Summary

All fishermen dream of hooking the big one. Catch him and obtain the treasure in his belly.

Walkthrough

Note: You must be level 50 and have completed the quest Sharpening the Sword - PLD AF1 before you can get this quest.

After getting the quest from Ailbeche, go talk to Ailbeche's father, Exoroche. He is in weapons shop in South San d'Oria. Then go back to Ailbeche and talk to him again. He wants you to get a giant shell bug from Crawler's Nest.

The NM crawler Dreadbug can be found around (H-9) by talking to ???. After you kill Dreadbug you'll obtain 2-3 giant shell bugs. You should keep them all or at least 2 since you might lose the catch when you try to fish.

(Note: You can skip the above part if you have enough gil and if the item is available at the Auction House.)

After you get item, you must go back to Ailbeche and trade him the bait. If you don't and you don't have bait anymore after the fish fight, you have to get the bait again in order to get the quest going. So make sure you trade the bait with Ailbeche after you get it.

After that he'll tell you you can catch a big one in Castle Oztroja. Find the pond where there are Oozes roaming around at (H-9). You should clear the area because they will aggro when you're fighting. They are good for building up TP.

Fishing skill level doesn't matter. Any rod that is designed for big fishes should be okay. Equip the Giant Shell Bug, along with rod, and fish in the pond until you pull up Odontotyrannus. A full PT of level 55 should suffice.

After the fight, the fish will drop Odontotyrannus. Take the item and go back to Ailbeche and trade with him. He'll then tell you to go to Selbina to cut open its belly and obtain the treasure. In Selbina trade the item with Zaldon at the Fishing Guild. He'll give you key item A Knight's Boots. Now go back to North San d'Oria, enter Chateau d'Oraguille and go to Prince Trion's room. He'll then reward you with the Gallant Leggings.

Only hit me for like 40-55 dmg every hit. Was
really weird. Well anyway, my friend and I went to Oztraja and killed the fish no problem. Was fairly easy. Whole quest took about an hour and a half. ^^ Me (lvl 52 pld) Friend (lvl 69 pld)

I just did the boots over the weekend, started Friday the 5th ended Sunday the 7th. Did the Dreadbug with Dub (the 61DRG I've mentioned in other posts) and another 50PLD that needed the dreadbug. We fought it once, got one bug -.- the other PLD lotted higher (and we both wanted 2) so Dub said it was cool to fight it again. Thankfully the other PLD was with us and had the quest started, he was able to pop dreadbug right away, in mid battle a 70DRG ran by and asked if we wanted help, we invited him and the battle was over so fast it wasn't even funny. This time he dropped he dropped two bugs, the PLD passed the first so we would both have one, then we lotted the second, I won. DRG had to leave for a static pt so we accepted our winnings and left.

Spent friday night, saturday, and sunday morning shouting on and off for help (as in a party or otherwise) with odontotyrannus, no response at all (people in Jeuno need to grow a sense of charity lol). Sunday morning, I asked a 67BLM and 75SAM friends of mine but both were busy (which was fine, high levels have a life outside of helping lower levels). Just when I was about to give up shouting and go to Fei'Yin to get a life belt with my chest key, the SAM sends me a tell saying he wants to take a break from what he's doing and he'll help me out.

We get to Oztroja, 2 rooms before the lake, my mom picks up the phone and lag/dc'ed me >.< I get back on and my connection just sucks after that, I lag/dc two more times. I finally get back on and secure my connection and he tells me that I missed a chest key (he had to drop it because he had on in his MH) so I was like "dammit...that's gay". We clear the room of yags and ooze. There are 2 yags left but he tells me they're too far away to worry about, I don't want to leave things to chance so he kills one of them, it drops a key... :D, chest right near the lake....double :D 4.5k gil, not bad. We kill the other yag, another key drops...it was my day for sure. I go fish up the fish, we kill it easily (a 75SAM/37NIN can really own the thing o_O).

Afterwards we head out to Eldieme Necropolis to get my coffer key, but I'll post that part in the AF gloves thread. After the Necropolis, I head back to Jeuno to activate the dark spark part of the gloves, I head out to Sandy and finish the boots, no clue what that Under Oath quest is but it says to start in South Sandy so I'm gonna talk to every NPC there XD if I find anything out, I'll post it up.

we went with 50pld, 51pld, 51nin, 51drk and 51rdm. We cleared the room and the 51pld fished the fish and we killed it rather easily. Then we cleared the jelly again and the 51pld fished it again. This time we had trouble becaue the Anitcans aggroed, so the 51pld took the agro and was fighting the anticans while we finished off the fish. The nin died and the 51pld died. All in all it was a successful trip, both got what we needed. Not sure if only a pld can fish it, but I didn't have to fish it and i got the drop. Just be sure to clear the room of all possible links.

Ok did this yesterday no probs apart from originally we picked the wrong pond.
The pond required is NOT on the 3rd floor(this one is surrounded by leeches). The one needed is actually reachable from the second flood and in the center of the map.
Dont make that mistake you'll fishing for ages asking why the hell wont it spawn.
The NM is a joke however took us about 45 secs to kill. pld(53-me)pld(62)whm(70)rdm(65)blm(62)thf(60)we owned him

My brother was trying to get this with a party containing 3 plds. The same guy fished every time, and he caught it after a few trys 2 times. The third time he tried, he actually LOST HIS CATCH! His bait was gone, so my brother got screwed. He said he's quitting FFXI because of it.

I just wanted to add my 2gil on these AF boots for PLD. I just completed this AF quest and I might add it is easy as long as you have at least 2 60+ high levels. In my party that defeated the pugil NM we had a 50 PLD (me), 55 WHM, 58 DRK, 62 RDM, and 70 RDM. The poor NM went down in 15 secs.

Good luck everyone.

catching the fish took longer than fighting the fish.

Helped a PLD last night. PT makeup: 50PLD, 55BLM, 55MNK(me), 60PLD

60PLD opened with Vorpal Blade. Then Red Lotus->Raging Fists for Fusion (about 1000+ total dmg) with a Firaga2 MB (500+dmg). It was basically dead after that. I wasn't able to get another WS off before it died.

Did this again for another PLD in the LS.

Heres the setup:

The BLM just nuked the thing as soon as I 2hr'ed. It was over in no time.

When I did this quest there were 4 paladins going for the item so we had to kill the NM 4 times ^^; Our party was a 64 PLD, 54 BLM and 4 PLD's lv.52-56 We owned him easily.

1. Makes sure you get the giant shell bug from the NM in the Crawler's Nest or you can just buy it from the AH. You will only need ONE.

2. Make sure to bring a fishing rod (yes one of the paladins forgot his rod.)

3. Fishing skill has no effect, mine was lv.1 (hehe) and I caught it on the second try. You won't loose your bait, you'll just get the all famous "You didn't catch anything message."

Hope this helps.

PLD 52, PLD 54, DRK 55, WHM 55, THF 47, MNK 52

We destroyed that fish. Leggings look sweet!

BTW: I used SH Rod with NO fishing skill. I never lost the bug either.

Did this a few hours ago. I had a 74 THF with me and she tore everything up. I have a fishing skill of 18 and fished it up in my first try. (I guess I didn't need to buy a few bugs) All I really had to do was throw a couple cureIIIs her way and she was good. She pwned it like no one's business. After that we were leaving and I guess I got aggroed by a yagudo and didn't know it. I turned around and about 10 of them linked and was chasing me. I died, she fled but I still got the item so i didn't care.

A full walkthrough, from personal experience and culled from previous posts.

Requirements: A paladin of level 50 or more who has already completed the paladin AF1.

1) Talk to Ailbeche (J-9 in North San d'Oria) and he talks about how he wants to fish up "the big one" but has never been able to, or even acquire the bait to so do.
2) Go talk with Ailbeche's father Exorache in the weapon shop in South San d'Oria (K-7), who once again dismisses his son's interests.
3) Talk to Ailbeche again, and he'll request that you get him a 'giant shell bug', the bait he needs to go with his friend to fish up the big one. This is a standard bait item, which means you can purchase it in the Auction Hall under Weapons/Ammo & Misc/Fishing; if you do this, skip to step 6. You can also go get it for yourself by killing the Dreadbug in Crawler's Nest.
4) If you go to Crawler's Nest to obtain the giant shell bug, go into the nest and head into the center section and then north at the top of I-9 on the first map. This will take you onto the second map, the one with the other exit to Rolanberry Fields. If you look on this map you will see a small southern niche that you want to go to at H-9. There are numerous Witch Hazels around the niche, so either clear them first or be very careful not to get an add while fighting the Dreadbug.
5) Once you make it to the niche, face west and you'll see a ??? that spawns the Dreadbug when selected. The Dreadbug is basically an overgrown Soldier Crawler, with about 40% more hitpoints and damage than a Soldier in Crawler's Nest. Be sure to take along a bard or red mage to dispel the Cocoon it will inevitably spin on itself, or melee high enough level (55+) who can do damage through it. Once you kill the Dreadbug, it will drop 1-3 copies of the needed shell bug. Take one and head back to San d'Oria. Note that there is a restriction on how often the Dreadbug can be spawned of at least once per game day.
6) Trade the giant shell bug to Ailbeche. He'll be impressed, but doesn't take the shell bug, saying that he'll never be able to get the big one himself. Instead, he tells you how to do it: go to Castle Oztroja and fish it up, then defeat it. (If he hadn't told you previously to go get him the shell bug, go talk to his father first and then come back and trade the shell bug to Ailbeche, and he will proceed with the quest.) He notes that, "fishing is all about patience" which is certainly true when you go to find it.
7) Head next to Castle Oztroja, off the Meriphataud Mountains. Make sure you have the map for Oztroja prior to going; it can be purchased in Windurst. There are many places in Oztroja where you can fish, but only one of them will bring up the specific fish you're looking for. Depending on your level, you will either need invis to get past the Yagudo that will eventually aggro you (recommended), or you can fight through them. To get to the pool with the fish, go on the first map to the map exit at J-8, through the door and on to the second map. On the second map, head northwest to the map exit at G-7. On the tiny third map, go due north through the map exit at I-7. This will take you to the forth map, which has the pool with the big one. Walk along the western side of the map and make your way into the center section at H-8. Here you will find a pool with a few ooze inside it, and various Yagudo wandering around. Clear the Yagudo nearby (all easy prey at level 52), making sure to build up TP for the big fight.
8) Once you're ready, get out your fishing pole, equip the giant shell bug, and go to work in the pool. Some points of note about fishing:
* It doesn't matter who does the fishing, you or someone else in the group. The pugil gets aggressive very quickly on whoever pulls it up, though, so be careful with letting an easily killed mage go fishing.
* You can fish it up with absolutely no skill in fishing, but it may take a while. Watch the respawn on the Yagudo if it goes over 8 minutes; pulling up the big one right after a Yagudo has spawned nearby is a sure recipie for disaster.
* The fishing rod used doesn't matter: the only thing to fish up in this pond is the fish you want, and it won't break a rod.
* The number of times you have to fish before you land it can vary from 3 to over 20.
9) Once you fish up "the big one", you get to kill it, a monster pugil named Odontotyrannus. It has about 2500 hitpoints, and hits a level 55 paladin for between 50-120 per hit, with occasional Screwdrivers that can top 500, so having multiple healers helps. It can be paralyzed/slowed if you have high enough level casters along to land such spells. Make sure you have a bard/red mage along for dispels, as the water shield used by the pugil will make hitting it with physical damage a nearly impossible proposition for any melee below level 58. Keep the water shield dispelled, toss off a solid skillchain or two, and it goes down quickly.
10) After killing Odontotyrannus, it turns into a rare/ex item of the same name, which you take back to San d'Oria. Trade it to Ailbeche, and he tells you to go get it cleaned by an expert fisherman in Selbina. You'll find such an expert in Zaldon at H-9 at the Fisherman's Guild in Selbina. When you trade him the fish he cleans it and finds a pair of Knight's Boots inside. Once you have this keyitem, head back to San d'Oria once more.
11) Go talk with Exorache in the South San d'Oria weapon shop again and he discusses the strange find inside of such a fish, saying that, "I will convey this to Prince Trion."
12) Head into the Chateau d'Oraguille from Northern San d'Oria and go to H-7 in the gardens, where you will find the door to the Prince Royal's Room. Select the door for a cutscene with Prince Trion, where he gives you a tale of intrigue and your own shiny new set of leggings!

One thing to note here: if you don't acknowledge that you've fished something up in the allotted time you will lose your giant shell bug bait and not fish up the monster. It happened to me today while waiting for a white mage with a penchant for disconnects to get back in the party.

Otherwise this post should probably be the actual write up for this particular quest. Good stuff here.

So finished the quest last night. The pond is right near the Magicite as listed in walkthrough. Both myself and the WHM in the party tried to fish it up b/c I have about a 3 fishing, and she is at about 49. She caught it on the 1st try.**Note: The NM hits whomever fishes it up so don't fish at same time** Our whm got taken down to the red with 1 hit, but fortunately my rod was away and I was able to voke before he could hit again. You definately need to clear the area first. Once you hit the room destroy anything in there, and try not to burn mana b/c the pugil although not crazy hard for a party of 50's is quite a challenge.

Very Important, please note this. I attempted this quest with 52 PLD (me), 72 RDM, 50 RDM, 69 WHM, 51 MNK. I told the the position of the lask as listed here and wouldn't you know it, there are 2 lakes at the same position on 2 different levels.
I fished the wrong lake for almost 2 hours...
I was so mad when a level 72 PLD ran by and said go down towards the magicite...
Anywho I fished at the CORRECT pond for another hour and still got nothing.
FISHING SKILL 0
I figured I just needed a fishing skill so I was the first to opt out of the quest to go raise my fishing.

Then a level 69 PLD in my LS asked me if I still needed help... and told me I didn't need any Fishing skill. I reluctantly went back with him and his buddy, a level 69 DRK. I fished the NM up on the 3rd try and the battle looked somthing like this.

PLD Provokes <t>
PLD Flashes <t>
PLD uses Sentinel
PLD uses Shield Bash
PLD Provokes <t>
DRK hits <t> for 4xx dmg
DRK Hits <t> for 5xx dmg
DRK Uses Berserk.
DRK uses Last Resort.
DRK uses Soul Eater.
Ryunoire casts Cure3 on PLD.
DRK uses WS (don't recall which)
Critical hit <t> takes 23xx points of damage!
DRK defeats the <t>
PLD looks at DRK and sighs dejectedly.
Ryunoire looks at DRK and staggers.
Ryunoire cheers DRK on!
Ryunoire cheers PLD on!
Ryunoire kneels respectfully.

Gee whiz ma, I shoulda been a DRK!
<J/K I LOVE beging a Pally!>

Anyways, this quest ended up being alot harder and more annoying than it should have been, so learn from my mistake and READ CAREFULLY! ^^
