Preparing...
# Dec 31 2009 at 10:10 AM Rating: Decent
Before the crab spawns, I always prepare for the fight. Like eating a bird egg, then use protect/shell and then my Chariot Band. Lol.
Just wait!
# Nov 11 2007 at 8:40 PM Rating: Decent
Sit tight and wait a few when you trade the QUU. It can take a good minute or two for the crab to appear.
profit...8600? WOW!

I'm sorry, unless you are a total Newb with no other way to make Gil then this is a complete and utter waste of time!

For instance, if you are high enough to kill this thing solo (read Lvl 12+) then you are high enough to kill mad sheep. Take the sheep skin they drop and mix it with a Dark crystal, a windy tea leaf and a distilled water => Sheep Leather. This is a lvl 2 leathercraft recipe and rarely breaks. Therefore you have made 35K per stack of leather from about 3-5K worth of ingredients AND lvl'd up your craft too.

This should easily get you 35K an hour or more.

Happy hunting!

Theres no way you get that kind of money in one hour.

That is entirely inaccurate. It is a stupid mission to do over and over but the amount of gil those go for a stack depends on server. Gilgamesh they go for 8-12k a stack XD. But good luck hunting people

Yes, you can. However, if you're above level 12 or so, you can kill Bubbly Bernie quite easily over and over, saving yourself the money.

How much fame?
# Apr 25 2005 at 8:56 AM Rating: Decent
When I first started FFXI last january, a friend told me that Bubbly was a good way to make gil (Note: it was when I first started =P) Anyways~ I probably made about 20-30K on Bubbly, so I did the quest 40+ times, anyone know how much fame it gives~?
Not worth it (money wise)
# Apr 03 2005 at 11:20 PM Rating: Decent
Really, all you people out there looking for gil from this quest go somewhere else... For the time spent doing this its not worth it... There are easier ways to make money... Crystal farming for example..
Anyhoo.. If your in it for the fame, good luck to you... This takes alot of patience..
I hope this helped...

Edit: There is one time it would be good for making money... Only if your in a really really bad slump.

I took Bernie solo as a Level 9 Warrior using the sword skill Fast Blade at 300% TP and the Mighty Strikes 2-hour job ability. I survived with about 40 HP left.

i trued to use this quest as a means of source fo gil but i could never stay focused enough to get enough gil. i could only do about 20k worth of kills. theoretically you can do this and end up making 30k a day if youre high eough with warp. a drk lv 40+ would be preferable, when you can use warp twice. of course a blm sub would be necessary. you really cant put up withthis quest for longer than that

How do you get the clock multiple times? I have done this quest twice in a row and the second time didn't receive the clock. The only way to get the clock again is to take it to Malene and go back after him again.
RE: Problem
# Jul 19 2004 at 1:26 AM Rating: Decent
The clock is rare, so you can only hold one in your inventory at a time, otherwise people would jsut have stacks of Quus and sit there and kill him over and over again, until they have 30 steam clocks.

I did this quest 24 times in one sitting, and got a profit of 9400 gil. Would I do it again? I would rather kill to weak to be worthwiles for the rare crystals. Unless you have flee/warp, prepare to see Final Fantasy XI at the hight of tedium.
Quus
# Jun 16 2004 at 5:23 PM Rating: Decent
Just go buy the Stack of 12. You can also set up a Mule in Windy and buy quus from the many fishers that are right outside the Fisher Guild in Port Windy.

I'm just wondering if you have done it close to 20-30 times what is ur fame...and where is like a place where I could CALCULATE...not check...my fame..
How You Did It ..

Now that brings to mind. Theoretically, a party of 5 could make 36000 gil in one sitting, where a sitting could consist of 360 kills.

The ideal party (5 PCs) would consist of a very high level PC who is wearing no armor and no weapons, their inventory is absolutely free of nothing but quus (12-stacks) for a total of 360 quus. This PC would be the puller/slave who does nothing but pulls and kills Bernie, and as mentiond is a high level PC who can withstand attacks from Bernie without suffering any damage for not wearing armor.

One PC would camp the gate, two PCs as runners (A1 and A2) between the gate and AH, and two PCs as runners (B1 and B2) between MH and Malene. The PC camping the gate and the two runners between AH and the gate doesn't matter as far as job goes. But ... the two PC's running between MH and Malene would best be suited to the BLM who have learned the Warp spell and have their HP set at the MH in Bastok Markets (closes to Malene).

Ideally, camper would hand a clock off to runner A1 who runs to AH and delivers clock to B1. While A1 is running to AH, A2 is on his way back to the gate (or already at the gate). camper then hands a clock off to runner B1 who runs to AH and delivers clock to B2.

Once A1 delivers the clock to B1, B1 removes it from the delivery box and runs to Malene. In the meantime, B2 has already delivered his clock to Malene and has warped back to MH and entering by the time A2 has delevered the clock.

Slave would have to be sufficiently high in level to whack bernie in one blow, and set up a macro to select the clock in the treasury and pass on it so that camper can lot and take the clock, run in and pass it off to A1 and A2.

To be even more efficient, add one more member to the PT who does nothing but drop quus while the slave does nothing but whack. But then youd have to divide it between 6 (360quus X 500ea = 180,000gil / 6PC = 30,000gil per PC), where with five you'd be making 36,000 gil each.

Now the question is, how long would 360 whacks take, and how much running (non-stop) would the runners A1/A2 and B1/B2 be doing?

Something to ponder over ...

How we did it
# Jun 05 2004 at 6:14 AM Rating: Default
A way that we had set it up to collect clocks is a 3 person group:
The first person kills bernie, that is thier entire job.

The second person will start standing in S. Gustaberg right outside the zone in to Bastok Mines. After a Bernie kill they will lot for the steam clock, obtain it, and run into the AH. There they will send it to the 3rd person.

The third person will go from their MH in the Markets region and do the turn in.

It didn't take entirely too long to do, maybe 2 hours or so it went. We each made 12,000 gil.

Random Spawns

Sometimes Bubbly Bernie does a random spawn.

So, as a courtesy, if there are other PC's in the area, I do this:

I initiate a trade with the three ??? at the bush. With the Quus ready to trade, my mouse over the OK, I type:

/say I'm pulling Bernie, please do not kill him

So far everyone in the area moves out of the way so I can kill him. Once I've completed the kill, I politely turn around and say:

/say Thanks, I'm finished ...

Or something of that nature.

I have come up to a line of PC's waiting at the bush to which everyone was polite enough to say who was next. When another PC approached I just did a /say to let them know I was next in line for Bernie.

Politeness will get you what you want when you need it and at the right time.

Farming Clocks

I know you all have heard this before, perhaps a hundred times or more ... but ...

To farm the clocks, you need to go to your MH (Moog House) to make sure your delivery box is empty. You need have plenty of Quus. I usually purchase them in 12-pack stacks. And lastly, and this is for the new players, you can only carry ONE clock at a time. If you have a clock on you and you kill Bernie, you will not get another clock until you get rid of the one on you. Same goes for carrying the clocks between MH and Malene, only ONE clock on your person at any given time.

Here goes:

1) Go to the lighthouse, trade a Quus to the ???, fight Bernie, get the Clock.
2) Run immediately to Gawful at AH and deposit the clock in the delivery box to yourself then return immediately to the lighthouse.
3) Repeat steps 1-2 till your delivery box is full.
4) Once the delivery box is full run immediately to your MH and open the delivery box but DO NOT take anything out of it ... just open it. Leave MH and go back to the lighthouse and repeat steps 1-2 till your delivery box is full (again).
5) Return to the lighthouse for one more Bernie kill. The clock you get from him you will carry as your delivery box is full.

This method will put 16 clocks in your delivery box, and the one you're carrying will make 17.

6) Run to Malene (Bastok Markets I-5) with the clock, listen to her story then trade her the clock for 500 gil.
7) Run to your MH, get a clock from your delivery box and repeat steps 6-7 till your delivery box is empty.

You will come out of this time consuming process with 8500 gil.

I've found that when doing this run solo, it takes approximately 1 earth hour to collect 8 clocks. That's just the collection process.

If you have one other PC you can party with, one can camp at Bastok Mines exit to South Gustaberg while one camps the lighthouse. The one at the lighthouse kills Bernie 17 times while the one at the exit takes the clocks to his delivery box. Once the box is full (16 clocks), they switch positions so the second person can fill his delivery box ... carries the 17th clock to start his fill. This means the second person has to kill Bernie 18 times to give the camper at the gate a 17th clock, and a 17th clock for the one left at the lighthouse.

There is also another method for trading the clocks that removes a bit of the boredom factor from all the running between Malene's place and the MH, but only for a 2-party run. Here I will refer to them as member A and member B of the party.

A takes his 17th clock to Malene, cashes it in, runs to the Zone point (in front of portal to Bastok Port) and zones (portal to Bastok Port, then turn around and reenter Bastok Markets), by this time B should be at the Zone point. When A returns, B trades A his clock. Once the trade is complete B returns to his MH to get another clock while A returns to Malene to cash in the clock.

A then zones, B is waiting at Zone point, A returns, B trades A a clock, B runs back to MH for another, A returns to Malene to trade ... A then zones, B is waiting at Zone ...

Once B has taken his last clock from his delivery box, rather than trade A this clock A and B swap positions, B takes the clock to Malene, listens to her story and trades her the clock and the entire process repeats until A has traded ALL the clocks in A's delivery box to B.

Why ALL the clocks? When the process began, B traded A his 17th clock ... if A did not give B ALL the clocks, B would be short one clock and A would have 500 gil more than B.

Lastly, if the Quus do sell for 1k a stack, spend your first 8500 on 8 12-pack stacks. This will give you a potential of 48,000 gil provided you don't mind all the time put into the work to get the gil.

Hope this doesn't sound as boring as it looks.

If your checking delivery box for items you mail to yourself you can take advantage of the "infinite inventory" trick, instead of leaving the items in the delivery box return them to the sender and send them to the bottom of the inbox list. This trick works esp well when crafting items with no room in AH or inventory.
imo this seems like too much work to go through for 500 gils.

My friend (20BLM/10WHM) keeps chattering about how easy this quest is, and yet how profitable it is. I see why now.

Quus is 1k a stack in Bastok AH on Lakshmi, two runs from Bernie pays for that.

8 does seems a little low, since it's listed as a 9-10 NM in most other places I've seen, and NM hit harder then their normal equivalents anyway.

I'd say 15 just to be safe. But then again, I'm a thief. Little def + little hp = Tough battles. ><;

# Feb 09 2004 at 7:08 PM Rating: Default
I used a fishing rod for catching small fish (carbon or glass rods are recommended) and use the sibiki rig or lugworms to catch the quus. If your fishing lvl is low you run the higher chance that the rod will break, so keep that in mind especially with the choice of using bait or lures.

Let me clear some things up...
This quest is repeatable. You dont need to talk to Dalzaak or whatever.. I never even seen the guy. Trade Quus to the ??? to lure out Bernie and then run to Melanie and talk to her, trade the clock, and recieve 500 gil..
Do this as many times as you want, if your short on change its nice, Quus can aslo be bought for 900-1000 a stack in the AH.
