Summary

In order to become a truly great hunter, one must be accepted by mother nature. In order for that to happen, one must gain the fang of a tiger, the fanged king. But it does not sound like any old fang will do...

Walkthrough

Note: You must be level 30 in order to begin this quest.

Speak to Perih Vashai at (K-7) in Windurst Woods. She wants you to watch an old sabertooth die and bring his bones back to her.

Head to the Sauromugue Champaign. Walk up the hill at (L-8) and find the cave located at (L-10). Three sabertooth tigers roam around outside the cave, so it's probably best to ride a chocobo there and bring a form of warp with you.

Examine the old bones and Old Sabertooth will spawn. Wait for him to die naturally, then examine the bones again to receive the key item: Old Tiger's Fang and bring it back to Perih Vashai and you will be flagged to change jobs to Ranger.

Yea, ok well, heres my post. Don't argue with me about this being wrong, that thats not how it worked, because this happened.

Right I went to get the key item. Seemed simple, looked at my map, saw where I had to get to, and proceeded down to the point in the description. Next time, Im reading posts though; had to back track for half a friggin mile to actually get there. Well, I get there, and see some guy fighting tigers, and had two on 'em. I was tired and not thinking, so I figure, eh this guy needs help; so assuming I was being nice, I blast the thing and kill it. Right, well as it turned out the guy was 60 (I was really tired <_>) and was really pissed about it. Told me to **** off when I gave him my reason, so I just walked off - I dont like asses much, really. Well, I went to the npc with the bones, and got the 'there are many bones here,' so I proceeded to wait for the old sabertooth. Thing spawned, and the whm killed it; no biggie, I figured, since everyone here says that if someone kills it, youre alright. Well, the damned key item wasnt there. So I waited for the next one, and again the whm kills it; still no key item. Now, even if I was being completely malicious and kill stealing on purpose, and was even completly rude about it, I did only do it once. This guy kept not only myself from getting the damned key item, but at least 3 other people, not counting the ones that left. Lovely GM's wouldn't respond to it, and I swear there has to be some kind of rule about preventing people from continuing quests, or should be, so we had to wait. Eventually I said hell with it and temp logged to eat. I came back just in time and saw the thing die of natural causes and boom! Key item. That jackass whm was pissed because I got it, go figure. Hell, he had the nerve to tell me that it was MY fault bystanders couldnt get this... *sigh*.

I dunno, maybe its just something with Kujata. But I swear, if someone kills the monster you cant get the key item.

A lvl 60 RDM was killing all the Sabertooths, including the Old Sabertooth.

I was hanging around, waiting for it to die naturally, and lost my chocobo. So I checked the bones, and it said "there are many bones here"

The Old Sabertooth spawned, and was quickly killed (and yes, I asked the player not to kill him) Checked the bones and Viola! Got the Key Item.

I didn't even see him die, just saw the message flash on the screen.

I have to say, the Widescan ability is pretty cool :)

Oh, and the ramp to L-10 starts at L-7/L-8

"He"? I don't think the Mithra *Chieftaness*, leader of an Amazonian group of fighters that keep their men barefoot in the kitchen, is likely to be a "he".

Damn this quest is SOOOOOOOO easy!
I finished it in less than 10 minutes. Only thing is that if your from Bastok, you don't know how to get to Saurogne Campagne (spelling?) from Windurst.
FINALLY GOD THE RNG JOB!

ranger in my opinion is the best job there is this quest is definatly worth doing for all of you that were wondering its not to tough if you plan out what your gona do first another thing to think of is the price of rangers mine is only lvl 9 atm but its costing me 1k for 99 bone arrows and i go through them in about 30 min of leveling so i usualy bring like 4-5 stacks with me when i go to solo and 8-9 when i go to pt if you think about that its alot of money so you bette be ready for tons of farming ^^

My Experence - Easy?
# May 31 2004 at 9:53 PM Rating: Decent
The quest seemed really easy from the guide here, so i decided to try it. I talked to Perhi and got cut-scene to seek out a great hunter (Old Sabretooth Tiger), went and set HP for WindWoods. Got a Instant Warp scroll from W.W.NPC at gate, a tip from a few here in the forums (Great Tip). Got on a Choco and rode to Sarumogue Champaign and went to the cave. No site of Old Sabertooth, just two Sabretooths outside (tickled them for fun!). Rode to back of cave in hopes maybe I just missed him die. Pressed TAB just to check, and sure enough "Pile of Tiger Bones". Got off, examined site and received Key Item: Old Tiger Fang. Used scroll to get back to Windy and talked again to Perhi got another cut-scene and ability to use Ranger. Estimated time 15 mins. Maybe a little too easy. But happy to finally have an advanced job.

Have been Killing Leeches for four days now and no Carb Ruby. :(

You actually have to go north to (L-8) to be able to get to the ledge where the cave is. then go south to the tigers. Hope this helps, as i didn't realize and almost died =X Also you don't really need to stay on your choco, you can dismount at the back by the bones, when it dies you can get the fang, the other tigers dont' go back that far so your safe (or atleast they didn't when i did it 5 min ago)

Here's an outline of the quest (some of this material is scattered below in posts):

1) You must be level 30 to start this quest, like all other quests, once you have it you can be whatever you want.

2) Talk to Perih Vashai, the Windhurst-Mithra Chieftain, who lives in Windhurst Woods at K-7. She will give you a very vague assignment to essentially become one with life and death in nature.

3) There is another Mithra who will tell you about the tigers - NOTE: you don't HAVE to do this, it has no bearing on the quest. It's here because if you didn't have the guide, or didn't have access to this forum or others (or if you just plain wanted to do it the "real" way in-game), talking to this person is the only way for you to have a clue about where to go.

4) Grab a chocobo and run from Windy to Sarumogue Champaign. Upon entering the zone from the South, stick to the eastern wall. You will pass L-10, the "location" of the tiger den, because you're not at the right elevation. Keep going north along that eastern wall until you reach a ramp. Going up the ramp, you can now double back south to L-10 and the tiger cave.

5) enter the cave. There is an "Old Sabertooth Tiger" that spawns here regularly. Note that there are also "regular," very healthy Sabertooths that spawn here too. Don't mess with them if you can avoid it - the old sabertooth, despite being remarkably weak, WILL aggro if you attack another tiger within its range. If the Old Sabertooth is attacked, or forced to aggro somebody, you will NOT get the key item. The key item is gotten by clicking on the pile of bones in the far back of the cave, but only AFTER the tiger has died peacefully (ie not been killed or aggroed).

Notes: The 'real' tigers around the cave entrance are quite frequently being farmed for hides, fangs and exp. This can sometimes make keeping the old tiger from aggro very difficult. Also: some people have reported just walking into the cave and grabbing the key item. This of course is simply a matter of timing (like getting the Carbuncle Ruby from the first leech you kill) - the game doesn't seem to differentiate between watching the tiger for the ENTIRE death cycle or just a very small sliver of it. There seems to be a radius involved too, so it's possible to be close (but not in sight because of the cave walls) to the tiger and still get the item when it dies.

I was doing the Ranger quest earlier today when I ran into 4 tigers guarding the cave. I decided to do this as my lvl 16 THF so I could death warp back to Windy. Anyways I called for help and a lvl 56 PLD killed the 4 tigers outside the cave and killed the Old one as well (crit 300+ dmg wow). I thought I was screwed but he told me to check the pile of bones for the item, I did and got it.

#REDACTED, Posted: Apr 30 2004 at 8:51 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) It is not true that you must be level 30 to start this quest. You must be level 30 _or_ higher.

You can start a quest with a character that is Lv30 or higher then switch jobs to a lower lvl character. He probably started it with a higher job and switched to his THF so he could use perfect dodge or something.

I think you just said the exact same thing meant by "You must be lvl 30 to start this quest" When someone says that, it usually means you have to be at least lvl 30 to start it.
not getting the key item the first time

I completed this quest but noticed something strange that I didn't see directly addressed in any earlier posts. I went to the cave at (L-10) and saw a lvl 45 rdm killing sabertooths. I had sneak/invis on and asked where I needed to go for the bones. He indicated the back of the cave and said he'd clear out the regular sabertooths so that none would aggro as I watched the old sabertooth die. He was fighting a sabertooth tiger when the old saber spawned and linked. He didn't attack the old saber and eventually the old saber died "naturally". However, upon examining the bones, I couldn't get the key item...it kept saying something to the effect that there were many old bones there (I did have the quest). I waited around and the old sabertooth spawned again and died "naturally", this time without being involved in combat. I then re-examined the bones and received the key item. I assume then that in order to get the key item, the old sabertooth has to die without being involved in any combat. Has any else experienced this, or was my situation unique?

I had exactly the same experience - the Old Tiger must remain ENTIRELY unmolested. An aggro will stop you from getting the key item, even if the tiger "died naturally" instead of being killed. The tiger's last few hours must be peaceful. This in fact is one of the more annoying aspects of this quest, as the area is almost constantly being farmed for the 'real' tigers.

about talking to the second person

i did NOT talk to the second person, i took a chocobo in jeuno and took me 5 minutes or so to ride to the cave, since there were other ppl there i just hang around in the cave on my chocobo, they got the fang so i decided to wait for the next spawn (just to make sure i dont lose my chocobo for nothing)

then a few minute later the old sabretooth spawned along with 3 ! sabretooths that where decent challenge (lvl 30 war/15 whm)

old sabretooth died, i drop off the chocobo, examine bones obtained key item "Old Tiger's Fang"

and went outside and sneaked past the sabres who luckly didnt see me :P but then a "tabar beak" comes up and kicks my *** bigtime, i didnt even have a chance with my 2hr :\
where did i go wrong?
# Feb 06 2004 at 2:19 PM Rating: Default
i went there and i got to the bakc of the cave and hopped off choco and examined the bones and got nothing. then two of the really strong sabertooths came and killed me. why didnt i get the item. i didnt see any old sabertooth but i did see a pile of bones.

Hmmm... that's odd. I came into an empty cave as well but still got the fang key item from the bones on the ground. I didn't see any tigers nor the death of the old tiger.

Could it possibly be that the tiger must die naturally wether you're there or not, and if it does die that way you can get it.. If you arrive ad the bones wont yeild thier fruit, maybe someone killed it just b4 u got there. just mho...

I know I didn't and am afraid I can't finish the quest without.. it would be a waste of time and money to go all the way back to Windurst...

well now this is getting quite repeatitive. about the title and how you get there and such but im seeing alot of questions unanswered.

() Which route do you take to get to the position
() so the tiger spawns, and dies randomly?
() you check the bones? i guess i gotta do this to understand.. im assuming its a ??? mark but what do i know...
() how much time does this take if you have instant warp to windurst. and what lvl is the tiger and what lvl is the mobs nearby? do i need a buddy with me or am i safe as a 30 whm?

Just did this 10 minutes ago, and I had the same questions as you. Here's what I found:

1. When you enter the map, Go all the way to the East wall. At L-8 you will get to a ramp. Follow the ramp, while hugging the East wall. You will see the cave when you get to L-10.

2. Tiger spawns randomly, and very often. You can see his hp bar when you target him. He dies pretty quickly too. You can just sit on your choco while you wait for him to die inside the tunnel. Not sure if it matters, but try to keep visual contact with him.

3. You click on a target called "Scattered Bones" to receive the key item. It's all the way in the back, regardless of where he dies in the cave. You can actually see the old bones before he dies.

4. I did this quest in exactly 15 minutes. Get the quest in Windy. Airship to Jeuno (7mins). Get choco and find cave (1min). Wait for him to die (5mins). Warp back to finish quest (2min).

The surrounding tigers registered as EP to me. I went as 36RDM/18BLM. I didn't get off choco to fight them though, because I didn't want old Sabertooth to aggro, and have to wait for him to die anyway.

I did this with a friend, but he wasn't needed. HOWEVER, he chose to run back to Jeuno and was chased by the 3 tigers the entire way. He's lvl 36BRD and made it back with 96HP. He slept them 15-20 times. They are VERY fast. Just get the scroll.

While you're in the cave, the tigers do run back and forth inside. But they didn't come near the back once the old Sabertooth died. As a whm, you could use Sneak. But you most likely won't need it. I didn't hide myself at all.

That's all the pertinent info I can think of. If you have any other questions, post and I'll try to check back to answer them.

Good luck!

Okay, the cave is up on a ledge that runs most of the length of the eastern wall of the Champaign. Head north, keeping along the side, and eventually you'll come to the ramp up. Then head back down to the cave.

im a lv 25 rng/12 war.and i like i cause with berzerk and and using barrage will get you very far. even though u do more damage with war u might want to have a thief lvd up cause when u go nm hunting(i have to do that i dont knoe about u) you will like the fact that you have treasure hunter and wide scan. ************* the only hard part was getting to the npc who gives u the quest(lol). i went there with a lv 30 friend to show me the way and all i did is get there go in cave... get tooth ... walk out of cave ...then the tiger spawned on me and it killed me but i just went to hp and it was simple as that.

Either way, RNG = ownij. I have wanted it since i saw someone do 700+ dmg with the 2hr/i like bows and whatnot so I thought it would be sweet. I was right. Expensive though. I go through arrows like there's no tomorrow.

Berzerk + barrage is a good way to get killed. It better be the death blow of the mob because if you're fighting a strong IT in a group, you'll find out why they say that rangers aren't tank, plus you'll know why a warrior that's tanking doesn't use berzerk. That double discovery will be painful.

As far as getting this quest done, Chocobo + scroll of instant warp will make this quite easy, unless I'm missing something.
