I've been going crazy trying to find these wolves the old fashioned way without buying the collar at the AH.
I'm on the Asura server and every time I wait for them to spawn between 24:00 - 4:00, they don't show up!
I've even tried killing other mobs in case they share a pop timer, but no luck,
I've checked all over the map too, and I can't seem to spot them anywhere?
Has this quest changed or am I going crazy???

SummaryGudav wants you to investigate the whereabouts of his crew's foreman. WalkthroughSpeak with Gudav at (H-5) in Port Bastok. He is standing on a platform in the construction area. He tells you that the boss of the construction has been missing. Apparently, the boss disappeared with a dog. Get a dog collar from the Black Wolf in North Gustaberg which spawns at night time, and bring it back to Gudav. For your reward, you will receive the map of the Gusgen Mines.

I did this after i found a dog collar for 200gil in someone's bazaar i figured it was worth the gil to be able to get some fame and a map

i just paid 4,500 in bastok AH for the collar, Next time i wont be so impatient.I probably could of take'n one without a sweat.
This is the easiest quest ever if you buy the collar in advance, just 15k on Fairy (5k in Jeuno, but the price is jacked up in Bastok because of this quest). However if you wish to save yourself that measly 15k and farm it good luck. I just bought it because I can make it back 100 fold by mining in in Gusgen....

I had this quest active for like 3 months, i probably killed about 20 (mabye more) black wolves and nothing!
i finall just got pissed off and bought the collor from the AH. i have a better drop rate for Leaping Boots then i have for this stupid dog collor >.<

I had this quest in my Quests list for a while now but everytime I pass through North Gustaberg it's day time -_-"
today and AFTER I finished Bastok Mission 3-2 which requires you to go kill Blind Moby at Gusgen Mines (No map) I return and it's night time! and he's over there! lol, so I killed him and got the map ^^

Just done this Quest as a LVL 52 WHM and I killed the wolf quite easily ;)

Since most people travel frequently in the N. Gustaberg zone between S. Gust and Konty Highlands, I recommend the next time you travel to Valkurm to level up some job, make it at night. The black wolf is usually right off to the right side of the path (if heading N) and is easy kill even for lvls10-12. He has dropped the collar every time i've killed him 9/9. Save yourself the gil. ^^
You can also find him on Zegham Hill. He kept attacking me by surprise, but only at night. As a Warrior 10 at that point, he dropped it on the third or fourth fight.

Not really, I wear one proudly as it was a gift from my fiancee. I only wear it when in town but it sure can make people's heads turn *giggles*
He means mithra are CAT people, why would they wear a DOG collar.

I've gotten two of these...one dropped on a black wolf on zegham hill, (sp) in n. gustaberg, the other dropped on a black wolf in n. gustaberg right outside of the outpost. The first one i sold because i didnt know i needed...bought one for the quest...and now i found another one after i already bought one...ehhh...
I just recently got my 3rd or 4th dog collar. The first 2 or 3 I sold or wore (a Mithra THF wearing a dog collar, isn't that a contradiction of sorts?). I had no idea that this was for a quest until someone mentioned that it's needed for one but they had no idea which one or what the reward was.
This comes in handy cause I'm going to Gusgen tonight to help someone with their Subjob Skull! XD

I kill these wolves all the time because the dog collar currently goes for 2k in Jeuno (Cerberus). I never knew it was for a quest. I been needing the Gusgen map forever. I usually get the drop on my first try... But I'm a 30 Ranger, with Thief sub (15, got Treasure Hunter). Anywho, glad to have found this out. ^ ^

This has to be by far the rarest item I have ever not seen. I am a lvl 12 warrior and so far I have faught about 25 wolves and I am yet to get this item to drop. Any tips???

I got the collar a while ago while lvling my THF. I didn't even know it was a quest until now, but I like the collar and have been wearing it since I got it. Would I be able to carry two of them and use one for this quests?
If you have one in your inventory, you can't get another one, but what you can do is temporarily put the collar you want to keep in "AH storage." That is, put it in the auction house on sale for 999,999,999 gil. Your AH listing doesn't count as your inventory, so you will be able to get a second one without losing the first. :)

An easier way is to send the item to your MH at the AH so its in your delivery box, then you can hold another one.

I've gotten the dog coller 1/3 of the time and a dark crystal in all but 1 of more than 100 dark wolf kills. So don't be discouraged about not getting it, it will happen. The best place to kill them is Vomp Hill in S. Gustaberg.

The Collar also drops in Gusgen Mines... on the Bandersnatch there... a good choice for adventurers is to get one while you have a PT in Gusgen getting Skulls for Sub Job's.

this guy is actually in H-5 / I-5. He's not even close to G-5. You can even talk to him standing in I-5.
OK, I've got em about 8 times. I kill him each time and have yet to get the drop. He is usually on the south side of the bridge in NG. Why am I not getting the drop? Do I need to speek to Gustav first or does fame have something to do with it. I'm a 12 WAR and so he goes down easily. Is my level too high?
Well, I went home after work and started the game. As luck would have it, I happened to be at the spawning point at about 10:00pm gametime. So, thinking 9th time was the charm I sat down in the soft grass and waited. As usual the Black Wolf appeared and for the 9th time, I dropped him like a used tissue. But this time, he dropped the collar!!! Woo-Hoo!!! :doing the happy little gnome dance: Now I can go to sleep! Now I can go to work! This guy has kept me from everything except using the bathroom. :)

Hehe...so I'm about 10/10 for a drop from this bad boy. Easy farming for me. I've even jumped off a choc just to kill the wolf, and there was a drop. So maybe a new update made this drop happen more often, or maybe I'm just really lucky. Who knows. I'm also the one who has the Kaz quest post about getting the keys in 6 total kills. :-) Hate me now. Goes for 2.5K at Bastok AH on Diablos server. Think I'll just farm this one instead of NM's.
