Summary

The Rhinostery has developed a new "mini" tuning fork of fire. Ringing it upon the protocrystal in Ifrit's Cauldron will open the path to a one-on-one battle with the beast that awaits inside. However, only summoners are allowed to take up this challenge.

Walkthrough

Things to remember:

  • This is a solo battle.
  • There is a level 20 cap on this battle.
  • There is a 15-minute time limit.
  • You can only use Carbuncle.

Speak to Dodmos at (J-9) in Kazham, standing next to Ronta-Onta. You must have at least level 3 fame in Kazham before he will allow you to do this quest. If you meet the requirements, he will present you with a Mini Tuning Fork of Fire.

  • This is not a key item, like the Tuning Fork of Fire, and therefore requires a space in your inventory.

When you have made your preparations, trade the Mini Tuning Fork of Fire back to Dodmos. He won't keep it. Trading him the Mini Tuning Fork of Fire will warp you directly to the Cloister of Flames for the fight.

Try to fight Ifrit on Watersday and do not fight him on Firesday

Upon defeating him, you will receive the ability to summon Ifrit to your side.

Avatar Solo FIght Guide (Trial SIze by Quest)
# Nov 05 2008 at 8:57 AM Rating: Decent
Hello! Ok i am on Pazaru on Siren Server here is my way for beating the Avatars im 6/6 on the level 20 Trial size Quest. To be a respectable summoner you should get all the avatars, with the exception of Fenrir and Diablos u will need a party of 70+ for these. also for Diablos to complete COP missions. All thanks go to the ForsakenKnights LS which has helped me along the way. Thank You!

1. Armor
-ok armor is important, the main Items you want are a Hermits Wand, lvl 13 -25% spell inturuption down (around 3k in AH) then a heko Obi +1, giving -8% spell inturuption (ive seen anywhere from 2-5k) then the highest level armor for level 20. I ussed the barons set with light soleas (+3 eva) and scentless armletts (+5 eva) then 2 energy earings and my windurstian ring.

2. Prep
-For each fight you will need 1-2 Yagado drinks (1-2k) i suggest bringing 3incase of emergency, 3 hi-potions (1k) bring more if u need, and 3 ethers (1-2k) note that Hi-Ethers are less expensive and give more MP but take alot longer to use so i suggest ethers. For every battle Buffs help ALOT! For my first battle Titan i Had a 75 whm give me Protect & Shell V, and Barstone that gave me +86 earth. Titan only hit me for around 12 dmg w/ special effect.

3. Days
the calendar goes: Firesday>Earthsday>Watersday>Windsday>Iceday>Lightningday>Lightday>Darksday>
fighting the avatars on days they are weak will help but is not completely neccisary. i fought Ifrit on Windsday and killed him in 4min 20sec. Note on Lightsday your Carbuncel Searing Light JA will always hit for full. NEVER fight on the the Avatars day it will own you. example Leviathan on Watersday bad idea

4. FIghting the Avatars
Ok the way i did it worked for me was get the buffs imediatly trade the mini fork to the Taru's assistant you will then be warped to the Protocrystal, u then trade the Minifork to the Crystal (IMPORTANT) if you just clikc on it u will be fighting the high lvl one and loss. then Run about halfway to the avatar to the 90% bend in the path. Stop there and use your yagado drink. then you will summon carbuncle then slowly approch the avatar spaming assault until carbuncle attacks. After carbuncle attacks run back but keep carbuncles HP bar in ur sight, the Avatar will usually use its 2hour, when carbuncle dies. Recast him Note that u will not need to use assualt carbuncle will automatically attack the avatar. then use Astral FLow, then Searing Light stay with carbuncle until it jumps into the air (dont worry the yagado drink will keep carbuncle summoned) then run back to the protocrystal and use and ether and a Hi-Potion if you need, somewhere in that time carbuncle will die, recast and use searing light again then run back to where the avatar started and use a ether and hi-po if needed. Resummon carbuncle and use searing light again this will Defeat the Avatar. CONGRATULATIONS! now read on

5. Alternate way
There is an alternitive way that takes much longer but a combonation of this way and the easy one may be neccisary. if the avatar kills carbuncle and you cannot get off searing light do not worry to freak out just recast carbuncle (it may be inturupted SMN skill helps) keep recasting untill you get him then run away and use ur HI-Potion then when carbuncle dies re summon then when carbuncle takes arrgo run away and let him hit on the avatar. Repeat this process untill Avatar is dead, use Hi-po and ether if needed. and eventually u will Kill your Avatar. CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN

6. Fame
For the Mini forks you will need to get fame in Bastok, Windurst, selbina, kazham, norg, and rabao (please consult to other guides for these)

7. Individual Avatars

-Titan
this will be your easiest fight no extra effects just attacking with earth i would suggest him first to get the feel of how to win

-Ifrit
This will be easy also like i said i won in 4min20sec on windsday he is the same as titan just hits alittle harder

-Leviathan
This will be alittle tougher as Leviathan can cause Gravity and can cure himself but just stick to the guide and do not worry

-Shiva
She will be tough with Ice Spikes but stick to the guide she's a pushover

-Garuda
one of my hardest fights she can heal and had a blink effect so knowing when to use 2hour wil be tricky but stay calm and wear her down

-Ramuh
Hardest fight for me by far with Lighting Spikes and Paralyze wich can kill your 2hour, have parylna with u but even if you lose your 2hour just use the alternitive method it works just as well but takes alot longer

(Avatars in order from easiest to hardest for me)

Thank you all for reading this hope it helps you! if you have any questions i am Pazaru on the Siren server feel free to message.

Just a thought...
# Jan 18 2008 at 3:43 PM Rating: Decent
Though quite a bit different, here was my strategy for beating the avatars at lvl 20. I've had several people tell me not to use this method, but as I killed 4 of them first try and 1 second try with it (Shiva killed me multiple times before I tried this method, which worked) I think it's worth some review at least. Tell me your thoughts...

Job: SMN/NIN
Weapons: duel equipped Hermit's Wands (-50% spell interruption)
Armour: Defense as priority on every slot but earrings and belt.
Belt: Whatever that belt is which gives you -8% spell interruption.
Earrings: Avatar element specific earrings, or defense. Sometimes I had no earrings of even defensive value, so not sure it mattered.
MP doesn't matter for this battle armour-wise so don't worry about it, because you'll just lower your defense.
Food: I always had some sort of crab meat.
Summoning skill: I made sure it was above 40. I think by my last avatar (Ramuh) it was around 47ish, while my first one (Titan, easy as pie) was around 41 or 42. While they did get easier after it got to lvl 45, it didn't make that much difference.
Items: I always had about 5 hi-potions, 6 ethers, and 2 yags. I don't think I EVER used all the hi-potions, and usually only used 1 or 2, but I wanted to be safe, and I knew I could sell whatever I didn't use.
Also, I never fought an avatar on it's strong day (Ifrit + Firesday = 3rd degree burns) and tried to fight them on their weak days. I could tell a difference when I fought on their weak day versus a regular day, but I was able to beat them either way.

Usually I would try to get a higher lvl protect/shell from someone nearby before I got warped over. If no one was around I didn't, and it didn't seem to make that much difference.

After entering the battlefield I ate, then I ran up to where I could just see the avatar. I summoned Carby, drank a Yag, and went to the edge of the circle to sick Carby on it without it aggro'ing me.
Right after Carby engaged it I would run up and use AF, then use Searing Light. [You have to be close to the mob (I was always close enough to hit it with my wands) when you use SL otherwise it'll get out of range of Carby and miss. You also cannot move after using it, or there's a chance Carby will miss. both of these are very important.]

After Carby used SL I ran past the first bend, drank a hi-potion and two or three ethers, and waited until carby was killed (I never rested). If he died before I got all my potions down I would simply summon him again, run out of range and drink the rest. I was pretty much ALWAYS ready (obviously) with mp before my timer was ready for another SL, so I would run back up to the Avatar and use it right when it was ready (being close and standing still etc.).
Immediately after the second SL I RAN AWAY, because I believe all but one of the avatars used their 2hr right away (this is the reason for the first hi-potion mentioned above, because you need full health for it's 2hr). As long as you have full life, it's not the avatar's strong day, and especially if you have elemental earrings etc., you shouldn't even be close to dying (I'm Mithra, so I don't know about Taru...).
This is where your Carby dies very fast, so drink an ETHER first, pull him back out (this is where that - spell interruption armor comes in), run far enough away to not get aggro for using a hi-potion, and use another ether or two.
Now just pull out the last 2hr and whale on it with Carby to kill it. Easy stuff, once Carby even died and I killed it by just hitting it, and I think another time I only got off 2 of my SL's. Your Yag may never wear off the whole fight, but just keep an eye on it. I had 2 just in case.
Also, they kept missing me after they used their 2hr, so even without the spell interruption armor Carby may have been able to come out. I know part of this has to do with being Mithra, but I think the NIN sub duel-equip is a good backup.
Oh, and my evasion was NOT that high, because my main is a RDM and I wasn't very high as RDM by that point.

A quick note for Ramuh: I let Carby hit him a few times before I engaged AF the first time, and might have even let him kill the first Carby as I ran backwards to give me enough time to summon him again before I used my AF. This makes it so when Ramuh uses his shock thing immediately (sorry, been a LONG time) YOU don't get hit with it, and carby either has enough time to recover or you're on a different, non-"shocked" Carby. Believe me, it makes a difference.

Things to remember about fighting the avatars:
1: You must have at LEAST twice the amount of magic points as the level you are to use an Astral Flow ability. This means if you are level 20, you need at LEAST 40 magic points to use Searing Light, though some say 41 magic points. While two ethers with a yag drink in effect will do it, you're not leaving yourself much margin of error (if done correctly, it should work every time though).
2: High-Ethers go off WAY to slowly for these battles. I have used them, but it's just not worth it. Trust me.
3: Don't move after using Searing Light, because Carby may miss, and be CLOSE to the avatar or it will aggro away from Carby. I was always right next to it, and it always got a hit or two on me before focusing on Carby again. Not a big deal.
4: ***** magic points, if you're using Astral Flow you'll only need enough to get Carby out and have him attack with SL. Get that defense up.
5: Be ready for the avatar's 2hr. Just... be ready for it.
6: Breathe
7: Use Macros for AF abilities, and possibly potions as well. Not necessary, but very, very handy and could definitely save your life.
8: Don't fight the avatar on it's strong day, and fight it on it's weak day if possible. Fighting it on Carby's strong day is okay, but as three Searing Lights will usually take it down anyway having the avatar hit you for less damage (especially with it's 2hr) is more beneficial than having Carby hit for more damage.
9: Have fun!

I know this strategy is a little more expensive and quirky, but I defeated four of the low level avatars with my lvl 20 SMN my first try with it, one my second, and only Shiva took me more because I wasn't using my strategy with her to start. Everyone told me Ramuh was a butt, but he wasn't that hard at all for me... and I think even paralyzed me before I used my AF once.
If your club skill is capped you can even do some "decent" damage dual-wielding if it's not dead after your third Searing Light (I believe I killed two of them this way, though my club skill wasn't capped if I remember correctly).

I hope this helps! SMN is a ton of fun so good luck to all of you!

This may be stupid but I am going to try doing fight with blu sub. Cocoon boosts def way more than protect albiet maybe not as long but more importantly base def is a little higher and you have metallic body, which is basically a 2min. stoneskin (harder hits may cause it to wear early iknow) anyway just experimenting. (aquaveil didnt help at all since i didnt make any mistakes until after it wore off) i.e. i didnt even get hit until it wore off >< so kinda a waste imo. i get back with how it worked out.

I basically followed the technique used in the Avatar Section of http://www.summoner.info/ … GREAT! site btw I recommend checking it out… its got pics and all… answers a lot of questions and then some…

Instead of me yammering on and on about what I did… just go the site and read the strategy and ur good to go cus that’s the exact strategy I used… Happy Hunting!

If u look like this o.O when battling Ramuh… fell free to read my post about what I did in the “Trial Size Trail by Lightning” section… <found in Quest>By Realm>Other>… made some tweaks but basically same strat as the site given!

Ramuh 1/2
Shiva 1/2
Ifrit 1/2
Leviathan 1/2
Garuda 1/2
Titan 1/1

That site again is http://www.summoner.info/ … make sure u check it out…

# Jul 14 2006 at 10:01 AM Rating: Decent
Not sure if this will work or not, but I notice that after failing a SL right before logging, I got back on a day later and Astro Flow was still up. Thinking of trying this:
Go to Procrystal on darksday.
Use Protect and Astro Flow
Log off and wait for 2 hrs until Watersday
Log back on and still have time for at least 1 Searing Light before I have to start the next Astro Flow.
This way you can use at least 4 Searing Lights in case Carby misses one.

Haven't tried this yet, but if it working it might make all these guys just a little easier. Let me know if someone has tried this already.

I followed this article in prep for the Ifrit fight. Note, I completely depleted my on-hand inventory and stocked up on Hi-Potions and Mulsims, a few yag drinks and crab. My equipment was for the most part interruption rate down gear. I put around 50k into this fight (at least) so I have no clue what one person said earlier about all fights for 50k (perhaps that was pre-gilseller days or a little outdated).

I had to set macros for all these different items, so went off into yatunga jungle to test. Good thing I did because I misspelled Mulsim (which means dead summoner), and somehow goofed up the macro for Astral Flow lol. Anyway, test your macros! It was late lightsday by the time I got around to aquiring all items etc so I decided to wait until watersday. So I took a break and came back, had 2+ hrs to go until watersday. I decided to do something constructive and try to skill up summoning magic.

Note, summoning magic was only @ 24!! By the time I got the fight I was somewhere around 25 or 26.

The way you guys explained the area was a bit confusing so after I had a white mage buff me up I went there and kind of got a feel for what the conditions were like. I went up the long ramp and stopped to aquaveil/yag drink/bunky. Apparently I was too close to ifrit's platform, so by the time aquaveil got off he was in my face.

Tried to summon bunky, failed. Tried again, success. Popped yag drink, bunky hits, Astral Flow and Searing Light. MP goes to 0 before I could drop a mulsim so I have to resummon again w/Ifrit in my face. This time it works on first try, I try to Searing Light again, failed because ifrit moved too close to me. You guys can get the drift of the happenings here...if something was going to go wrong, it did!

I only got off 1 Searing Light, was aggro'd early and had to really pound a ton of hi-potions (TP attacks no Inferno). Somehow it all worked out and I finished him off with a banish.

Next up Shiva...to all you that haven't done this yet its not easy, but far from impossible. Just stock up on mulsims (stackable) and Hi-Potions. I used over 1 stack of mulsims btw...recommend 2 stacks.

Ifrit was defeated in 5:40...no record time, but still quick considering only one successful searing light.

So, I'm going to answer my own question.

There's nothing you can do to keep them from casting En-spells, even running up as fast as you can. What I'm about to say might be a "duh" for most of you who read this, but it really took me a couple of times for it to click in my head. Best thing to do is have the mindset of Monty Python's King Arthur.... [Run Away!!]

First, I dressed for the occasion (Smn/whm):

Equipment
Main: Hermit's Wand
Hands: Scentless Armletts
Head: Erudite's Headband
Waist: Heko Obi+1
Body: Trader's Saio
Neck: Feather Collar +1 (for the def)
Back: Mist Cape
Feet: Light Soleas
Ear: Silver Earring +1
Rings: Fasting Ring and Astral Ring

During one of my battles with Leviathan I noticed that me missed me 4 times. That's when I decided to add the Headband and the Silver earrnings.

Summoning skill: lvl 41 -_-;

Second, the standard: Protect, Aquaveil, boiled crab

After the cutscene, run up to where you can just see the avatar and start casting Carby right away. The avatar will come for you, and Carby will attack the avatar w/out having to use Assault. I discovered that when doing this, the avatar did the opening BP on me. Hey, if I take a hit or two for Carby, then that means he'll last longer, right? He's not going to hate you for very much longer anyways.

Right after you cast Carby, ignore the Avatar's advances. Yagudo Drink >> Astral Flow >> Searing Light. Now that the Avatar isn't looking, run away until you can only see Carby's name. Hi-potion (or just a Selbina Milk if you're not yellow- you use this at some point when it's safe)>> Ether. By then Carby will probably be dead.

Recast Carby. The moment you're sure Carby's gonna go off, run down the hill. The avatar will chase you, and ignore Carby for the most part, even though he's doing his best to defend you. This gives you time for your next BP to reset.

By the time you get to the bottom, the avatar will probably be still trying to catch up with you. You'll have time to use Milk or Ether if you haven't already, and a Hi-pot if needed. BTW, I put /recast "Blood Pact" in ALL of my macros, so that whatever I did, I could see how much more time I had. Extremely helpful, I found.

Turn around and make a face at the Avatar and hit SL. Once you see Carby jump in the air and are sure SL hit, [Run Away!] again (back up the hill). At this point, the Avatar will most likely use its 2hr. You'll probably get hit and Carby will die (if you don't get hit, then whoo hoo!!). You gotta be fast and hope the avatar is slow. Hi-potion >> Carby. If you get interuppted, try again. If your HP gets low, use a Hi-Pot, then keep trying Carby until it goes off. Then, continue running up the hill again and keep running until you can't see Carby's HP, or can't run any more. Carby will probably do enough damage to turn the Avatar away from you.

Now, your BP should almost be ready. If Carby has low HP, wait for him to die. You will have enough time to cast a 3rd SL. Recast Carby and beckon the Avatar to his death (you may have to run toward the Avatar if he was far away). If you get Carby off, you know he's finsihed. Wave goodbye.

Got the record for Garuda (4min 33sec) and Ifrit (3min 42sec) doing it this way. Took down Leviathan using the exact same method 2 hours after Ifrit.

I hope that helps those of you still working on these guys. The problem I had with reading all the posts was that information was somewhat vague on where to run when and such. And I was very frustrated during battles because sometimes I just didn't know what I should do next, so I've attempted to give a little more detail.

Good luck, and "Never give up! Never surrender!" (*^_^)b

I just tried this quest on the Hydra server. It was my first avatar battle. It's all goin good, I'm not panicking or anything. I get the first SL and it does 210 damage "Awesome". So I go back to the crystal, recast Carbuncle and drink an ether. I also down a melon juice (beta server is low on yag drinks and their expensive since no one can make them) since I didnt want the one I already had to wear off.

So I prepared to do the second SL, then ifrit does Fire 2 and kills carby, no problem, recast and do 104 damage >.< "Alright, I still have one more." So I run up and get ready for the last one. "Carbunlce readies Searing Light... Ifrit Prime takes 104 points of damage." 0.o

As you guess die (thanks to inferno). Well it was the most exciting thing I've done in this game so far =). Anyways I was doing really good till it resisted SL twice. I'm planning on doing it again tomorrow if I can get some gill to get more supplies. I was wondering if theres any way to reduce the chance of it getting resisted?

EDIT: I tried this quest again and won.

I brought the following:
3 hi potions (used all 3)
3 ethers (didn't use any)
5 melon juice (used 3)
1 boiled crab

What I did is use the safe method. I used my first 2 melon juice to let Carbuncle melee so it only cost 1mp per tic. Once I got down to 70mp (Ifrit was at 70% hp by now)I used the 3rd melon juice and I activated Astral Flow. I used first Searing Light. I run up and wait for the second (and last) Searing Light, I use it and win. I think its a bit easier this way as Ifrit will be weaker from the meleeing so even if 1 or 2 Searing Lights resist you will still win.

En-spells

It doesn't seem that anyone ever talks about the Avatars using spells like "en-fire," etc. If the avatar has this cast on them, they really pwn Carbuncle (and you).

From what I experienced, if the avatar has an en-spell, then Carby will die somewhere around 30 seconds until your next BP is ready, which means you have to figure out how to kill some time w/out getting killed.

With my luck, on second Carby cast, Ifrit got Carby down to half hp, then cast Fire II and leveled him when BP had 10 seconds left. I had been standing in pretty close proximity to Ifrit, getting ready for SL, but then suddenly noticed that Carby wasn't there... Got interuppted 3 times and died. Yeah, my summoning skill is only ~30.... -_-;

When I defeated Garuda, I noticed that Carby lasted a lot longer against her (it was Firesday) and by the time I recast Carby and used Assault and Garuda was in range, BP had only 4 seconds left. I'm pretty sure she didn't have En-aero, but I'm not positive.

Anyone have suggestions or a similar experience? My brother (75smn) said that sometimes they just have it, and suggested zoning if I noticed that the avatar had an En-spell. He said you should be able to re-enter the battle and try again, but he's not positive.

Thanks!

Mini Avatar Fights

What you need: level 20 SMN/WHM

Tuning Fork for Avatar

1 stack of Mulsum

6 Hi-Potions

1 Yagudo Drink

1 Boiled Crab

All equipment that helps with spell interruption

Good Timing

Attention: This is a very different approach to the normal “Cast Carby...wait to die ...Recast Carby” method. This is a very “Guns-A-Blazen” technique.

Step 1 Acquire Tuning fork and accept warp to crystal location.

Use Boiled Crab and cast Protect. (No need to regain MP)

Step 2 Trade Tuning fork to crystal and enter battle field.

Step 3 Run up the path till you are a small distance outside of agro range from Avatar

Summon Carbuncle and use Yagudo Drink.

Step 4 Move close enough to have Carby assault the Avatar. As soon as Carby hits (or misses) the Avatar hit Astral Flow, immediately followed by Searing Light 2hr.

Important!! Never move while using 2hr wait for Carby to hit before moving again.

Step 5 This is where a little luck comes into play. After using Searing Light your mp will drop to zero. As soon as that happens use a Mulsum other wise Carby will disappear and the Avatar will come after you. Be aware of the Avatar’s 2hr, it can kill you in 1 hit. If you see the Avatar ready its 2hr do whatever it takes to get out of range. If you get hit and live through a 2hr use 2 Hi-Potions and you will be in good shape.

Step 6 Time to prepare for the next Searing Light. Carbuncle needs at least 40 mp to use Searing Light again, so use as many Mulsums as needed. Wait for the recast timer to run out and use Searing Light again. Remember do not move till Searing Light is done. I have defeated Avatars in 2 Searing Lights but not all fall that easy. If need be use Mulsum, avoid 2hr (if Avatar hasn’t used it already) and prepare for another Searing light same as before. No Avatars have lived through 3 Searing Lights.

Note: If at any time carbuncle dies or disappears simply summon him again. If Avatar hits you and interrupts your cast use Hi-Potions as needed and try again. This is why the Spell interruption gears are needed, and believe me it helps a lot.

The mini Avatar fights can be nerve racking and with the huge walkthroughs that people give it is even a further burden to try to remember it all. I've won the battles, I'll do this nice and simple for you, the necessities.

1) You only need 2-3 yugudo drinks, the 25% spell interuption wand, and 1 boiled crab per fight.
2) You may opt for potions if you feel like it, I've never needed one.
3) Carby has a 30 second recast time, so if he dies right after you summon him you're need to run!
4) Searing light will interupt if the avatar is moved even a smidge. When you que searing light make sure you are next to the avatar.
5) Whenever you see the avatars ready their 2hour, RUN.
6) 3 sucessful searing lights will kill any Avatar.
7) Carby costs mana to summon even while you are flowed, don't ever forget to use a yugudo drink when you use flow.

The Avatars will randomly cast their level 2 spells and do bloodpacks. You can't stop them. The fights will take between 3-12 minutes to beat. All the Avatars are basically the same. Don't panic, don't get all nerveous. It is an exciting fight but don't get so wound up that you start making mistakes.

ok so i was trying to get the avatars and i started with shiva (got frozen) then titan (got burried) and so i tried ifrit thinking i was going to get burned.

so i am hume smn/whm with good gear spend lots of gil had 300+ hp and 180+ mp got protect II and Shell (not II). here are the items i took with me:

Boild Crabx1
Yag Drinkx3 (only used 2)
Hi Potionx3 (only used 2)
Hi Ethersx3 (used 1 for safty could have done without any)

so i enter eat the crab cast aquaveil and rest then i run up the stairs and half way up i drink a drink and summon carby. then i run over and use the assult macro on ifrit and then once carby attacks him and i know hate is on carby i hit posion nails then run away! carby fights for a while then he dies i am down by the crystal by now so i summon him again have him fight ifrit i make it 1/3 of the way back up and then ifrit hits fire II which outright killed carby. that is when i discovered....... he is slow! i summoned carby back and had him fight him some more this is where things went wrong...... i was running down to the crystal when i noticed carby still had full hp and i turn around and ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! ifrit had followed me and carby was on his tail so i turn and run back up the stairs and 1/2 way up carby pulls him off me. i pop another yag drink and wait carby dies i resummon him and run down the stairs at this point i am at 90 mp so i wait for carby to die resummon him ifrit has 3/4 hp by now so i hit astral flow and use sl, it hits for 210 and i run away and pop a hi ether and carby dies and i start to resummon him and it takes 2 tries cause ifrit does get to me (stupid hi ether use time) so then i run back down the stairs and ifrit hits inferno O_O!!!! -.- completely misses me but carby gets blown up i hit the carby macro and i need more time so i run as far back as possible and try manege to get carby off takeing a hit for 8 points of damege from ifrit (this is where i poped a hi potion although 8 damege is not something you should worry about) hit the sl macro hits him for 210 and he died. yay! so i did it in 10 min (record is 3 on odin). btw i fought him on earths day so it was weird he was cake compaired to shiva and titan. so my advice is to spend you money on great gear first great items second cause if you have great gear you don't need as many items
Waiting period?
# Apr 25 2005 at 1:50 AM Rating: Decent
Just a quick question: Anyone know how long you have to wait once you lose a battle? Is it longer than a Vana'dial week? I'm peeved... got a protect iv and shell iii lined up, then went to trade the fork to the npc... and he didn't do anything. I almost cried... not really though. But kind of...

I'm not sure it's a full earth day. I tried at 4:40pm the other day, and lost, and tried to try again (lol) at midnight- it wouldn't let me. I tried at 8am the next day and still no luck. Went afk for awhile and decided to try one more time before logging out. At 9am they let me back in.

I'm thinking it might be every earth day in Japan, kind of like the Red Mage AF boots quest. So depending on when you try, you might not have to wait 24 hours. Can anyone confirm this?

Okay, there's no doubt about it... these fights are UNBELIEVABLY annoying. Don't worry though you WILL eventually get throught them, and the reward is worth the effort =)

Okay so after getting my butt kicked numerous times when I first started out, I've developped what has become an almost 100% successful method for these battles.

Now it costs a lot (depending on your server, for me this method can cost from 15k to 22k PER fight on Asura).
Here's what you need:

Potion X 5
Hi-Potion X 2
Ether X 5
Yagudo Drink X 3
Selbina Milk X 12 (just a clump of em will last for a loong time, and they're cheap too, only about 200G for 12)

Okay so very simple strategy. Get your hand on a Hermit's Wand and ANY other equipment that lowers spell interuption rates (like Heko Obi +1 for example), the rest of your equipment try to find things that raise your EVAsion stats, otherwise anything with the highest defense.

Now, when you enter the battlefield IMMEDIATELY cast Protect and Aquaveil (if using a SMN/WHM, I haven't tried any other combo), or you can try to get a Protect II or III from some nice player before entering the battle. Now having macros set for these fights helps a lot (I will post my macro list right after this).

Run up the ramp until you can see the avatar in the distance and cast Carbuncle right away. Use a Yagudo Drink RIGHT AWAY after summoning (it restores MP).

Use assault of the avatar where you summoned Carby (MAKE SURE that the avatar if busy with Carbuncle before moving) now run to the top and hide beside the crystal. Try to run far enough away so you no longer target the avatar and you can no longer see Carbuncle's health, only his name, you know then you are at a safe distance.
Now that you have a chance, use the Selbina Milk (it gradually restores HP). Be very alert during these battles, and restore anything that wears off if you feel you are safe to do so.

After a minute or so Carbuncle will be defeated by the avatar. DO NOT PANIC, this will happen MANY times during the fight, so get used to it. When you see Carbuncles name dissapear from the bottom of the screen summon him again RIGHT AWAY, DO NOT WASTE TIME. Once he pops out again, mash the Assault macro, and once the avatar has targeted Carby again, run back to the place you summoned Carby for the first time (a lot of people say to run back down to where you enetered the battlefield, personally I found this a waste of time, and it actually caused me MORE difficulty, so just do what you feel comfortable with).

Keep letting Carby get wooped until you either:

A) Have the avatar's health down to about 3/4's
OR
B) Have less that 70 MP remaining.

Now's when you break out the 2-Hour.
Once Carbuncle has been freshly summoned, let the avatar come close to you and use Astral Flow, it WILL come after you, but don't worry. Now hit the Searing Light macro, and WAIT until Carby hit it before running away, otherwise you'll completely miss the target. This is EXTREMELY important!!! USE at LEAST 2 or 3 ethers IMMEDIATELY!!! Otherwise Carbuncle will dissapear due to lack of MP, and you will most likely DIE! After using the Ethers run to a safe spot (as mentioned before by viewing only Carby's name nd the bottom) and use potions as needed (Hi-potions if in the yellow and regular potions if you are below 75%HP).

Make sure you have at least 40MP remaining and continue the "Carby dies, you re-summon" method until you can re-use Searing Light. Follow the same directons as before, stay CLOSE to the avatar and wait for Carby to use it.

Using this method, the second Searing Light should do the avatar in. If for some reason it doesn't, then follow the same directions as before, and pray you have enough time to get another Searing Light in before the 2-Hour wears off.

And there you have it! This method has worked for me 90% of the time. Why 90%? Because I once continued hitting the wrong macro thinking there was some glitch with the game rather than using Searing Light, which lead my 2-hour to expire and Shiva to kick my bum. Other than that extremely stupid mishap, I've won every other time.

Don't worry you CAN do it! It just takes practice, it's very rare that anyone can get an avatar on their first try. Good luck!

Here's the Macro list I promised:

1. Carby (/ma "Carbuncle" <me>)
2. Astral Flow (/ja "Astral Flow" <me>)
3. Searing Light (/pet "Searing Light" <bt>
4. Potion (/item "Potion" <me>)
5. Hi-potion (/item "Hipotion" <me>)
6. Ether (/item "Ether" <me>)
7. Milk (/item "Selbina Milk" <me>)
8. Assault (/pet "Assault" <bt>)

Now in case you're wondering <bt> isn't a typo... it target the closest mob, so you don't have to target the avatar all the time.

One thing I forgot to mention before...
Sometimes Carby dies too quickly, and you cannot summon him again from a safe distance. The avatar WILL come after you and WILL interupt your summoning. Here's where the Hermit's Wand and the Heko Obi+ 1 come in handy, as well as any equipment that raises evasion (like Scentless armlets or Compound Eye Circlet). Raising your SMN Magic skill will also help with this situation, you'll want to try to get it to at least 40 before attempting these battles, it doesn't take too long, and it helps quite a bit.

Don't worry, it'll happen at one point with at least one of the avatars you fight. Don't lose it, just keep trying to summon and eventually (hopefully) Carby will pop out.

I wish you the best, any questions feel free to contact me at lion_heart3050@pol.com or just send a message online to Svalitz (Asura server)

Good luck!

I forgot to also say that it IS possible to beat an avatar w/out using your 2 hr's. Of course I nearly lost due to time >.> But it is doable. Just do like any good beastmaster and when you sic Carbuncle on the mob, run to the exact opposite location. Usually this is the area you are when you first zone into the battle arena where the crystal is and the the top area where the avatar first is when you begin battle. You can also use this time to monitor your HP/MP and make sure that your prepped when the avatar comes at you!
My Experience
# Jan 07 2005 at 1:44 PM Rating: Decent
Talk about a messy thread >.> Anyways I've killed Ifrit on 2nd try and went 4/7 usign different set-ups.
On set-up #1, your sub job is NIN and you basically depend on trying to outlast Ifrit (and other avatar) since you can cast Carbuncle faster. The pro's of this set-up is that if you've played beastmaster, you may prefer this set-up and won't panic when the avatar's use their bloodpact's against Carbuncle. The main drawbacks of it are (1) if your not a tarutaru, the MP drain will be horrible and you will need more Yagudo Drinks and Ethers as a result, (2) a pro-longed battle risks you running out of time causing you to loose and (3) you loose the advantages of MP, MND, Protect and some bar-spells subbing NIN. Although its fun to melee an avatar along with Carbuncle, you will also be prone to any spells/attacks from the avatar and you CAN pull hate from Carbuncle easily causing you to die rather fast (;.;)
On set-up #2[b], you sub WHM like you would usually do and buff up inside as you normally do. Like all the posts before, you rely on searing light to do the job. There are 3 importants thigns to remember about searing light that alot of smn's seem to not know when doing their Trial Sizes for the first time. First, when you start Astral Flow, you will pull hate for a few seconds, so you want to be sure that you are next to the mob when using it. Alot of players I've talked to run as soon as activating Astral Flow and carbuncle can't use it since the mob is chaseing you (make him/her too far from Carbuncle). The other part is that since it drains all MP, you want to be using a Yagudo drink right before you activate yoru attack to ensure that Carbuncle is attacking while your running away for safety. Finally you can use Searing Light about 3 times (4 if really lucky) in a battle, so timing it and putting it to good use can make the battle easily yours!
On set-up #3, you can sub blm and carry alot of ether's and potions and nuke the mob to death. As a elvaan/hume, you can tank a good number of hits pending on gear. While you wull pull hate from Carbuncle, you need to be sure to put Carbuncles bloodpact ability to good use durign the course of the battle.
In my experience the best set-up in terms of safety gratest chance of success and most cost efficient is subbing whm. If you want to set server records, sub a NIN lol! Also, other than the typical potions, hi-ether, ether, yagudo drinks and pies, the only other item i recomend that alot of ppl pass up on is Selbina Milk! Alot of ppl who do trial size pass it up and I think its a sahme since it only regen's HP =/ When using Selbina Milk I've been able to take more risks since I dont have to immediately dish out a potion for my HP, so start using that Selbina Milk! Its less than 100 gil each in sandoria for you cheapos who complain about gil >.<
Got Milk?
# Jul 10 2005 at 2:26 PM Rating: Decent
Yeah milk! Milk is sold by a regional vendors and is super cheap, and I have discovered that it stacks as a drink!! so you can chug a yagudo drink and a milk for both mp and hp regen (or a vampire juice) may even stack with aulaits I will have to find out. I often have this in cooking cause there is never butter (or it is over priced)and I often use or hand out the extras to my tank, which always gets the response "what's this for?" awesome drink for melee jobs pre lvl 10 you can take bigger mobs on more safely. Keep that Tp chug a milk. Now to kill some avitars...
SUB NINJA , USE DAGGERS
# Jan 04 2005 at 8:46 PM Rating: Decent
I lost 5 times to Garuda , then once to this guy . I tried to sub Ninja and used two Hermit's Wands , that did not work . So I bought two Decurion's Daggers that I got with Conquest points . They work great . I have 55 inventory from doing Gobbie bag quest , so 55- 16 inventory for equipment =39 slots for High Potions and yag Drinks . 7 Yag drinks for good luck and 32 High Potions . If you don't use them all , sell them back , it is worth it in the long run. I beat him with the Daggers , every time I used searing light the avatars killed carbuncle , so I would get mad and attack with the daggers and cure myself with High Potions . I kept trying to cast carbuncle and eventually it worked and i took the avatar down !!! After that I beat Garuda later and Shiva , all within the same day .

ok here's how i did most my avatar fights....
{macros}

/pet "Searing Light" <bt>
/ja "Astral Flow" <me>
/item "Yagudo Drink" <me>
/item "Ether" <me>
/item "Hi-Potion" <me>

{Items}
4 Yagudo Drinks (YD)
3 Ethers
3 Hi-Potions
{Job}
smn/nin
{REASON}(dual weild) 2 Hermits wands 50% chance of getting carby back out if something goes wrong.
{Strategy}
enter battle feild and go a little past bend and use YD, then summon carby and make way to avatar stay out of aggro range and inch ur way to avatar while mashing assault macro. carby should go straight to him without u getting aggro. run back past the bend a lil bit... while waiting there mash ur carby macro til carby gets summoned after carby comes out wait for him to engage then run back behind crystal as far as u can go and mash carby macro. after he gets summoned wait for him to engage and run past bend a lil bit...use YD when it runs out and do this over and over til ur 2nd yagudo drink runs out {REASON} to wittle his life down so u can use 2 Searing lights instead of three. NOW his life should be at 5/6; when ur second yagudo drink runs out... wait for carby to die. when u summon him pop a yagudo drink and use astral flow right away {REASON} cause u get all hate right now....then when carby hits avatar he takes all hate in 1 to 2 hits. Now run up to avatar make sure ur 'close' hit searing light macro( you dont have to target avatar /pet "Searing Light" <bt> automatically tagets the "partys" mob)...bam carby has all hate take off running to other side of map {REASON} need time for Blood Pact to come back. carby dies u summon him... pop ether and follow carby to avatar Searing light should be ready... and hit searing light macro to kill him.

I've only lost to leviathan and ramuh all others took me 1 try with this method. Hope this works for all u smns out there!
what is searing light

ihave no clue what is searing light?
and how do u use it. i checked it for weapon skill but its not. help me out here
RE: what is searing light
# Jan 19 2005 at 4:41 PM Rating: Decent
When using Astrial Flow (the smn 2hour ability) a new blood pact will appear for each avatar. This "mega attack" is a aoe elemental attack that drains all the user's mp. The element of the attack depends on the avatar. Searing Light is the "mega attack" for carbuncle; it does a large amount of light damage.
