General Information

    • There are two that spawn in this area, but the one that alternates pop locations (can spawn inside or outside of the room) is the placeholder mob. Despite its placeholder's spawn pattern, Charybdis will always spawn inside the room.

  • Respawn time is approximately 8 hours after its last Time of Death.

  • Immune to Sleep. Susceptible to Stun, Slow, Bind, Blind, and Paralysis. Susceptible to Gravity, but builds a resistance over time.

  • Is capable of attacking multiple times per attack round.

Charybdis Special Attacks

  • Hard Membrane: Self target Evasion boost. (Effect can be dispelled).

  • Tentacle: Single target physical attack.

  • Ink Jet: Frontal cone AoE magic damage with additional Blind effect.

  • Cross Attack: Single target two-hit physical attack.

  • Whirlwind: AoE Wind based magic damage with an additional Vitality down effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Maelstrom: AoE Water based magic damage with additional an Strength down effect (Circle of effect originates from mob).

  • Regeneration: Self target Regen effect. (Effect can be dispelled).

Historical Information

In Greek mythology, Charybdis is a sea monster that is said to take the form of a gargantuan mouth that sucks in and spits out enormous volumes of water three times a day. The daughter of the ocean god Poseidon and earth goddess Gaia, she was originally a naiad until she stole the cattle of Geryon from Heracles, which angered Zeus and caused him to transform her into a monster.

She resided along the side of a strait of water within an arrow shot's distance of Scylla, another sea monster that took on the form of a creature with six vicious dog-heads atop incredibly long necks. Ships passing through the strait would have to decide between passing close to Scylla's domain to avoid Charybdis, or vice versa. They would almost always choose the Scylla side, as while passing by Scylla would ensure that some of the crew would be killed, passing near Charybdis could result in the destruction of the entire ship.

It is believed that this myth is the origin of the phrase, "Between a rock and a hard place", referring to being forced to make a choice where both options are difficult.

Yeah they can, I actually lost pull to NIN and RDM pair the 1st time. They had a long fight and NIN got out his npc when he needed it, thats where we got the idea for our fight.
Rdm was able to stick some spells and the NIN had some miracle shadows.
It can be done tho, Good luck!
P.S. keep that haste up and you should be ok.

Have a question about party setup for this guy. The other night me <75rdm>, 75thf, his 2nd chara 65whm and my friend 61whm killed sirocco nm with 'basically' the same strat. both whm kept mp for cure bombs and haste. i debuffed him all i could. i would pull hate with bliz III then thf would sa ws his a**. im thinking about doing same setup for chary since thf owes me favor for camping dagger with him^^. im pretty sure i can get a brd to help because i have been offering to help with everything he asks for in the last few days. i know that may be pretty devious ways to enlist help, but we are all good friends now. just wondering if we should be good. now just gotta get ToD.

Saw my first bot today while camping this. Group of people logged on in the room, placeholders were just killed, and Charybdis poped. At this time everyone in the room lagged to beat hell. Called GM even though I know it won't make a difference. Gonna try agin in a bit if anyone can help names Dusevans in Unicorn!

well killed this today.....and I gotta say this NM has tons of acc and a smn rdm nin rdm we got owned....then brd and thf joined and was simple fight then.....btw the smn i was helping get her Joy toy lost the lot to a brd....so i lotted and won :) i was gonna pass til i saw she lost to the brd.....

74 or 75 Thf, wearing a pair of bat earrings, O Hat (etc.) with capped evasion, makes Charby look kind of foolish. Charby has this blind that lasts forever, thf gets an addl 30 evasion with the bat earrings. Rdm keeps enfeebs on Charby, does not engage until the end, while Charby keeps missing the thf. Ya, a bard helps, but 74-5 thf/nin and rdm75/blm can do him nicely. Like any duo on NM, takes a little while. Thf should try to pull with steal if close enough, or have tp to do a SA/DE on him if Rdm has claimed.

ok im a 75 RDM/WHM was bored and thought: lets go visit charyb.
I never was there so was first time.
A PT fought him and did well, not sure about setup guess it was:

TFH/NIN , BRD/NIN, PLD, WHM, and a nin for the case im maintank dies.
All was ok they did good on charybdis, i had tank in target and then BAM he was death from 100% if i remember right.
PLD and NIN tanked him then but had no chance, i said they should invite me and that i wont lot on sword.
They did, i raised the nin and rest of pt died, so then i had hate and bind/gravity charyb with the weakened nin to get unweakened so he can tank again.
It worked but we still had some death ppls and no mp to raise them really.
Problem was i had to cure tank by times and with that i always got hate, because thf/nin couldnt get much hate with normal hits after he started tanking again.
So i died but had RR up.
Once back i cast RR,slow2, regen on tank and tried to rest for mp, however i still had to heal the tank by times and then again got hate, i died again.
Short after the tank.
Charybdis misses 80-90% of his hits against the tank, but he hits repeadly for occasionally 2-6 times ( i never counted 8 ).
So YES your tank will get hit but thats not the problem, the problem is if he dies its getting exciting.
And for the case your tank dies, even he has highest eva in the game and is very skilled you need a RDM to kite him.
Without a good RDM you prolly have no second chance then to get BACK up with your wiped pt.
In the End my pt which i wanted to helped, wiped on charybdis when he was under 1%, i was only one alive weakened after second death and other guys got claim again for second time and killed him. ( They got claim as my pt wiped first before i got invited, but died also, their tank was way more worse )

Mainproblem 1: There is not much space to use a kite/nuke tactic if you want to solo him.
There is only a small ramp not really long, lets say you bind charyb on top of the ramp right after entering the room, and bind goes off he comes down to you, when he is down you bind again and have to run near beside him for 1-2 seconds to get back on the ramp up.
In this time he prolly can hit you 2-3 times.
Once up again you wait until bind goess off and he comes up to you again > bind > you go down.

Mainproblem 2: Bind Recast Time - I have 298 Enfeebskill and Aquillo Staff and around 104 mnd in normal setup, it often lasted long, but if its not lasting long, you ******* because then he moves with gravity on and even with that he will engage you again in 5-10 seconds, because of the small area.

Mainproblem 3: He is highly resistant to sleep, 298skill ( AF Body,Spider Torque, 1 enfeeb merit yet only ) + Pluto Staff did not worked.
However only tried one time.

A second RDM just for the case is good, so charyb is bound all the time if tank is down.
Also have a good second Tank " for the case ".

Heya! I recently returned to the game and was looking for a kind soul or 2 to lend a hand w/ this guy. I have a 75 RDM , 70 SMN or 65 PLD I can go as. I looked through a couple of these posts and didn't see any Wars helping out with this fight. Is this cause the tp gain by this NM would be a death trap for aspiring Joy Toyers? If so I'd like to know support that a war should give to this effort. I'm a war and want to get this sword but will people laugh at me if thats the only job I have to contribute to this fight?

should I just stand back and pull hate if it goes after a mage or something? or only attack once in a while? Maybe /sam and bring along a GA for breaks or weapon I can use a stun WS?

Or would I be of more help with my 64rdm giving support to people actually doing things?

Please let me know. I want this sword but I don't want to be a leecher.

WAR can best contribute by building TP on other mobs or sleeping to 300, then using TA+Steel Cyclone on the tank (or SA+Steel Cyclone if the tank has enough hate).

Do some spike damage but avoid meleeing him unless you're just burning him down with a lot of melee and healers.

So i sent my mule to go get Charybdis ToD yesterday, and woke up to find my mule sitting in lower jeuno. I was interested in this so i checked to see what exactly happened and noticed that Zuug the Shoreleaper killed me. Obviously, a group of people decided that they didnt want me to know the ToD so they killed Zuug placeholders till he spawned and then trained him to where i was. Because NM's do not despawn, and the fact that Zuug drops crap now, he is the ultimate afk MPKer. I would have called a GM but what the hell are they gonna do right? Just wanted to know the possible ways someone would do this. Wouldn't they have to kill themselves so that he would walk back to camp? IF so i know the culprit!

It is a shame that people lack what is know as common coutesy and fair play. I mean comon to kill a level 25 whm Taru that couldnt hurt a fly... Thats going too far!! Almost miss the RMT in SSG now >.>

my evasion isn't even capped @75. and it did skill up to 269 during the fight. popped a jack o lantern and had a 60brd casting double mambo. if ur thf, don't let ur friends take hate if they don't have shadows. they will die lol. rdm died when he claimed before i could even get across the room. blm died casting stun right after. use ichi as much as you can. it overwrites itself and you can save Ni for after AoE if ichi timer is down. only time my hp hit orange was when cross attack hit for about 600 cuz i only had 1 shadow up. otherwise, maelstrom took off 249 every time i think. smooth fight for thf tank. only evasion gear i used was Ohat SH eva torque and war gloves +1. 75thf, 75rdm, 75blm, and 60brd. fun fight, kinda long. gl joyeuse seekers.

My friend and I are both warriors and we really want this for a great merit TP build. So we agree to get on early in the afternoon and try to claim or at least get ToD. Fast-forward 17 hours later, we were tired, we'd stayed up all night, and finally Charybdis decides to visit.

Well, word had gotten out because 3 HNMs were there for some odd reason, all JP. We were getting R1000 easily. We knew we'd be outclaimed, and we were. The ToD took so long that my friend couldn't make it in the afternoon because he had dynamis. We were both sad but I decided that I'd be back the next day, just to hold ToD.

Well, I had an idea. I have access to my friend and my girlfriend's account. So I went as bard/whm, I dressed my friend as a full evasion ninja, and my girlfriend as rdm/whm. I figured at the very worse, I could try to claim and see how it goes.

Well, 2 hours later, he pops, I buff my characters and claim. What a fight. I was hasting, curing, doing songs, enfeebling, counting shadows, the whole thing and 3 different systems. The fight took about 40 minutes with some pretty close calls. I took a bad Cross Attack that took my friend down to 59 HP. But somehow, I pushed on.

It started to go really badly when we were near the end. I started to nuke with my gf's character so she was running out of MP. My shadows fell and I luckily evaded 6 swings back to back with only 200 HP. I managed to get back up and finish him with a thunder 3. Only got the joy toy, but that's all I wanted. That had to be the biggest rush I've had playing this game in quite awhile, and needless to say, I have an awesome memory to brag about. Good luck to everyone else, may all your Charybdis pop red.

I just got my Joytoy last night, spent about a day and a half camping it and keeping TOD.
A bunch of my LS members pulled together and decided to come help me kill it. We were all there at the opening of the spawn window and had minimal competition. Well, Charby didn't decide to pop until about 6 hours into his pop window, also about 30 secs after our BRD had to go AFK. So I get a little too excited and claim it right away with flash and end up with hate on me, had a thf/nin there who was intended to be the tank but that didn't happen, lol. So things go pretty badly and we end up wiping just as our BRD comes back in time to get killed along with us.

Luckily a very nice RDM and BST were there to get TOD and decided to help us out by giving us some raises and ended up joining us to help kill Chary. We rested up and adjusted our strat a little bit and claimed Chary again and went to work on him. THF/NIN did some of the tanking with double mambo while my DRK/NIN friend would kite it around after doing a WS hehe. I melee'd it and threw out flashes and cures and everyone else did there thing keeping chary debuffed. When he died I was so excited to finally have my Joyeuse after nearly 3 years playing this game.

Alliance setup was PLD(me),DRK(Denk),THF(Jubeii),BRD(Americus),SMN(Kainelestat),BLM(Crimso),BLU(Earl),RDM(Navaric),BST(Amillia),PLD(Quol)
took about 10 mins to kill, everyone kept there head and even tho hate was chaotic and bouncing around it went relatively smoothly.

So me and my ls mates kill the phs and nin leaves and rdm too so we just sit there killing phs thf (me) pup and blm still and a rdm comes in we team up and soon after charby pops were alone in the room so we get a nin and brd from and the nin brings a whm so we start fighting him and get him to like 60% then then nin dies so the thf (me) take up the role of tanking and with haste cures and the help of mambo X2 he gets to like 10% the people stop curing me and start just nuking XD i die to a whirlwind but in the end we still get the kill.
Took one day to get joy toy LOL they say this sword isn't easy.

Ok, so I just got my Joy-toy today.

Kept ToD for 2 days, until I got some people from the ls to help me out.
ToD was 6:45 A.M. this morning. It popped at about 9:30 P.M., dead at 9:58.

This fight was VERY easy, much, much easier than I had expected.
Setup:
Drayco: THF/NIN75
Me: PLD/WAR75
Saberleo: 70SMN/WHM
Crimsontide: 67WHM/BLM

THF tanked, only got hit by few by TP moves.
I DDed part of the fight, stopping sometimes for MP, but I noticed much more TP moves, so I can see how zerging this wouldn't be so efficient...

GL with all your Joyeuses!

well ive been keeping tod for about 4 days and i wake up and decide to camp it, get ls over and we start killing ph. It gets to the 17 hours mark no pop, 18 hours finally it pops we claim get drop new joyeuse for me :) thx to sylvias thang kade jolin hoyoo fush ark and nyjc.. lol not a bad fight gotit to 50%n easily and then nins shadows went down for 2 sec and death lol. 2 nin left fighting , using blind pots doing good not getting hit t all only by aoe. drk using absorb tp and stun, same as blm. blm starts nuking does 3 nukes for 1000 each gets hate and dies lol. Nin mijin gakures ( dam ark) lol chary is left with a sliver of hp 1 nin left fighting it lol. drk goes melee souleater last resort and hits it for 200 a hit, few hits later he drops :).

Later me, a nin from ls and his friend a bard decide were gonna get one of his friends a minstrel coat. he logs in his friend, we start camping novv get his cloak. then we decide hmm lets go try for his joytoy, we go to chary there were a few campers, kill 1 round of ph go kill zuug ph. we go back time for ph pop, chary pops!i didnt expect it so i wasnt rdy at all lol. bard claims it with Elegy lmao. People were soo slow. Anyways we start killing fight was smooth and easy with brd rdm thf. Other campers especially a bard kept trying to steal hate by curing. We kept fighting it gets to 1% i chainspell nuke with aero3 it goes down. person goes onto other acc and cast lot for it he gets it :). His friend wakes up next day and realizes he now has joyeuse and minstrels coat :)

well iv spent 7 hours here an there use to be 2 devil mantas here...some nin came in an killed them both once....they spawn back....she comes back kills both of them again...only 1 spawns...been about 2 hours now an only 1 devil manta....WHAT DOES IT MEAN???

The PH mob can spawn outside the door. But the actual NM will ALWAYS pop in the room. Just outside the unmarked door you will find the 2nd manta.

Fought him last night. Gil seller told a PLD in my LS he was up as he was farming in SSG. I go down to help him out. We stand there for a few minutes and try to get some help to come when another NIN/THF and WHM/BRD show up. I claim it with just us 2 with a SMN and eventually a BRD on the way. This actually went better than I thought and had the PLD not cured himself instead of me on accident before I died, we might've been able to pull it off. Or if we had some meds for extra MP.


I solo it down to about 60% with his support and the above happens me and the PLD die just as the BRD shows up. The other NIN and WHM claim after it regens to about 80% and go to work on it. They get it down to about 10% when they get an add from the roaming DC Devil Manta which aggro's the NIN who was fighting in the water oddly... The NIN made the mistake of casting on the add so with no Provoke, it aggro'ed his support WHM after a few casts.


They wipe at about 8% and we take back the claim and finish it off and the PLD and BRD (also a 75 WAR) lot the sword. PLD wins and we head out. Fun fight. Some say a NIN has trouble even tanking him which I found hard to believe.


But, I do have better than average gear, but nothing too awesome. I also had all the +evasion items I could round up on as well. Blind, Paralyze, and Slow own his face though, always keep them up.

Did it earlier with three people. Really only needed two of us.....I was just there to cast lots on my Joy. 75THF/NIN, 69BRD/WHM and I as 71RDM/RDM. BRD threw mambos/bar watera on THF and elegys on Charby. I just kept THF in haste mode. I didint even use any enfeebling magic because I wanted to keep my MP up incase I had to spam some cures on THF. This THF was so mighty he only got hit 3-5 times the whole fight. It took awhile but we got him.

He popped about 2 hours into his window.

I cant wait to pair this with my new Mensur ^^

Good luck on getting your Joys...its worth the fight.

After about a week of camping this biotch, I finally have my Joyeuse!

Our setup was:

75THF/NIN (me)
75NIN/WAR (mura)
75RDM/BLM (epic)
75BLM/RDM (golo)
75BLM/WHM (gaon)
75BRD/WHM (poor)

I can't stress how important BRD was to me in this fight. I'm sure others have beaten Charby without the usual THF/NIN+BRD setup, but BRD really did shine when it came to my THF tanking. W/ dual mambo I was able to cycle my utsusemis without much problem. Just be ready for those AOEs if your utsu recast is down, because Charby's hits hurt, esp if they're 8 hits in a row lol. Always fight up the ramp to avoid linking with other mantas, and its important to keep track of every manta death if you have competition in the room. Just count 16 min after each death and give your party heads up when to be ready to claim. Other than that, just be patient and have every enfeeble possible on it with as little melee. Good luck to you future joyeuse people!
