In-Game TextDescriptionTo get this quest, talk to an NPC named Alfesar in Rabao at (H-7) near the pond rim. He will ask you to find something in the Quicksand Caves. Make sure you have a map ready. Head off to the Quicksand Caves entrance in Eastern Altepa Desert at (J-7). You must find a targetable ??? in there and touch it for the key item Ancient Tablet Fragment. How to get to the ??? points: You will only need Sneak for this quest. Enter through the (J-7) entrance of Eastern Altepa. This is our starting point, you will not need to check any other entrances. Okay, on this first map you're in you'll notice there's a drop at (I-7)/(J-7). If you fall on the Western side of the drop it will take you to 1/5 of the spawnpoints. If you drop down the Eastern side, this route will eventually lead us to the other 4/5 spawnpoints. If you choose to go West, hug the right wall until you you're in a dead end with a beetle at (H-6). This is a spawnpoint. If it is not there exit at (D-5) to Eastern Altepa and return to the (J-7) entrance to our starting point to now check the other points. If you go East, hug the right wall until you come to the open room. There is a spawn point in the middle of this room around (H-10) or (G-10). If it's not there, continue to head west hugging the right wall until you reach the other smaller room. In the Northwest corner of this room in (E-9) is another spawn point. On the map, you'll notice there is another drop thing. Drop into the (F-10) portion in the Southeast corner, signified by a little A. You are now on the 2nd map. Follow the path through until you reach the junction at (F-9). Turn right first, and travel to around (D-9) to check this spawn point. If it isn't there, turn around and head East. You'll reach the open room and you're going to want to take the Southeast passage from this room in (I-10). Take a left at the junction and head East until you reach (L-11)... the last spawnpoint. If it is not at this point, then it has sadly moved and you're going to want to start again. Spawnpoints on first map: H-6, H-10, E-9 Spawnpoints on second map: D-9, L-11 Once you obtain the Ancient Tablet Fragment, return to Rabao and talk to Alfesar again. He will tell you to go to San d'Oria Cathedral to meet Charlaimagnat. Charlaimagnat is located downstairs. When you first enter the chapel turn left and at the end of the hallway before the Manuscript room there is a stairway on the right. Talk to him to get the reward. He'll ask you to come back another day because he need to translate the scroll first. Return to him when he's done and you'll get your reward. i am on the caitsith server and i am from bastok. i have 0 sandorian fame but i can still get the quest
i have heard from many people that Selbina and Rabao fame is a mixture of Bastok and San d'Oria. which does make sense of you being able to get the quest with only bastok fame and me only having san fame.
this is also why the moss (selb) quest helps to boost both san and bastok fames

My fame is 6 in Bastok and San d'Oria, 5 in Windhurst, 9 in Jeuno and 9 in Rabao. I've read elsewhere that Rabao fame is the same as Selbina fame, not San d'Oria.

The Price of the spell will very from server to server due to supply and demand.
Well I got the telepoint crystal, found Rabao, bought all 3 maps then went off searching for an entrance to Quicksands Cave. Stumbled onto the one at H10, Eastern Altepa Desert. Went in, and just decided to stick to the left wall. Found a ??? at L11. Had to drop invis but the antician has his back turned and got 'Ancient Tablet Fragment'. Warped home to Rabao and got 'tablet of ancient magic' & 'letter from Alfesar' and told to talk to Charlaimagnat on the lower level of the San d'Orian Cathedral. He asked me to come back another day. So just come back later and you get your scroll.

I entered from the J-7 entrance in East, and just simply hugged the right hand wall to H-6 of map #1.
It took me 3 tries of wandering around aimlessly and warping out when sneak was wearing at a bad time, and on the 4th I found it.

How much fame is needed? Right now I am unable to get this quest, my fame is something like 'You have done great things for this kingdom.'
Hi, I was the one who made this guide, and even I am not totally sure. I have heard people swear its bastok, and i've heard people swear its san d'orian, but I think i'll stick with the san d'oria one.

You need to have at least "You are famous in our kingdom".
That is San Fame, you need Rabao, or Selbina fame (samething). I got the quest with less fame than both of you for San, but more in Windurst than in San so that might be related... I can't remember what it was at the time. I think it was level 4 fame.. not sure though...

What exactly do you have to do? I talked to the squire in the basement of the cathedral now he keeps telling me to come back another day. Thats great, except that its been 2 hours (days in game time) and still no scroll. I've zoned out and back to no avail and am really stumped. Anyone know?
do you have the altep teleport crystal???
Try talking to Epedur, he seems to be the one you always go to to get the scrolls. Not a gaurantee that it will work though, just a suggestion. =/

I got lucky and got a map while leveling in the caves so I think I'm going to do this soon.
And it's funny how stuff goes for different prices on different servers. I mean 60K? what a rip off....Only 30-35K on the Diablos server and I bought mine for less than that before.

I teamed up with another WHM to do this quest today. At first, things were going great--we were able to eliminate areas that the ??? wasn't in and we found the first ??? within about 30 minutes of searching. After that, rush hour started and a bunch of japanese players were running around looking for it too. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to try and do this quest when the ??? is bouncing all over the zone. Moral of the story: do this at an off-peak hour so you can methodically try and find the ??? instead of guess-and-check.

I forgot to mention that the ??? will move regardless of whether or not somebody is clicking it. I saw it once and it disappeared when I got about 10 feet away from it. What horrible luck.
heres what i did. LVL 36WHM/15SUM. (spelling on zones may be incorrect)
i eneterd the quicksand caves at the entrance directly north (closest one) to the Korrolaka Tunnel in East Altept Desert.
Go straight down tunnel till you get to a big open room. the only exit to the room is to the left where it seems like the floor had broken, opening two passages. take the left passage. youll get to another open room with two exits (one infont of you and one left of you) take the left exit. youll get to another room that is open where it seems like the floor had fallen opening two more passages.. Again. If you take a left and follow that path you will soon find where the ??? is. If you take a right... well, thats a secret for summoners. (cloister of earth.. :) found it)

As if this quest were not frustrating enough..they place false alarm ??? in the zones!! Please don't make the same mistake I did and go bounding back to Alfesar! I found my real ancient tablet fragment at D-9 (hehe) in East Altepa J-7 entrance (map 2 of the above link).
So sorry for posting incorrect info above. >< You will recieve a key item from the proper ???

Some priest in Kazham told me to kill an Ivory lizard and get the drop from it in exchange for the Altepa Scroll

I highly recommend printing out an online map for this quest. All paths in quicksand caves originate in the entrance found in the NE corner of East Altepa (K-7). From there it's a series of drop downs at cliffs, so once you choose a path you cannot go back. These will all lead to the various exits. Once inside Quicksand Caves from this entrance, you will be in Map1 and you have your first dropdown fork at (I-7) -- which leads to an exit -- and (J-7).
Map1(J-7) will then lead to another fork --> (E-10) which leads to an exit and (F-10) that shortly leads to Map2, starting at Map2's (J-6).
I found my ??? at Map2 (L-11) and didn't explore much further.
You only need sneak in the map. The only thing that would aggro on sight are beetles, but beetles and spiders (and I think cactaur, but they're based on hearing anyways) are not aggro.

Uh i am on Ragnarok aswell and its 65k-125k
This is the hardest Tele Spell to get so yeah its worth that much i would say.

you obviously haven't done the Teleport Vahzl quest have you... kill enemies to get chest key then fight high levelers for chest. yeah..

Just did this quest last night. I went in from E. Altepa at (J-7). I followed the path until I found a room that dropped down. One cave entrance lead south and the other led South West. I took the southwest cave and I searched the rooms there. I found the ??? right next to a beetle in a corner room. I grabbed the tablet warped back gave it to Alfsar who told me to go to the basement in Sandoria and talk to Charlemaign. Went to Sandoria talked to him and he said he had to research the tablet and it would take a few days. Waited 4 game days came back and I got the scroll.
i found it here too, i didnt look at directions.. but i went into e.altepa.. into the J7 entrance..
then ended up at a place where it drops me down and splits off into 2 directions.. i went 'right'... if you're looking down at the forked tunnels, take the right...
i found it around there with 1 battle by the broken down wall.. (G-6) was the <pos> of the ???

I waited about 10 real-world hours and still could not get the scroll.
I'm hoping it works tonight when I get home from work. I am getting frustrated v_v

I followed these directions and found my Tablet in under 10 minutes. Thanks a bunch!
Still have to wait the game days to get the scroll. But the key item was exactly where you said it was. Nice directions. ^^

yea my piece of the tablet was at the 3rd ??? i checked. thanks so much for all the info here guys. as for the waiting, i hate it, and i dunno what it means but i happen to be back in rabao while waiting/leveling and i talked to the giver again, he says he received a letter from Chair. whatever his name is sayin the tablet got there ok and all. but i havent make it back to sandy for scroll yet. gl

I finished this quest also. I found mine at e-9. I would not have been able to do it without the map. I ended up dying while doing this quest, twice. The first time I did it, I didn't have a map. The second time, an antican came from I don't know where when my sneak wore off, and I was in the middle of recasting. Luckily for me, I had casted reraise before I started, so I didn't have to go back to my HP and start all over. Once the ants moved out I raised myself, and found a high level blm and 75 mnk in a nearby room and asked them to watch over me while my weakness wore off. Then I went on my way and found the ???'s at E-9. I was annoyed at having to wait to get my scroll from Chaulivaut or whatever his name was, but oh well :)
