to actually install them, I get nothing. Server message does say that service is intermittent, but I just can't seem to slip into a crack at the right time. Oh well, Monday Night Football is on soon, so Square-Enix: Meh.

You *DON'T* need to reinstall FFXI.

Put your PlayOnline-and-TetraMaster CD in your computer *before* starting the PlayOnline Viewer.

Now start the PlayOnline Viewer. Let the updater run. It'll copy the files it needs, and then it'll go away for good. That's all there is to it.
Playonline Version Update error
# Aug 02 2004 at 10:52 PM Rating: Decent
I recently did the latest version update and my antivirus program detected it as a virus and removed it. I then uninstalled Playonline and reinstalled it then I did the version update again and this time it completed. It gave me an error code pol-1155. I shut down my antivirus program and tried again. But still got the same response. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how can I correct it?

I had to remove and re-install Playonline to get the "install" problem to stop.

Got through once, but the game was laggy and messed up. Logged out, and got the black loading screen of death.

Now, I just get the error messages about the server rejecting me.

These new features are not as much fun as some of the ones from the previous updates... =)

I hope they fix a tiny little glitch with the WHM, cast a spell on someone, and if they zone, you don't stop casting it (as cure, protect) the humming noise doesn't stop and you're still in that little state of arms turned up to your side, etc. Really weird and cool if pulled off sometimes =P

i do it all the time.
sit outside mog house chain casting to skill up.
when someone rounds the corner headed to MH, i cast a quick spell like protect, then i run around in circles with the sparkles still on me.
freaks out the newbs when they zone out from the MH, and see me ;p

I'm really looking forward to the European release, since I find it hard to party with Japanese people (Auto-translate is not that good for advanced tactics and quick talk), and Americans are sleeping while I'm online.
But I don't think more languages are good for thes game, If every Europe player speakes his own language this game get's nearly unplayable!

Well, I'm dutch :) My english is pretty good. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 as the best number, my english would reach 8 maybe 9 :) I've even had compliments that my english is better then some american people on FFXI :D
But i can asure you, be aware of French and German people cause most of them frankly just don't speak any english >.<
But don't worry about other dutch people :D at least 95% of the dutch gamers speak great english. (just for the fact that most games in germany/spain/italy/france have to be translated >.< at least we dutch guys get all the games in english so we get to learn the language anyway.)

Does anyone know?

I dont think they will put in the japanese lettering for american/european types.
BTW I think that it is quite ridiculous to update to other languages. Most people who play this game know how to speak english at least enough to understand it. I'm dutch myself and I have played with many european, japanese and american players. Though the autotranslator does not cover everything it helps a great deal. If you log in during 10.00 and 12.00 GMT you wlll find mostly non american and non japanese players online. It is called the deadzone in my LS (which has several European) and makes a great time for hunting NM. Example??? I always hunt spook, crypt ghost, goblin gruel ,deshglesh, barricader, wallbreacher, ashmaker and the other nm orc in FtGlb during these hours. There is at most 1 camper or none and that is most like to be a bot trying to pull my sweet little dragon :)

I have made a LOT of cash this way. The emperor and goldbats are still overcamped no matter the time of the day :(

BTW:

Actually, "no" is "Iie". Although there are plenty of other substitutes. I tend to use "Iya" more. "Iie" may be more polite, but I tend to see more informal and less-restrictive speech between the Japanese players, so I think it works fine.

the auto-translator already translates into kane. If you want to use kane characters, you have to buy a japanese keyboard. It divides the space bar into several keys that allow you to access hirigana, katakana, and kanji just like we use shift to access capital letters. do a google search for "japanese keyboard" and you'll find several site that sell them in the US. Just like american keyboards, they range from the boring $10 keyboards to $90+ ergonomic wireless lowprofile mouse/keyboard combonations.

You do not have to have a Japanese keyboard (one that has Kana next to the letters) to input Japanese characters. On a Mac, you edit your language preferences. On a PC you use "Microsoft IME." Its a free download from microsoft.com. If only you could input them into FFXI like you used to.. ; ;

Talking to a friend of mine who studies Japanese, apparantly she had a chat with POL and it appears that the US game client will not allow you input Japanese characters regardless of your hardware :(

OK so it's not like I can confirm or disprove this, but she's no slouch when it comes to either computers or Japanese language so I have no reason to doubt her word. If on the other hand anyone knows how to input Japanese characters with a US client, do tell us how 'cos I'm sure she'd like to know :)

0k... I think you guys are carrying this Bianary thing tooo far...and for those of yout don't understand Bianary I, who am bored... (he he I love weird grammar)will provide a short tutorial.

Bianary the Enemy Within...sort of....::cough::

ok ... let's get some basics...
My computer ...stuff is a bit fuzzy cause It's been a while...buuuuuuut

there are 8 bits in a byte...
soooo...
before you get a byte...leading to a kilobyte...megabyte...ect...

you start out with Bits...

Coño?? What is a bit?

Well A bit is a unit of memory ...one of the smallest I might add...

Imagin... a wall if you will...
now put some light switches on there...8 of em to be excact.

Light switches... YES...light switches... well unless you are using a dimmer or some other non-conventional light switch you will find...

that it has to positions .... ON and OFF

now let's say you translate that into math...

the absense of light is 0 or 0ff (feels clever for using a zero as letter)

and the presence of light is marked by a 1... the most simplistic state ment of existance

Well now we get to the complicated thing...
I've put to gether an easy to remember formula ...to help you understand how binary code really works... E=MC(2)...What you don't believe it's my formula... just ask Ein...well never mind...

Ok so here is how it REALLY works.. binary reads from right to left. So you start at the right and end at the left.

now this is important due to the following...I will write 8 numbers down... below... and seperate by a space

128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1

is this was Binary it would be

1111 1111

each space represents a exponential form of 2..I.E. 2 to the power of

7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0

0 is in Binary
0000 0000
and 1 is
0000 0001
and two is
0000 0010

so a 1 means you turn that spot on ... so a 1 in the 4rth spot from the right means 16...

and a 1 in the 1st 3rd and 4rth sport from the right means 25.. get it?

no,
good...
:P

P.S.

I don't think he meant that people who knew Binary were worse off than those who didn't...nor am I assuming peope don't ...

so have a cracker...

Wow :D awesome, I had a lesson about this in school and i didn't understand it at all, now reading your post it's perfectly clear to me :D

Wow... that was awesome... I always wondered how binary code worked

when do we get chapter 2? I can only do 255.

How do we go higher?

so do do 127 it would be

0111 1111
RE: WOOOOOAAAA Thank you
# Aug 02 2004 at 2:54 PM Rating: Decent
To go higher just add an extra series of 4 digits. The more you add the higher you go. Usally you'll always stick with 4 digit groupings as well, even if the first digit is a 0 or a bunch of them.

For example 1,000,000 = 1111 0100 0010 0100 0000

For fun in Windows start up your Calculator, then click on view then chose Scientific afterwards type in a decimal number, anything really, then on the left chose Binary. It'll convert it for you.

Binary isn't all that complex once you understand how it works. Hexadecimal, now there's a complicated one.
127 = 7F = 0111 1111

Hex isn't bad at all, you just take the grouping of 4 (values of 0-15, or 0000 -> 1111) and translate it into a character.

value 0-9 = 0-9
10=A
11=B
12=C
13=D
14=E
15=F

i.e. (from above)
For example 1,000,000 = 1111 0100 0010 0100 0000

or 1,000,000 = F4240
