I, like many others, was finding drops on the Coffer Key less than satisfying. I started soloing Helm Beetles in QSC on the E. Altepa side. Having no luck there whatsoever, I moved to the West Altepa QSC entrance at J-9. I encountered similar problems going at it solo – the key just wouldn't drop.
So, I whipped out my NPC fellow, and I got the key on the first kill. I decided I'd kill off the remaining two Beetles, and each one also dropped the key. Granted, I already had one and couldn't keep those, but maybe you guys are onto something with the party-increased-drop-rate line of thought. Or perhaps it was simply the law of averages or good fortune that finally decided to catch up.
Nevertheless, I've been back twice for coffers, and each time my drop rate was substantially higher with the NPC fellow out.

DescriptionNote: To begin this quest, you must have completed A Craftsman's Work - DRG AF1 and started Chasing Quotas. You must also have started the quest Borghertz's Dragon Hands. Head to Quicksand Caves and find a Quicksand coffer key. Im one of the many having trouble getting this.
doing it solo and did it with another member from my LS. Dunno if having two counts has having a pt like 6 people, since that seems to work from reading this.

This information is incorrect. All I have done was the lv 50 quest for the first piece and got this coffer right after. I haven't talked to the NPC for the gloves yet.

I was lucky enough to have the coffer at the first place I checked, at E-10, I almost missed it if I didn't look over the edge, it's on a little ledge. Got my new boots and ready to train to use them :D.

K someone help me out before I flip out. I got Peregrine, and I got the Drachen Brais, but no Guslam Cutscene when I talk to him. Do I need to get the other piece, I think it['s the boots from QS caves first? Anyone else run into this problem? I've beenr eady for AF for along time..lvl 61 DRG now and still just AF pants lol, help me out. PLEASE!
Hey guys, I'm a 52 DRG now and got 3 of my AF equips (Lance, Legs and hands) and i was wondering, will i be able to find a coffer from the J-9 entrance to Quicksand? if not then what entrances will i find them at?

why is the prerequisate for this lvl 54 armor quest the quest for the level 56 armor? Do I really have to get the gloves before I can even get the feet?

Because inorder to recieve AF from the treasure coffers you must talk to guslam. He will tell you that you can find rare armors in old dungeons, like the ones where you can find your af hands.

no you just need to start the glove quest not actually get them i started glove quest andd was waiting for my bst friend to help me with it so i hopped over to quicksand caves i already had key from exp party coffer was in the last place i checked used 6 oils and in the end got aggro from ant right when i opened the chest used a warp cudgel and turned up in port jeuno dead ....... passing whm gave me a R 3 .... i got lucky there = 3

No you can't.
You must be lvl 40 at least to get the AF1 Polearm Quest, and you must have completed this quest in order to open up your other artifact quests.
Also, you must be lvl 50 to get your AF2 quest from the guy in Port San'Doria

and believe me i m not one of the poeple that just walked in and found it right away.
this coffer took me 5 days to get, throughout which it was stolen form me, i was killed and almost deleveled.
So far, this is by far the most unpleasant quest i have done, maybe as bad as LB1.
Some advice: sub a mage with sneak, otherwise Oils are gonna run u a fortune.
good luck to all future hunters :D

Once I had a map of the spawn points, finding the coffer chest was extremely easy. Took me a single silent oil to check the spawn points shown in the first map on the link below.

Still on my first silent oil, I found the coffer at (C-9) on the 2nd map, being guarded closely by an Antican Princeps. He eventually walked off (or so I thought) and I went in, got my Drachen Greaves, then instantly got hit by a Flash. Turns out while I was opening the coffer he had turned back around and was about 3 feet behind me. I didn't survive, but I got my greaves anyhow.

did this yesterday with only the AF1 quest done and the "Chasing Quotas" quest started but not finished. Pretty easy with a friend who helped me casting sneak :) I finished also teleport-altep quest in the quicksand caves XD

posting says min level is 1.. does anyone know if the AF piece is acquirable at such a low level or does the Weapon AF have to be done as it is with most jobs?

So got a stack each of oil and powders and a tele to altep. Zoned through entrance 4 on the great maps on http://www.ffxi.blueelephantbrigade.com/maps/Eastern%20Altepa%20Desert.htm
and found the chest str8 away, problems started happening when i tried to trade the coffer key to the chest and nothing happened. Realised i was being DC'd, took 4 hours for my dam broadband connection to be restored and when i got back on NO CHEST. was completely lost as well so sneaked and oiled up and decided to try and get the hell out of there and log for the night. Fell down a quicksand hole turned right and into a dead end and BAM there is the chest and my AF3. This game really does play with your emotions sometimes doesnt it. Can see this being a right pig of an AF to get for DRG's though without a little luck

I had a coffer key from a LONG time ago here. I think I tossed it or used it. So now here I am in Quicksand Caves over the span of three days (5-6 hours, even had TH for a few hours) and no luck at all. I came as DRG50 and a friend and also SMN72 on my own. This key just won't drop!
(Btw, monsters don't aggro by scent, they track by scent. Which means if you aggro a monster you can run away from where you initally aggroed, deodorize, and run away. If you're far enough the mob will de-aggro and de-spawn.)

I just love how it tells me wich entrance to quicksand caves it is...
This piece was a piece of cake. Got a key while exping here from 48-49. waited til i was 50 and grabbed the tele-altep quest at the same time. Found the chest right by the entrance due east of the telepoint at the first spawn i checked then zoned about five anticans. A simple task only needed one oil and i had my boots. If only the other chests had been so easy to find...

the only AF quest you need finished to open the coffer and get the greaves is AF1 for the Peregrine. I just completed this without starting 'Borghertz' Dragon Hands'. I do have 'Chasig Quotas' started, but not completed.

COffer keys's drop rate for this place is like 33%. I leveled here from 50-52 and it dropped off beetles like half the time almost. TIme to sub WHM and find that coffer!
Which AF quests do you have to have done before the coffer will give the greaves? I have AF1 and 2 done, and Borghertz's Dragon Hands and AF3 started... Is that enough?

Raise 2 falls from bcnm runs, and high level mobs. Your 1st coffer pop from this zone will the be map; unless you have your Artifact quest enabled.
