Kirin Special Attacks
Historical InformationQilin (Kirin in Japanese) was a creature in Chinese mythology said to have the head of a dragon, the antlers of a deer, the scales of a fish, the hooves of an ox, and the tail of a lion. It is said that the Qilin is a benevolent creature, only becoming violent when a good person is threatened by a sinner, in which, among other ways, it will attack the sinner by breathing fire. While the dialogue spoken by Kirin when he is spawns suggests that he is one of the Shijin of East Asian mythology (see Seiryu, Suzaku, Genbu, and Byakko), he is never in actuality associated with them, but is another prominent creature.

Does the monster drop a single abjuration to be lotted on by all? Or does it give everyone an abjuration? Same thing with seals - does everyone get the seals of the gods?
We've killed him 3 times now, and each time he dropped about 3-4 items. If an abjuration drops only one person gets it, just like anything else. He actually drops more abjurations then is listed here, I believe. Check the list at:

What exacly does hnm's realy mean? i know nm stands for notoriuos monster.
Depends on who you ask, but the JPs made the term, and they say it's "Hard NM", lol. Those inventive JPs, eh? =P
HNM means Hyper Notorious Monster. all HNMs grant you special titles after you defeat them and they are all over level 75.
I thought it was High Notorious Monster!
But pft, ether way, HNM means "You better have a high level party/alliance, or you're going to be taking a nap. ^^;"

one thing that does not seem to be true is the definition that HNMs give you a title for killing them - for example, since when is Stray Mary a HNM? you get a title for killing her and she's not even a rare spawn.

Actually, it's Honorific Notorious Monster. It bestows an honorary title, IE Kirin Captivator, etc.
No, no. We all know it's "Hung Notorious Monster." You don't think they got that tough without the goods, do you?

well when i said all HNMs give you titles, i didn't mean there weren't regular NMs that give you titles as well. i mean we all know the black dragon is NOT an HNM, right? to my knowledge, the following names are all the HNMs in the game because they're very high lvl and they grant titles, as i stated earlier:
behemoth (title: behemoth bane),
king behemoth (title: behemoth dethroner),

nidhogg (title: nidhogg slayer),

Our LS just defeated Kirin on Asura tonight. 2nd or 3rd LS to do it on our server I think, probably first non-JP LS on our server.

LOL a lot fo the players you can see on the screenshots are Japanese, so I don't know what you mean by "non-JP LS".
I suppose that is a bad term, since we do have some JP players in our linkshell, but the majority of our players are from North America and Taiwan. The other LS's on our server who have killed Kirin are entirely JP players as far I know.
We also had 6 people from a different LS (the ones with the bright red link pearl), and I think their LS is primarily Chinese players, not Japanese.

I don't know about you guys but I cant wait to fight this guy. Once I'm capped of course :). I think fighting alongside 35 other people for several hours against this incredible beast must be pretty intense. And having one of his drops gives you serious bragging rights after all ;)
So im just guessing that this guy doesnt aggro, because its not listed.. kind of strange for a bad *** NM, but maybe hes so confident in his power that he doesnt care about the puny ones scurrying about... after all they are all "Too Weak To be Worth While"

Most likely the instant you trade it the appropriate items, it spawns and attacks the person who traded them.

Everyone says he's so hard. I think we forgot the Cristmas event known as the Twinkleing trent. That guy had exacly 1 million Hp to start and on most servers tokk up to 7 solid days to beat. And dont even start telling me any server beat him in a day or two. I know the times for all the monsters on all the servers. But before you go one saying he is the hardest just think of what is to come and some of the stuff FFXI programers are thinking up right now. Keep on fighting and try not to die.
well Twinkling treant was a special NM, originally it was invincible since the programmers stuffed up the code. but 1day later they placed an emergency update to fix that. and die to it being a temp special NM, its not really counted as the hardest NM to beat since you will probaly wont see that NM anymore after that event.

literally meaning something like:
good work person. truly Ragnarok's biggest. Your future conquest (overcoming? subjugation?) has good luck.

I'm guessing this is the motto of the LS that defeated him in the pics, as a similar translation appears at the foot of the page linked below.
Man...this dude definitely seems to be the god of enemies in the game currently. Although that does seem pretty ouch right now, however, give a year or two and the cap will most likely rise a few times, making this guy a mere pushover...though there will by then be much more nightmare-esque monsters to encounter O_O;
Recommended party: 18 x Lv. 75 (outside help possibly needed)

If I ever see this, I'm going to run up to it with my Ninja and use Mijin Gakure on it.

Although he drops kirins osode which is by far rarest and most expensive item in game

i woul also like to add that king behemoth is just plain over rated there are many hnm's that are much stronger than him such as the arch angels for the rank 10 missions

Astral Behemoth doesn't exist.. He DID... It was an event like the trees though.
