Description

To get this quest, talk to an NPC named Alfesar in Rabao at (H-7) near the pond rim. He will ask you to find something in the Quicksand Caves.

Make sure you have a map ready. Head off to the Quicksand Caves entrance in Eastern Altepa Desert at (J-7). You must find a targetable ??? in there and touch it for the key item Ancient Tablet Fragment.

How to get to the ??? points:

You will only need Sneak for this quest.

Enter through the (J-7) entrance of Eastern Altepa. This is our starting point, you will not need to check any other entrances.

Okay, on this first map you're in you'll notice there's a drop at (I-7)/(J-7). If you fall on the Western side of the drop it will take you to 1/5 of the spawnpoints. If you drop down the Eastern side, this route will eventually lead us to the other 4/5 spawnpoints.

If you choose to go West, hug the right wall until you you're in a dead end with a beetle at (H-6). This is a spawnpoint. If it is not there exit at (D-5) to Eastern Altepa and return to the (J-7) entrance to our starting point to now check the other points.

If you go East, hug the right wall until you come to the open room. There is a spawn point in the middle of this room around (H-10) or (G-10). If it's not there, continue to head west hugging the right wall until you reach the other smaller room. In the Northwest corner of this room in (E-9) is another spawn point. On the map, you'll notice there is another drop thing. Drop into the (F-10) portion in the Southeast corner, signified by a little A.

You are now on the 2nd map.

Follow the path through until you reach the junction at (F-9). Turn right first, and travel to around (D-9) to check this spawn point. If it isn't there, turn around and head East. You'll reach the open room and you're going to want to take the Southeast passage from this room in (I-10). Take a left at the junction and head East until you reach (L-11)... the last spawnpoint. If it is not at this point, then it has sadly moved and you're going to want to start again.

Spawnpoints on first map: H-6, H-10, E-9 Spawnpoints on second map: D-9, L-11

Once you obtain the Ancient Tablet Fragment, return to Rabao and talk to Alfesar again. He will tell you to go to San d'Oria Cathedral to meet Charlaimagnat.

Charlaimagnat is located downstairs. When you first enter the chapel turn left and at the end of the hallway before the Manuscript room there is a stairway on the right. Talk to him to get the reward. He'll ask you to come back another day because he need to translate the scroll first. Return to him when he's done and you'll get your reward.

If you do not have the Map, you can go to http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/ and pull up the map. Then use the Points he mentions in the above thread to find your way. Also you only need Sneak.

just sneak alone doesnt cut it, you need invisible too. i just got slaughter cause i was aggroed by sight.

Beetles there don't even aggro sight, they link but don't aggro for anything. >.>

Ok dude, you only need Sneak in Quicksands. >.> If Invis was needed I would have known by now, considering that I went on several AF Coffer quests there, many Coffer hunts, and not to mention I farm there!!!

Don't sit there and spout misinformation. If you got slaughtered by a Beetle or Spider in Quicksands then your dumba** most likely tried to rest right in front of one of em or had a party member aggro one. Anyone who has pt'd on either side of Quicksands knows that you don't need Sneak or Invis to walk by a Beetle or Spider. And if you got killed by a Lizzy then geuss what? Then you were wondering through the incorrect part of Quicksands, if you went to the Quicksands through West Altepa then that was your problem as the ??? isn't in that part of Quicksands.

And if you try and say that the Ants will aggro you without Invis, then it's apparent that you've never been to the Quicksand Caves. As the Ants only aggro to noise not sight.

Don't talk about something you don't know, idiot. >.>

Other than beetles at the entrance, nothing aggroes sight, so you should only need sneak.

Just got my tablet ^^.

Okay, after doing this quest twice (on two characters):

- First character (60~something PLD/WHM), I go the east route looking for the ???. Nope, not there. I die after checking the 4th ???.
Go back, chose the west route and it's there, just around the corner.

- Second character (37WHM), I go east route again, and no, it's not there. And again, I die after checking the 4th ??? spawn point. Reraise, run around, west route et voila it's there.

Moral of the story?

Probability isn't fair :(.

Easy one, if you have sneak, you have teleport-altep
Just a helpful hint...

I don't know the lowdown, whether you have to wait for the next Vana'diel day or what, but I do know this much -- you need to zone after you give the letter and the missing piece to Charlamagnat, before he'll give you the scroll of Teleport-Altep. I turned the quest in to him at 2am last night, waited a full Vana'diel day, nothing happened. Went to bed, woke up right next to him, talked to him again, still nothing. Then I zoned from N. Sandy to S. Sandy and back, went to the Cathedral, and bam, scroll. So zoning definitely has something to do with it.
Just a helpful hint...
# Sep 05 2006 at 6:18 PM Rating: Decent
I tried zoning into S.San d Oria as said and nothing, so I think it is a combination of wating the in game day and zoning to get the scroll.
Just a helpful hint...
# Mar 15 2007 at 5:34 AM Rating: Decent
I think you have to wait until japanese midnight until you get the reward, after zoning of course.
Just a helpful hint...

The guide above was great. I found the ??? at the first point to the west. Only had to use one sneak the whole time in QC.

Just want to reiterate what some of the recent posts have said: you do not, under any circumstances, have to return to Rabao after you've talked to Charlaimagnat. You simply have to wait a long time for Charlaimagnat to give you the scroll. For anyone who returned to Rabao and then went back to Charlaimagnat, it was just coincidence. I did this quest last night, checked a couple times with Charlaimagnat before going to bed, no scroll, logged off, logged on again this morning, and got the scroll. Never got anywhere near Rabao once I left. It just takes several hours for Charlaimagnat to give you the scroll. I'd say about a full Vana'diel week would probably do it.

I didn't have to wait until jp midnight when I did this recently.

This one was pretty easy, used another website for it cause i didnt had a map from Quicksand Caves.
These maps looks like the maps from FFXIatlas but i think this site is much better.
Take a look and think everyone can get it as easy as i got:

- Eastern Altepa Desert (Cave entrances)

- Quicksand Caves

after the 5 and half hour, with a death, ordeal that was Teleport-Yhaot, I was pleased to find this at the first point I tried, to the west! Happy :) Worth 400k on ifrit
Really, really easy.

This was the easiest, for me, of all the teleport scroll quests. Apparently, I had already gotten this quest a long time before I was even interested in doing this. So, I headed off to the far, upper right corner of Eastern Altepa Desert (I think it was Eastern) and entered Quicksand Caves from there. I had no map and no clue where the spawn points for the ??? were, so I just casted Invisible and Sneak. I roamed around the caves, jumped off some ledge, went down a few tunnels, and walla! I came to an open room with Anticans and Beetles, which had the ??? on the ground, near a wall. I was a level 58 RDM and was scared of being attacked if I took off Invisible. I waited 'till the Anticans and Beetles (didn't know if they would aggro or not) turned around, took off sneak, and checked the ??? for the Ancient Tablet Fragment. I cast Escape, returned to Alfesar, went to Sandy and talked to the guy there, waited a few days, and got my scroll. Eight more levels until I can use it!

Alfesar @ H-8 NW corner & another entrance ...

Just two updates:

1. Alfesar is in the NW corner of H-8 just East of the Moggles and beside the oasis. He is a friar in long robes and is very tall.

2. I found I could get to two of the spawn points from the G-9 Eastern Desert entrance to the Quicksand Caves. The two points are D-9 and L-11 (Eastern route - second map as stated by the quest).

To clarify things, how to do this quest:

1. Accept the quest by talking to an NPC named Alfesar in Rabao (H-7 near the pond rim.)
He will ask you to find something in Quicksand Cave.
2. Head off to Quicksand Cave in Eastern Altepa Desert (just because entrance from this side is nearer to the place you need.
3. Find a targetable ??? in there this guide has the list off all 5 spots that's possible for a ??? to spawn.
4. Check it and obtain the Key Item then return to Alfesar and talk again, he will tell you to go to Sandoria Cathedral to meet Charlaimagnat.
5. Talk to him to get the reward but you have to first talk to him to report and give the key item, then he'll ask you to wait a few days because he need to translate the scroll first. Return to him when he's done and you'll get your reward.

You'll need relatively high Rabao fame (Sandoria related, thanks gwentomnion for the correction!) in order to activate this quest.

You need Fame 4 in Sandy, which is easy to obtain with like 10 stacks of moss, and even that is overkill.

actually its Sand'oria fame thats related to Selbina fame which is related to Rabao fame, not the other way around, your selbina/Rabao fame does NOT go up with your Sand'oria fame
