Analysis

Introduced as part of the Chains of Promathia expansion, Limbus provided a new endgame activity, to the world of Vana'diel, providing characters with something other than Dynamis to do in endgame.

Limbus is a series of battles focused around smaller groups of people, specifically no more than 18, completing a task within a shorter time frame than Dynamis.

Unlike Dynamis, Limbus is set within two specific zones of Vana'diel, Apollyon and Temenos.
These zones are sub-divided into separate areas, some of which must be cleared at first, in order to gain access to further parts of each respective zone.
The central zones, once accessed, play host to fights against massive biotechnological weapons, Proto-Ultima and Proto-Omega.

Participation

Number of Participants

No more than 18 people, a single Alliance, can function as a unit within Limbus at a time.

Primary Requirements

Each character must access to, or have completed CoP Mission 8-1.
Chains of Promathia must be installed.

Once the above requirement is met, characters must each purchase a Cosmo-Cleanse from Sagheera in Port Jeuno.

Then enter Al'Taieu via any of the Teleport Spires (Dem, Mea or Holla).

Once a specific section of Al'Taieu has been entered, Aw'euvhi-type monsters need to be defeated, as they provide the Key Cards for entrance into Limbus.
Alliance members who are present in the zone, dead or alive, when an Aw'euvhi is slain, will receive the Key Card.

After all characters attending the run possess both Key Items, enter the Limbus zone that the alliance has chosen.

Apollyon

Examine the Sentinel Column to check that the desired area is available to enter.
If the area is available, apply buffs and examine the Swirling Vortex and select a zone from the list provided.
Also, you may trade appropriate chip(s) to the Swirling Vortex to enter a higher floor of the corresponding Apollyon zone. (see table below.)
Everyone within the alliance then receives the message "You hear a faint hum."
Check the Swirling Vortex to enter Limbus, making sure not to engage in battle before everyone has entered the battleground.
Once a monster within Limbus is engaged, entrance to the current battlefield will be disabled.
All characters lose both Key Items upon entry into Limbus.

All alliance members when the "hum" starts will not be able to enter a different area of Apollyon until the hum stops, or when the alliance is done with the area that was picked.
If the alliance wishes to tackle two areas at the same time, with one alliance, form the alliance after entering both areas.
Once everyone is inside the zone, the alliance is free to engage monsters.

Rules of Limbus

Chests: There are three types of Treasure Chests in Limbus, blue (see Time Limit), brown with silver fixtures (heal all HP/MP, and restore Job Abilities), and brown with gold fixtures (see Treasure).

Chip trading: All chips traded in order to enter a specific zone, must be traded by the character reserving the zone.

Entrance/Re-entrance: Upon entering Limbus, all appropriate key items are lost, and any chips used to enter, become useless.
Re-entry is therefore not possible.
Entrance to Limbus is also restricted to no more than one visit every 72 hours, like Dynamis.

Experience Points:

  • Experience Points are lost upon death.
  • Experience Points are not earned from killing Limbus denizens.

Time Limit: Each of the zones has a starting time limit, like Dynamis, as follows;

These time limits can be extended whilst within Limbus, by opening blue treasure chests. (5-15 minutes per chest)

Treasure

Treasure items are rewarded in Limbus in three forms, that found in brown and gold chests within Limbus, and items that drop from the two biotechnological Weapon bosses, Proto-Omega and Proto-Ultima.
All three types of treasure are redeemed by trading them to NPC's elsewhere in Vana'diel in return for powerful armor pieces.

Ancient Beastcoins are traded to Sagheera in Port Jeuno in exchange for accessory items for the Back, Neck and Earring slots.
They can also be used as payment for the crafting of Artifact+1 armor

Items found in chests are traded along with pieces of Artifact armor, and the abovementioned fee in Ancient Beastcoins to achieve this goal.

Proto-weapon drops are traded to Wilhelm, in Mhaura, to obtain pieces of Homam and Nashira armor.
For more information on these, see Limbus Armor Sets.
