Mission Orders

Assist the Aurastery's School of Magic in the selection of the venue for their next skills test. They want to record the number of monsters you can hunt at a specific area, in a set number of days, to fairly standardize their skills test.

Walkthrough

If you donate 4 stacks of crystals to a gate guard you can skip this mission.

After talking to the gate guard head to the Aurastery and talk to Moreno-Toeno. The Minster wants to test his students in Tahrongi Canyon, but he needs a benchmark by which to compare his students to adventurers such as yourself. You are to directed to Tahrongi Canyon to exterminate as many monsters as you can in 1 hour. This is a TIMED mission and you have to be quick getting there. Warp or a Scroll: Instant Warp is a good idea to have.

Try to exterminate 30+ monsters in less then a hour AND make your way back to the Aurastery. This is a cumulative mission - so more the merrier! In other words, having more people CANNOT hurt your chances in finishing this quest on time. When you are finished, go back to Moreno-Toeno to complete the mission.

The following are transcripts and videos from the mission A Testing Time.

this one isnt just a one time thing like other mission. first time its in Tahrongi Canyon next in Buburimu Peninsula. in order to do the next missions you need a high enough level

Mission Complete!
# Aug 08 2006 at 9:33 PM Rating: Decent
Just did this on Shiva.

18MNK/9WAR

Warped from Waters to Woods.
Ran to the Canyon.
Killed 39 Monsters.
Ran back to Woods
Warped to Waters.
Still had about 1:45 Vana'diel time left.
Waited til 1 hour left and talked to NPC again.

There were a few characters leveling there too, so I didn't have all the mobs to myself.

Super easy mission. Obviously Starting Level is incorrect.

Figured out a problem!
# May 29 2006 at 8:18 PM Rating: Decent
Ok i figured out the problem that lots of ppl have. When u go to the guy and he says some wierd rhyme in giberish and random numbers that don't make sense. It means that u have too much time left for him to take the doll back. HE WILL ONLY TAKE THE DOLL WHEN THERE IS 1 VANADIEL HOUR LEFT OR LESS!
Figured out a problem!
# Jun 19 2012 at 1:32 AM Rating: Decent
The numbers aren't random; notice that he says 23:01, meaning you need to spend that much time before he will take the doll back.
This mission is f'd up for me...
# May 29 2006 at 3:41 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, this was really messed up when i tried it.

The first time i got back 1 minute late and obviosly he said i went over so i did it again.

The second time i counted on a piece of paper and i killed 45 monsters. i still had about 12 minutes left when i got back to the aurestry and the same thing happened to me that happened to MTR but i was solo'ing. He said some rhyme ending in 22, then i talked to him again and he said a rhyme ending in 23, then again and a rhyme ending in 0, and finally a rhyme ending in 1, then i tried again and he said i took too long because the time ran out.

I already spent 2 hours tring this bullshi* mission so can somebody tell me what im doing wrong before i waste another hour doing nothing.

p.s. I played as 21war/10mnk i used the guy to warp to choco stables, rode up there. Killed all easy prey/too weak to be worthwhiles arong the crag of mea, then rode back on choco that i got from the guy right next to the crag.
It is repeatable
# Mar 22 2006 at 10:58 AM Rating: Decent
The Testing Time mission IS repeatable, however, you can chose not to do it again and instead, give crystals to the gate guard. (Wich is a better idea IMO).

I accidentaly started the mission again: is there a way to like... abandon the mission instead of doing it another time?
I'm sorry..
# Feb 03 2006 at 2:48 PM Rating: Decent
I'm sorry for the second post, but I should mention that when I went back to the gate guard, she not only gave me the mission again, but when I went back to the aurastery the Taru that sent me to the canyon and penninsula sent me back to the canyon again.
Hmmm...?
# Feb 03 2006 at 2:42 PM Rating: Decent
Yeah so, I'm sorry if this issue has already been addressed, but I need to ask .... I went to Tahrongi Canyon and Buburimu Penninsula and killed 87 in the first one and 65 on the second one. However I keep going back to the gate guard (after I've gone to the aurastery after I'm done) and the mission keeps appearing. The mission is in my 'completed missions' section, but again, I've already done the 2 parts of the mission. Noob question: is the mission Repeatable? if so why? and if not then what am I doing wrong? Also i'm now rank 4, and the rank 4 mission isn't appearing from the gate guard, I think the mission is called Magicite. There's another mission there besides "A Testing Time" -- but no Magicite, which is why I'm trying to get this one done. Help!!
Easy
# Dec 20 2005 at 7:55 AM Rating: Decent
I did this as a 22RDM/10WHM. I had no choco and no warp. Got the mission, took the warp to the choco stables and ran on foot there. Took me 10 min from the time I got the quest until I killed my first mob in the Canyon. Killed everything in sight with my sword and didn't cast spells. When I was running low on HP, I just CureII'd myself and kept going. Headed back about 40 minutes after I got there and arrived early. Killed 48 mobs. This was a piece of cake.
You don't have to have the warp and all that if you don't want it. My HP is Jeuno and I can't really change that at this level. It's hard to get there without either an escort or prism powder and sneak. Anyone can do this.
Easy
# Jul 09 2006 at 1:51 PM Rating: Decent
Except that at your level, you can ride chocobo back to Jeuno and not have to run. ^^

I went to do this as my blm, i forgot what level i was, but this was cake, i got 46 kills. I took a few stacks of pebbles i mined, chucked them at everything i saw, then cast my GA spells. really easy.
low lv solo
# Feb 22 2005 at 9:36 PM Rating: Decent
this can be done w/ a level 15smn/7rdm. the biggest thing is prep work. make sure you have a scroll of instant warp, and your HP set in windywaters. as soon as you have the mission started, run to the teleporter next to Optistery. He'll send you right outside the chocobo stables. Run in and get a bird. since you're below lv 20, they'll say the riding time is reduced, but your only going to the cayon, so it doesn't matter. as soon as you get to your first target, jump off the bird and sic carbie on him, let them fight as you fight another target. If carbie is near you, have him heal you instead of curing yourself, it saves mp, which means carbie fights longer. I worked up and down the right side of the pass, and had to recover mp 4 times, but got a total of 37 kills. and that was w/o refresh drinks. But it is possible w/o a party and below level 20
?

Point of the mission
# Dec 03 2004 at 3:22 AM Rating: Decent
The point of this mission is to build up your rank points without turning in crystals. You can repeat it as many times as you want. You kill stuff either in Tahrongi for 1 Vana'diel day or in Buburimu for 2 Vana'diel days.

If you don't want to spend the time on this just get the crystals and skip it.
this dont work...
# Oct 26 2004 at 4:54 PM Rating: Default
We are pt of 3, kill 78 mobs. But when we back he say only kill 22 :!!!
We talk again (after 1 minut) and he say we kill 23:?¿
We disband pt, talk again and he said we kill 0 :!!!!
We make pt again, talk again (after 10 seconds...) and he say we kill 1 :?¿

Are you sure this mision work well....

Does this mission advance the storyline?
# Oct 20 2004 at 9:58 AM Rating: Decent
Does this mission advance the storyline in any way, or reveal anything interesting (however minor) about the world of Vana'diel? If so, I'll consider accepting the mission. Otherwise, I'ma skip it...

In general, I don't like the idea of skipping game content just to gain levels or rank faster, but this mission just sounds like a big waste of time. :-)

It only takes a little longer than one hour to do. Speed through it. I'm sure it has story line to it in some way. I'm like you though. I can't skip anything so i am gonna do it.
How Rank 2 Mission 2.2 went for me
# Oct 19 2004 at 1:43 AM Rating: Decent
I did this mission solo with my BLM/WHM decked out in Seer's gear plus other great pieces of armor ;) Got back to windy and found out that, from the 100's of Firaga's/Blizzaga's/Thundaga's/... , I was able to kill 167 monsters. The NPC was Quite Impressed.

Summary: Make insane monster trains with good buffs (especially Aquaveil) and armor on, -STOP-....hammertime! jk, -aga the shizzel out of them. Worked for me and wasnt hard at all.

I jsut realized after me and my party killed over 50 monsters and I had gone back to Windurst that the low number he kept giving wasn't the monster count it was the time in game.

I tried this mission as a 23 mnk/war.

Hp'd in WWoods, went to WWaters to get the doll.
Got a scroll of instant warp, and chocobo'd to the Canyon.

Got back to WWaters with about an hour or so left. Killed 82. Majority of them were the Too Weak variety.
