Mission Orders

At the request of the Optistery, you are to find former minister Karaha-Baruha's laboratory in Toraimarai Canal, and delve deeper into the mystery of the Book of the Gods.

Walkthrough

The gate guard will tell you that you have a new mission that involves cleaning up a book vault. He mentions that the mission comes from Tosuka-Porika in the Opistery.

Head to the Opistery in Windurst Waters and speak to Tosuka-Porika for this information and a cutscene, where he explains that there is a hidden room inside the Toraimarai Canal. He needs you to go there and meddle about for him. He will give you a key item called the Optistery Ring, which is required to open the door to the hidden room.

If you do not have a map of Toraimarai Canal, try to make sure that someone in your party does, or that you at least have a printed out version because it's a confusing place. You need to get to (G-8) on the second map. There are two entrances to the second map. You need to enter via the one around (J-9) so that you can get to the upper level.

Once at (G-8), you will be in a large room with bats and four NMs that you must kill to gain access to the secret room. Kill the four NM slimes in the room called "Hinge Oils". They do not link. Be advised that they have wide-range area effects that will knock a Tarutaru mage to zero hitpoints in one swoop, so mages MUST stay back.

Once all four slimes are dead, you can enter the Marble Door, which is up a staircase on the far side of the room. Once inside, you are to examine the "Tome of Magic". There are several of them, but the one that gives you the cutscene is the stack of books on the floor along the left wall, next to the chair with a skull in it. Go through a cutscene with the Star Sibyl, then head back to the Opistery and speak with Tosuka-Porika again to finish the mission and obtain key item: Blank Book of the Gods.

Solo'able

I "solo'd" the four Hinge Oils fast enough to get thru the door as SMN75. I did have a lvl61 NPC to help though (he wasn't a LOT of help), but nevertheless doable by one player.

Try to stand near the edges of the room to avoid bat aggro. Dia II pull with stoneskin and blink up, and summon Fenrir right after the pull and just beat down the slimes together one by one. Keep stoneskin up as you may have to recast fenrir during the fight. Use eclipse bite to speed things up if mp isn't an issue (a couple yag drinks wouldn't hurt but not absolutely necessary). When you run to other parts of the room to pull other slimes, remember to recast sneak.

You should use elemental siphon between battles to get your mp back up and also as a timer. You should be able to kill them fast enough so that you only siphon once through the whole thing tho--after the 2nd slime.

You can always use astral flow to negate perpetuation too.

Hope this helps any SMNs out there.

Pretty Easy compared to some of the missions up ahead. You will need to either have the map for Toramarai or have it up on ffxi-atlas or wiki. If coming from the Outer Horoto Ruins, you will want to take this path. Very Easy:

On the first map of Toramarai Canal on FFXI-Atlas, follow (F-5) to (G-6) until you come to the first waterway. Get onto the left ledge and follow it down to (H-6). Cross the bridge here so that your on the otherside of the Canal and continue heading south. There will be a staircase leading down into the water in (H-7). Go down the stairs and head north making your first possible right you can so that you will be heading East. Take your next right at (I-7) so that you are heading south. You will come to a "T" intersection at (I-8), make a left heading East again. Take the next right you possibly can take at (I-8) heading south. Again, another "T" intersection. Make a Left so that you are heading east. Keep heading east and you will be on the second map. Be careful here as you may get aggro here from Pugs, Skeles, and Bats from here on out. Sneak is recommended.

On the second map, you should still be in the water at a "T" intersection. You should see Pugs in the water. Send yourself a /tell <yourname> <pos> to make sure your in the right place. If you are at the correct "T" intersection, your /tell to yourself should say /t <yourname> (F-8). If it does, good!. Make a right heading south. eventually, you will see a staircase on your left if your heading south. Take it and head straight south again making your first left. Hope you have sneak up. Follow the hallway to a large circular room. Here are your four Hinge Oils.

Special Notes:

1.) Hinge Oils and Impish Bats will aggro 75's in the room. Recommend pulling the bats first and getting rid of them then focusing on Hinge Oils.

2.) 16 Minute repops on Hinge Oils. Its a pretty long time so do it right, do it fast, but do it up right.

3.) If for some reason you have the Hinge Oils defeated but you have three or four Impish Bats on you like I did, Run to the Granite Door and click it. This door when clicked doesn't ask you if you are "Sure you want to enter" or whatever. It just does it. Any mobs on you WILL go through the door and still attack you inside The Sixth Ministry Room so be prepared to still fight.

4.) Click the right Tome of Magic! If your cutscene didn't have Star Sybil in it, Try again.

5.) The door to the south take your to a teleporter that take you to Heaven's Tower. Dont take it unless you have your Cutscene as there is no way back to the ministry room from Heaven's Tower.

What troubles?
# Oct 20 2008 at 10:09 PM Rating: Good
I don't understand what troubles people are having here. I'm a Taru Rdm, level 75, and not well equipped for fighting, but I can solo these things without trouble. When I went to do this mission for my wife and my mother, (Tarutaru 60Mnk and Mithra 60Blm respectively) we were able to slice through these things without any worries to health. I'm far from being a great player, and with full healing equip, I can't imagine how people could have a hard time with this. Trust me, if I can do it, anybody can do it.
Cant get misson

Solo'd this today as 75RDM/32NIN (yeah gimp and only Utsuemi:ichi)

Managed to fight them off ok... First Two I needed to 'vert on, and no big catostraphies, however when it came to clicking the Marble Door... nothing happend besides a silly message stating "Four monsters (or something) guard the door"

So I logged off and had a quick look to make sure I'd done everything and I had.. I just hadnt realised they all have to be dead.. =\
As when I clicked the Door two of them had re-popped already >.<

Oh well... Guess I better go do that Mission where I get a portal charm so more ppl can help me kill it faster lol

70 blm, 69 whm/nin, 68 sam, 68 rdm

It was almost sad how fast these went down. The first key is to take out the bats in the stairwell so you don't have to worry about them. We timed a 16-17 minute respawn time on them (testing them while the sam was afk). These are really the only bats that you have to worry about as the other two mainly hang out in the center of the room.

After the first bat went down, we aggroed the first slime, which took a little longer than we expected. The whm summoned his npc which promptly got nailed with fluid spread for 950 damage. Drained the mp pretty good, but went down pretty easy. Aggroed the second slime and it went down in a matter of seconds with Tachi: Yukikaze > Circle Blade (Fragmentation) > Hexa Strike (Light). From there it is basically follow the right wall to get the next one, rinse, repeat, and do the same for the last.

We were able to get behind the marble door and see our cutscene before the bats in the stairs respawned and aggroed through the door because one of us was standing too close. We really only had one scare when the whm shadows and stoneskin were down, but even that wasn't too far below half hp. With this setup, you have the time to rest up mp about 100 pts or so between each fight if necessary. Keep a cool head and this mission is cake.

I just did this mission this morning, as 75NIN/WAR, solo'd each Slime and killed all 4 in under 7mins melee'n them, I fully enfeeb'd them and just melee'd and ws'd them to death. Only casted Ni once each fight, I dont get why people have issues with this fight it really is way too easy. Was spose to do it with a group of my 2 friends, but got bored and thought id at least make my way there to save on some time, but got bored and thought about tryin to solo one since everyone said its so hard, but they are pitiful ^^;, gonna have to do it again, I dont mind, wont tell my friends I did it by accident without em =p. Other thing of note, the south door (right of the door you come in and south of where you get the CS) has a portal which takes ya back to Heavens Tower, someone prob already posted it but just to repeat it >.>.

solo'd today as rdm/nin. was kind of hard because they respawn pretty quickly. im not very good at rdm so i think most rdm/nin could do it with a decent attack setup. I had to chainspell > fireIII the last one because the next one was about to spawn, also

me (BLM74) and a RDM70 helped a RDN63 friend try to kill these... it went bad. at first it was ok, RDM70/NIN was soloing, it was a lil slow, but after a bit he gravity so i could fireIV and i killed it in 2 or 3 nukes. i went to pull another one after rest and 2 bats aggroed me unexpectedly. i sleepgaed them til 2nd NM dead but then the RDM started fighting the 3rd NM and the bats kept waking up. they build up alot of resist sleep after 4 or 5 sleeps. so dont plan on keeping them asleep. also we tried to sleep the NMs 2 or 3 times, resisted every time. so dont use that as part of ur strategy. gravity works great tho. and Lv74- be careful. u will get aggro. the NMs seem to respawn in about 10 mins or so. were all sitting here dead praying that someone will help us. the oils AOE attacked killed the RDM and the bats resisted sleep and killed me. the 3rd rdm died right afterward ; ; 6000+ xp loss

Was messing around in Toraimorai around 55 (nin/rdm) when I ran into these things. They came up as NMs, so I thought what the heck, lets play... I got my 2hour... and should be able to get it off if I get into trouble.

So, I decided to run down to one and start having fun.

Using the elemental wheel, I was averaging about 70-80 dmg per spell, and took one down 1/2 it's life before I started slipping up and loosing shadows... It finally hit me for 270 damage!!! So, I got my shadows up again, healed myself to full life, and blew up for another 500 damage. Didn't get a good look at it's life before I died, but I hurt it something feirce:)...

Needless to say, I wasn't even on the mission at the time, and my ls told me (after I started the fight) what they were... Anyways, I am now in my mid 60's and can't wait to go back and try and solo them again... Unfortunately, I do realize I have 2 mins per oil to kill them... and don't think I can quite squeeze that kind of speed out... But it will be fun to try:)

Trio`d with ease

Did this as RDM/BLM 65 (me), WAR/NIN 70, and BLM/WHM 69.

With only one nuker and one tank, me healing/buffing/enfeebling, the oils did not gain enough TP to spam the AoE attacks. The AoE did do a lot of damage, but the mages were able to re-Stoneskin between them without problems.

Took a couple minutes per Hinge Oil but we were not in any danger (except the first attempt where I made sure to "stand back" and managed to aggro some bats behind me). The oils don`t link so it`s quite easy to pull one at a time to the room entrance.

Duod 75 rdm/blm and 72 bst/whm. Yah we are having lots of fun with missions at the moment lol.

The first oil we killed went badly- my bst friend was using the friendly neighbourhood bats as pets and they suck, so I ended up tanking and got beatzed up.

After that he went and found a decent challenge leech from further away and things went a lot better after that.

I don't know what the total time is, whether it's 10 min like someone says here, or 20 like it says on somepage, but we killed the first one slowly, accepted that it would respawn while killing the others, rested to full and carried on. There was about 9 min between death of 2nd one and death of 4th one, so you'd think we easily took over 10 min total.

fun fun fun

We just did this with 4 of us: 75NIN, 74BLM, 71PLD, and 70WHM. Fluid spread does hit hard, did about 400 dmg to us mages, but if you pull them one at a time they are pretty easy. If you can go through Windurst Walls to get to Toraimarai Canal, do so. It will save some time and it's somewhat safer

BLM 75, BLM72 (me) and MNK74 trioed with little problems on the hinge oil.

Only problem was when we got 3 bats and I had to 2HR. The Oils themselves are easily duoable by 2 BLMs lvl 70+

KILL THEM BATS

There's a reason they suggest to kill the bats -- they aggro and link, and are really annoying. Since you have to have all of the hinge oils dead to enter the door, I recommend killing the bats and other linking pests before taking on the oils.

However, another word of warning, the hinge oils might not link, but they AGGRO. If your puller pulls one and runs by another, they'll both give chase, so be prepared for that.

However, this is one of THE easiest missions ever. I highly recommend doing the Rycharde quests in Mhaura and obtaining the map for Toraimarai Canal, it's very useful. Also, for more preperation, make sure you do Mission 3-2 and trade Kupipi in Heaven's Tower a Rolanberry to get the Portal Charm, allowing you to open the 3 mage gate in the Horutoto Ruins by yourself. Additionally, doing Blue Ribbon Blues and its prerequesites, as well as starting Toraimarai Turmoil for access to Toraimarai Canal from Windurst Walls makes this mission infinately easier.

One last tip. Kill the last oil as close to the door as you can manage, so you don't have to worry about respawn as you're trying to get in. Our alliance was going to kill them all by the door, but we got bat aggro and ended up clearing out the room instead. Our level range was 58-75, with the majority of us being between 60 and 69.

Just to point out something that this thread didn't tell me... this mission is really about speed. At 75 RDM, I can deal with the Hinge Oils easily. However, they pop like 10 minutes after being killed. Also, the bats in the area still aggro, so if that happens then you lose time dealing with the add.

For my attempt, when I was finally able to avoid the bats long enough for a straight shot at all 4 Oils, I was able to kill 3 Hinge Oils and start on the 4th before the first one popped again. If I had a ridiculous sword or I fought the 2nd one while leaving the first at 5% then killing both, then maybe it's soloable.

i soloed one of the hinge oils at lvl 62 bst using the bats in the area. each bat took about 1/4 of it's life before dying.
This is not as hard as people try to make it sound.

Yes, Fluid Spread hits hard. Yes, it can one-shot you if you don't buff appropiately. The alliance I was in had a few taru mages within AoE range and no one died. The only melee was I (thf). The rest were mages. Utsusemi absorbs it. Barwatera and stoneskin help reduce the damage. Other than that it's a slime with the usual high def and low mdef.

Just for the record, you can, in fact, stand back and NOT take aoe damage. All the mages in my alliance stood back, were nuking and healing, and never got hit with the slime aoe once.
