Contents [hide]

General Information

  • Strong Intimidation effect. This effect is more potent when Gration is casting a spell or performing a TP move.

  • Immune to Stun. Susceptible to Gravity and Bind (Resistance increases through multiple uses).

  • If spawned with a Picaroon's Shield, Gration's delay between casting spells is reduced.

  • Guaranteed drops: Tatami Shield (only if spawned with a Picaroon's Shield)

Gration Special Attacks

  • Grand Slam: Strong AoE physical damage.

  • Power Attack: Strong single target physical damage.

    • If spawned with a Hickory Shield, Gration will always perform two in a row. If spawned with a Picaroon's Shield, Gration will always perform three in a row.

  • Thundaga III: Strong AoE Thunder based magic damage. (Circle of effect originates from the spell target.)

  • Thunder IV: Strong single target Thunder based magic damage.

  • Burst: Strong single target Thunder based magic damage.

  • Enthunder: All melee attacks performed by Gration deal additional Thunder based magic damage for the duration of the effect. (Effect can be dispelled).

  • Haste: Attack speed increase and magic recast timer reduction for the duration of the effect. (Effect can be dispelled).

  • Shock Spikes: Melee attacks performed on Gration will inflict Thunder based magic damage with additional Stun effects on the attacker for the duration of the effect. (Effect can be dispelled).

Historical Information

In Greek Mythology, Gration was one of the Gigantes (the race of giants born from the mother goddess Gaia fertilized by the blood of the castrated god Uranus) that waged war against the gods of Olympus in an attempt to overthrow them. Gration was slain by the huntress goddess Artemis in a flurry of arrows.

trio'd him twice today, both with Hickory shields and both times dropped Tatami :D first time trio was a RDM friend who went to try and solo and wanted us to watch and jump in if needed, he pops it and it 1 shots him lol so we jump in and after 1.5 hrs he dies and drops shield, I didnt like the RDM tactic as we died many times and the other 2 ppl died without RR up so I was left to solo while they came back (Summoner btw) kited it round for 10 mins or so while he came back to camp and took off 4% health (would have been RDM DoT's left on it tho adding to Carbs pathetic damage) after this we beat it and I have no doubt a 75SMN can solo, 2nd time around myself and my friend who is also a SMN went up to duo it and took it to 69% without a death, agro dropped and by the time Carb got back on it it was back to 99%, so for times sake as this was over an hr so far to take him that far nevermind start again so we called out a friend who is also a SMN (see a pattern? I like SMN's :p) and instead of kiting it round with our carbs like we had been doing we worked using 1 SMN healing up MP, 1 SMN with Fenrir on the mob and 1 SMN with Carb on the mob (switching to Fen if they had plenty of MP) then rotate them, saved a lot of time and made it a very easy fight, so summary for SMN v Gration, 1v1 do-able but time and effort involved with good chance of losing claim is just not worth it, 2v1 good way to do it, still lengthy but worth the time if you dont drop claim, and 3v1 is overkill, cant kill it with 3 SMN v it...lvl a different job lol, most fun day Ive ever had in FFXI I think :D

Soloed this today as RDM/NIN. It is a pretty simple fight, just keep your distance from him. It being my first time soloing him, I made the mistake of going too far many times, so I had to hurry to reclaim him. So, stay far enough that u can out run him, but close enough that he doesn't go unclaimed.

After doing research, I tried to save most of my Grav's till he ran out of MP. The only thing is that i used Bind a lot during the begining, and at about 75% i got a resist, and I have max Enf. except for AF2 head. SO, I don't know if he builds Bind resist also, so try to save it till you really need it.

A RDM that knows what they are doing can most likely solo this. Just dot/nuke when he cast AM/tier IV, and run when he casts -aga III.

Trio'd this today. RDM/NIN, RDM/NIN, NIN/WAR.

We dragged him back toward the Tavnazian Safehold zone in order to avoid aggro and fought him in the open area as you come out of the town.

Fight took 2.5 hours and was a grueling marathon of Thundaga III... on the upshot, if you live long enough he runs out of magic and starts spamming TP moves.

The last few percent of health was tight as he tends to get very mean toward the end... but when he finally dropped we all cheered a bit.

Picaroon's Shield. Congrats Winter on his new Tatami Shield.

Duo'd This 2X RDM/NIN Today with a friend, However I Soloed It Before

Quite Easy Fight, i Fought without Crimson Legs

It was easy cause it kept casting spells, intimidate pissed me off a lot though, musta had a 1/2 proc rate on me when casting

When it ran outta mp (Yes it ran outta mp which kinda gives you a thought of length of time it took) it is much harder, since it doesnt stop, this is where enfeebling and Magic accuracy Gear Earns Its Price,

Last 10% was very interesting Both When i Soloed And Duo'd WIth mY Friend, Literally Spammed Tp Moves, Gravity started staying on less and less time, so i hadda cast it only to get distance on the mob,

some LS turned up so i hadda be real careful it didnt go unclaimed, because well... im sure they woulda had no problem stealing it from me, which is kinda sad they cant just respect the fact i did it, and not give me additional things to worry about :=/

No Drop, Which is disheartening After a 2 Hour+ Fight /sigh

But Yea, Easy Solo, Any Competent RDM can do this i think, Just Run For YOur Life When It Thundaga III's, and Nuke When It uses Tier V / Anceint Magic

Crimson Legs Woulda Made This Fight So Much Easier, So If You Gonna Solo It, I Highly Suggest Getting Them If You Havent Mastered Gravity Kiting without Them

Good Luck :D

Did this last night. 2x RDM/NIN, BRD/WHM and me BLM/NIN. Could have done it (slower) with just RDM and BLM.

DoT him with Bio II and Poison II (others if you wish) then just kite. When he stops to cast big magic (except -ga III), everyone just stops and lands whatever blizzard spell you can. Blizzard coz of +ele magic skill. RDM's had crimson legs on for faster movement and BRD had marzuka for me.

As per the subject, patience is the key. It takes about an hour but can be done easily if you keep your heads about you and its fun to boot.

One last thing, drag him to the next big area west where there are lots of trees. He doesn't like running through them and will consequently run around them.

No drop though ;; NQ shield FTL.

Here's how you beat him (especially after they introduce the BLM patch):

Gation uses the following moves:
Thundaga III
Thunder IV
Haste
Enthunder
Shock Spikes
Grand Slam
AoE stomp move that does about 500 dmg to people in range (seems to be tp based)
He also seems to have fastcast

Mages: make sure you have stoneskin and blink up at all times and stay out of his relatively small AoE stomp area.

If you can get a BRD to stick Elegy (which is extremely easy) and a RDM to stick slow his Thundaga III and Thunder IV recast times are so long that most of the time he stops to cast he will have to cast Enthunder or Shockspikes on himself.

I did not see a RDM stick Gravity on him and Diabolos Gravity only stuck for maybe 30-60 secs.

Melee: every melee should be using spirits within. Wear HP gear and bring NIN sub for shadows. Build TP on outside mobs (do not give Gration any TP).

Tanks: this is your text book mob to be kited. Run out of range of his nukes and you wont die. Do not run back and forth in a line as someone else suggested (if he gets a Thundaga III off you'll wipe your whole alliance). The field is big enough that where your turns wont be too sharp and thus you will be able to run in a circle w/o really turning too sharply. He has fastcast so if you stop just for a second to provoke him while he's casting Thundaga III he will land it on you.

Overall tips: You don't need your healers in the main alliance. The majority of the time in this fight you're either alive or dead, there is no in between. Instead have your WHMs run around the field raising those who die. If they can top off the melee right before they use Spirits Within great.

Everyone except WHMs, BLMs, and SMNs should be using a sword and getting tp for Spirits Within. (I even fought him as BRD/SAM one fight).

The first volley of Spirits Withins after the pop will drop him down to about 80-85% right away. If you have a lot of people rotate the melee for ones with TP. RDMs, BRDs, PLDs, NINs can all be used to DD in this fight so don't just have your back up tanks standing on the sidelines watching have them getting TP and using it too.

You may want to set up a "no hate" resting area for people to sit when they're weakened so that everyone with hate knows to stay away from them. This way they wont get hit with a random AoE while weakened. (Some of our tanks accidently MPKd some of our weakened people because of not having an area like this)

He can probably be killed with 6 people who know what they're doing but the fight will take a long time. I had anywhere from 30 people for some pops to as few as 16 for others. With the group of 16 we had him down in 15-20 mins with only minor BLM deaths.

If you have a group that's never done this before the first fight may be a little shaky but he's really not that hard just do not melee him and you'll be fine.

My LS's drop rate, not invluding HQs, is 5/8 or 62.5%. The HQ Gration only has more HP (and he may hit a little harder not sure) but we killed the HQ with less deaths that a previous NQ.

Just a side note to passers by: If you're walking by you're going to want to stay away, he uses AoE. We killed quite a few people who were just running by because they were standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Great post, rate up. We fortunately had a better drop rate at 5/6, but this guide is very nice. A few things to point on though.

He's unstunnable, which is why hehas to be kited 24/7.

If you rest behind the windmill where you pop the NM after being weakened, no mobs will aggro you and it is very easy for your tanks to avoid that area while still going in a circle.

All Blms will want to use Blizzaga3/Blizzard IV and depending on your luck / merrits, I would recomend +E.Skill, even while using E. Seal.

This is the most important thing: make sure no one ever pulls hate off of the tanks, I pulled hate off of our kiters twice and I was fortunately killed in one hit by power attack both times, but if he casts a thundaga on someone other than the tanks, he will get it off and there will be much death.

Just a quick post, a new method on tanking/killing Gration for those looking to kill it. What my ls tried today was tanking Gration straight up. After doing serveral kills kiting, we wanted to have a little fun with it. So once it popped, we killed it by having me tank it straight up despite his thunder 4s, grand slam, and thundaga 3s. Most of the time my HP never went under 1,000, even without smn buffs. So i tanked while blms surrounded gration and melee/sc partners ran in, did an sc and took off away from AoE. This surprisingly worked out extremely well for our ls and made the kill a lot faster. If you think this method is for you, give it a shot ^^. Worked well for us and it was very easy. If not you can always follow my previous strat post ^^, either one can get you the win and hopefully the shield. Take care and see you in the game for those kujatans.

Just killed this guy with 6 bst, ranging from lvl 73-75.

Strategy was as follows:

We used CourierCarries to start, let timers cool down, then popped the NM. Once they were all dead, we called 2nd Carries and all ran to the Rafeloux River (I-6) to look for pets. In between Carries, we used natural crabs, pugils and mantraps from the river area, and although they didn't last very long, there was enough of them to throw at him while Call Beast timers cooled down.

At first we used Carries as soon as we could call them, but quickly noticed that Gration would make short work of the one or two that were fighting him. This was because Call Beast timers were uneven and not everyone could summon her at the same time. Solution to this was to keep throwing natural pets until everyone could call her, then call out when we were ready, and make 4 or more carries fight at the same time. This made them last a little longer, and upped the damage to Gration by quite a bit. Pugs and Crabs did manage to hit some times, but it seems mantraps did the best damage. However, we weren't picky about pets, and we charmed whatever was in front of us when we needed to. At one point we ran out of Carries, and had to use natural pets strictly while one of the bst warped to jeuno and bought 4 more stacks. So make sure you have at least two stacks of FishOil Broth and two stacks of Pet Food Zeta each, not because you will need them all, but as they say "one ounce of prevention is worth one pound of cure." ^ ^

As with most bst battles, basic strategy is to outlive the NM, with the only real worry being Call Beast timers. In this case, it wasn't an issue because of natural "in between" pets. As always, we used pet food zeta whenever possible, and in the end used about a stack and a half of carries each, maybe less.

Dont be fooled, if you're attempting this all bst, be prepared for a marathon battle. We fought Gration for almost two hours, but thats quite an accomplishment considering it was only 6 BST.

We all subbed whm, and fight was pretty straight forward as far as bst groups go. At no point were we in any real danger, and we didn't even have to resort to charm binding for Call Beast cooldown. Since this was our first attempt at this NM, we used an NQ shield to pop him, and unfortunately, after all our hard work, he ended up dropping NOTHING. Thats right NOTHING!

Overall, it was a fun fight, showcasing once again, the true power of bst.

LotB of Shiva strikes again!

Thanks to Xenorex, Morodin, Quix and Justik for participating in this fight, especially Bradford who risked his NQ shield to attempt this bad boy.

Strategy for Gration
# Aug 28 2005 at 2:37 AM Rating: Excellent
Introduction
Well here's my take on Gration, i hope this helps out a lot of people wanting to fight this NM. A brief introduction, first of all Gration is fought in H-8 of Misareaux Coast. The position is really easy to get to and there is no chance of links or other things to worried about unlike other forced spawned NMs such as Geush Urvan. Really hard NM for people unless your prepared and this is my strategy for Gration.

Spawn Items
You spawn Gration by trading a Hickory Shield (NQ version that drops the Tatami Shield 30% of the time) or a Picaroon's Shield (HQ version that drops the tatami shield 100% of the time). The shields are made by a high lvl woodworker and the materials are two Hickory Lumbers which can be attained from either buying them from another players bazaar (Lumber sells for 50-150k on the Kujata Server, really common to see someone having the lumber in their bazaar), or from farming them in Xarcabard from any Gigas in the area. *Note* Getting the drop from the gigas may take hours just for one drop, so if you do not have the time to farm, might be easier to buy.

tanks to use
This one i would suggest everyone have blink, so Ninjas would work real well, specially if they have their af feet with 25% movement. For one Gration swings a little hard but not incredibly hard to one hit kill anyone, so definately have NINs kite. As just stated, the tanks must kite throughout the fight This is an open area so run in a straight line back and forth not in a circular motion. NINs might lose hate toe blms or to other DDs that hit Gration for high damage, so pack enmity gear as much as possible. PLDs are also capable of kiting Gration but are subject to dying a lot faster. A food that a tank might want to use this fight is Carbonara because Gration has the ability to one spell kill a kiter under unlucky circumstances. So to wrap up, kite in straight lines back in forth, nins tanks prefered, Carbonara food and enmity gear.

Party set up
Party 1- BLM,BLM, BLM, RDM, BRD, WHM
Party 2- RNG, SAM, SAM, WHM, RDM, DRG
Party 3- WHM, SMN, PLD, NIN, WHM,WAR

Gration's Moves
Gration melees and all but that isnt what your looking to avoid. His moves include normal meleeing, Thundaga 4, an AoE attack that does decent damage to the alliance, and water 4. Thundaga 4 is what your looking to avoid, as stated above, kite in a straight line to get far enough to get out of its range. *Note* If in case you are getting Thundagaed and you cant make it out of its range in time, then run to an area --AWAY-- from the rest of the group so you get the thundaga by yourself and not damage the rest of the party. The AoE move stuns Gration, he pauses for a few seconds, thats a good time to recover anyone that has been hit with the AoE or if DDs want to unload TP moves on him. Lastly, Gration intimadates everyone 90% of the time. You will be intimidated so much from this NM it might drive you crazy, but other than that he's harmless with the exception of his Thundaga and AoE stomp. So expect to be intimidated a lot, this shouldnt effect the outcome of the fight though.

How to Damage Gration
In this case your relying on blm damage and on DDs gaining TP on surrounding monsters and unload on Gration. Advice to blms, you might have to kite yourself so have stoneskin and blink on. Gration can be bound but for a short time, Gration can also be gravitied but may resist from time to time. A good way to kill Gration fast is to have the DDs pairing up with an SC partner and doing scs for blms to burst. Repeat this process as much as possible til he dies, nothing to it.

Post Fight
After the fight is over, you dont have to wait for the ??? to spawn again, you can do as many fights in a row. The shield serves a great purpose for BST and Tanks (PLD). From my point of view (being a PLD75), this shield serves great to kill HNMs and if you prepare your gear around the shield, it really works as a tanking tool. Some practical Strategies for the shield which i have used is having dual Demon Earrings, Tatami Shield, Hrotti, and 3 pieces of Koenig Armor for +30 ChR in addition to other CHR pieces like Kaiser Belt (CHR+4). This really tends to intimadate Wyvern type mobs and serves almost as though if the monster had paralyze throughout the whole fight. To wrap up, this is an easy and fun fight, and the shield it drops is great. For reference, i used 3 HQ shields so we went 3/3. I hope this helps people defeat this NM. I'm really sorry for the super long post but i wanted to cover everything as to leave no questions. If in case there are some questions anyone would like to ask, send me a tell on the Kujata server or reply ^^. Always happy to help. If this post helps dont be shy to rate it up ^^. Thanks everyone , have fun for those fighting Gration.

Another note.

Grand Slam can do a very wide ranger of damage, anywhere from 100ish all the way up to 1000+ depending on your buffs, def etc.
I got 1 shotted a couple times while building TP for Spirits Within.

You're a bit misinformed here. :p For one, PLD can kite this. Our PLD with crimson cuisess didn't die once. Also, you do NOT kite back and forth or you're bound to get hit. -.-; And Carbonara isn't for tanks only - in fact, all melees using Spirit's Within should be using this. As for PT set up, you don't need that many people. We only had 1 BLM, all other DDs were using Spirit's or Chi Blast. As for his moves, you're wrong in a lot of spots. For one, he casts Thundaga 3 (not 4), Thunder 4 (not water), Burst, Shock Spikes, Haste, and Enthunder. The AOE you spoke of is called Grand Slam, which is a kinda bad AOE. It did about 100-200 to me with a full Stoneskin. I fully agree when you say BLMs should stay buffed, our Taru BLM was always getting one-shotted by his TP without SS. Also, the ??? is on a 15 minute re-pop. >.> not Instant. I agree that this shield is very nice, and looks cool too. :p

This is a bit of an old post but I have to add my two gil in here as well.

PLD can do as well or better then NIN kiting this just for the fact that we can put the hate line a lot higher (enfeebles are tough to cast on the fly as he will intimidate 90% of the attempts to cast them, while most of PLD hate tools are self target and therefore cannot be intimidated). Crimson legs help a lot, but I kited him fine 2x before ever getting a pair. Kite in circles, but run in a straight line when you see him casting -aga, and you should have no problems at all.

Grand slam seems to have about the same range as provoke, so be prepared to be hit when you stop to voke for hate. Usually its not too much longer before he stops to cast, you can get ahead and self cure to patch up the grand slam dammage.

Lol my ls just killed it, we had around 15 people, one blm, one rdm(one more showed up later), one brd, few whm, 2 wars(i and other guy kited him back and forth, not in circular, just north, then west, works way better then cirluar^^) i believe 2 rng, and and 2 sam/rng, + a drk(cant' remember the rest)

main damage i think was spirits within, while wars were kiting, other melees killed mobs, mostly other gigas since they link, and then otehr mobs for 300 tp, and then, sheezam^^

I'm not going to talk about the wipe we had when we got him down to 90%... um.. ya, gotta say that reraise gorgets saved the day, since we kited him till everyone got back up, i used half, since i didn't use mine when it first killed me and rng used it up completely...

Tip to people who going to kite it: IF you see that it's casting thundaraga 4 on you, DO NOT run towards other people, either try to go out of range if u're far, or just die for benefit of otheres.

Oh yeah, we used NQ version and.... didn't get anything>.>

This fight is amazingly fun.

It's almost like fighting a mini Kirin in some ways.

Heres what you should know:

He is a gigas, silence does not stick, very resistant to stun, slightly resistant to bind and not resistant at all to gravity (15 casts 1 resist).

Your best chances are by kiting him... Rangers rangers rangers.

Kiting him is easier then you would imagine, because he stops so much to cast his spells.

Kite him in a circular pattern around his pop area, up and down the ledge.

Just have your rangers keep hate by spamming arrows, make sure rdm is saving gravity for a critical moment.

He casts ThunderIV, ThundagaIII, Burst, Enthunder, Haste and i believe shock spikes also?

If you get near him, chances is he will use his AoE, which takes 1-3 shadows and hurts pretty bad, but it isnt as horrible as you think.

He also has an annoying "Intimidated" effect, which another poster mentioned is only really annoying for rdm and blm, as they do 90% of the offensive casting. (Ranged attacks cant be intimidated)

Killed first time as RNG+RDM+PLD for 50% of his health then RNG RNG SAM PLD BST RDM for the other 50%. He could probably be trio'd as rng rng rdm with reraise gorgets.

The item chain:

Gigas in xarcabard drop hickory lumber

Hickory lumber is synthed into a Hickory shield or HQ shield

Hickory shield/HQ is traded to ??? point to spawn Gration

Gration drops tatami shield.

I Believe the chances of the tatami shield dropping does depend on if you trade HQ or NQ.

But even with a NQ trade, his drop rate is amazingly high - 4/4 with NQ shields.

So i can't really prove anything yet.

Hope this provided some useful information, and have fun!

I saw today a party of uber-jp players taking it down; 5 rng/nin and 1 blm/whm, all with the best equipment at lv75 u can imagine. Even so, it took long time to kill it, and one of the tarus almost dies with that freakin jump.
So if u wanna fight it, dont go with only 6 people unless u really know what u are doing. And prepare ur raises.

Just killed him about 15 minutes ago. One word of advise: If you have low max HP, stay far away -.-
He likes to Jump A LOT, which takes anywhere from 1-3 shadows off and can also 1 shot taru mages (it even 1 shotted our hume mages, so it's not just taru)... stay back. He does like to cast Thundaga III a lot, which may not seem too harmful, but to me (75 Mithra RNG) it did 1008 damage to me, taking me out :p kite kite kite it like no tomorrow :/ Also, someone noted he hits "HARD" somewhere, it wasn't too hard... I got hit around 250 damage on normal attacks (please notice I'm a Ranger with paper thin armor, so that it not all that much compared to what it could be...) Good Luck! fight was a lot of fun, even with all the deaths :P

He was sort of easier than I had been imagining... You do *not* need NIN or /NIN to tank him, we marathoned him with 2 PLD/WAR easily enough. Probably 90% of the death we had from this guy was careless mages getting too close and getting Grand Slam'd. It hits *hard* and Taru mage can be killed one shot even through Stoneskin. You can generally outrun his magic, etc, etc. The intimidation factor is only really annoying for RDM and BLM since ranged attack and WS won't be intimidated. All in all a lot of fun, GJ on these new encounters S-E^^.

We went 3/5 on drops, all NQ trades (._.) which isn't too bad I suppose.

I saw a JP PT kiting this guy around the other day. He has high level Ga- spells and hits very hard. He also has the ability to intimidate players.

He drops a shield that gives 5 STR, 3 evasion, and enhances killer effects.

I am told this NM is a forced pop, but I do not know what items you need to spawn him. If anyone has any ideas, I would be interested to know. =)
