Summary

Solve the riddle of the task book.

Walkthrough

To become a Paladin, you must complete three quests for Balasiel. You can start by getting the quests from Balasiel around level 10, but you can only change your character's job to Paladin after the third quest has been completed. Balasiel won't give you that one unless you are at least level 30, like all other Advanced Job quests.

The final task involves solving several riddles from ancient books of knightly learning. Balasiel first reads from the Book of Tasks; the meaning behind the passage is for you to ask the guards on the second floor of the guardpost in Victory Square for more information. When you speak with the first guard, Cahaurme (Southern San d'Oria, J-9), you receive the Book of the East and the second guard, Baunise (Southern San d'Oria, H-9), gives you the Book of the West. Additional sources tell you that you must retrieve something from Davoi and give it to Balasiel.

In area (E-10) of Davoi, there is a Disused Well. Be sure to have a form of Sneak and Invisible as the pugils aggro sound the orc aggro by sight. There will be a Davoi Mush near the well, but if you keep Sneak on, he won't be able to see you. Check the well to obtain a Knight's Soul. When you return to Balasiel with the item, he gives you a key item: Kite Shield and you are knighted. You can now become a Paladin.

#Anonymous, Posted: Nov 21 2003 at 2:20 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You could make yourself invisible. Only a WHM is capable of doing that since the THF doesn't get that ability until lvl 45. The WHM's invisible spell, which you get at lvl 25, only lasts for 10 seconds. With the number of orcs around, you might not be able to make it. You probably won't see many American paladins around for awhile. I was able to get it at lvl 30 but I won't say how.

Your statement is full of flaws including your ethics. Why come to this board if your only intent is to gloat. I did this today with the help of a friend and a Japanese player that we ran into. And this is how it can be done.
There are three basic ways. Solo it if you can cast sneak and deodorize. You may also purchase potions if you can’t cast them, but will be very expensive. Do not buy invis potion, it’s useless and the fish will see through it. The last method is bring a whm friend that can cast sneak and deodorize. I strongly suggest this last method. The safest way to the wall is by taking the rivers. The route I took is: I-8, I-9, H-9, D-8, and E-10. Along the way you’ll encounter fishes, orcs, war lizards and slime. Hope this helps.

Just because pugils agro to sound is no reason to neglect invis, Orcs agro to sight! you need invisible and sneak, and whm rdm and even nin can all cast sneak and invis.

Yeah, I nearly thought it was a junk item, wasn't sure of its value until I found out this tree root was related to the Pally sub quest - so I'll do this one along with the Dark Knight quest just for fun. I'm known as Sefirato on the Phoenix Server (also on the same linkshell as Stormshadow from above), haven't done the first quest yet but hopefully I'll be able to do this later tonight. Oh yeah, before I forget this, I'm a lvl 18 Elvaan RDM that just finished the subjob quest. :D

I got the quest at lvl 1 or 2(don't remember exactly) for the revival tree root. I got the second quest at lvl 13, but i haven't beat the second one, so i don't know about the third quest.
min lvl 30 note

You can do parts 1 and 2 before lvl 30, you only can do part 3 once you are 30+ however. So, he WILL talk to you if you are lower then 30, but you can't finish the last quest until you DO become 30, and watch out for davoi, you really do need a strong party to finish that part of the quest

This is really two separate quests. Yes, you can give him the revival root early on, and your title will change because that is just the first quest. You will NOT be able to do the rest, to actually get the Paladin job, until you are level 30+.
Please be aware that there is a great deal of incorrect information on this site.
#Anonymous, Posted: Nov 13 2003 at 6:13 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I took his first quest (for the revival tree root) when I was below lvl 10 (no sub job). Disbelieve me if you like, but it's true. My friend bought us both revival tree roots and we both completed the first quest pre lvl 10 (neither of us had subs) and had the title Knight in training. If you need proof that you don't need to be lvl 30, I am lvl 17 now on the Phoenix server. Msg me in game (Stormshadow) if you would like to see my Knight in Training title.
I have been able to talk to him

I was able to talk to the old man successfully at lvl 8. Is this something that may have changed or maybe you can do all the quests and not change to paladin until lvl 30? I would really like to know!

This quest is actually three quests, the last part that gives you the palidan flag you must be level 30 in any job to begin.

You have to be 30 in a single job... and it can be any job, not just warrior or white mage.
for people who start in Bastok

For those wanting to do the paladin subjob quest and who start in Bastok, you can get the revival tree root fairly easy by going to South Gustaberg and head to Vomp Hill and kill every black wolf in sight at night. Eventually (I got it on the 4th or 5th kill I think) it will drop and these are relatively easy mobs at 8 or 9.

Of course, you still have to head to San d'Oria to finish it, but the root is something you can get while getting exp.

I wanted to know if you have to be level 30 in any class and then take the quest, or do you need to be level 30 in both warrior and white mage?

You just have to be level 30 something. You can be level 30 blackmage if you wanted.

Another note

On Ragnarok, I bought a Revival Tree Root for 200 gil or so, and it worked. I was level 11 at the time.

I'm currently wondering if it's possible for me to Barge directly into the caves and do the quest. I was actually able to GET the Ordelle Cave quest at level 11...
HEADS UP To Newbies

I got the Revival Tree Root around Lv7-9... so heads up to anyone looking looking to be a paladin (or knows that someone is). Considered selling it as junk a few times, good thing I kept it though!
