Summary

An adventurer has been attacked while on an investigation to Xarcabard -- and the attacker is said to be none other than the Dark Knight, Zeid! Report to the President's Office for a briefing on the situation at hand.

Walkthrough

Accept the mission from a Bastok gate guard. Then go the president's office in the Metalworks. Talk to Iron Eater for a cutscene!

After the cutscene, head to the Throne Room in Castle Zvahl Keep for a BCNM fight against Zeid. Volker will join your party in battle after a brief cutscene when Zeid is at roughly 65 percent HP. You lose the fight if Volker dies in battle.

Battle notes about Zeid:

  • Zeid can use all great sword weaponskills up to ground strike, which he uses often. He also casts absorb spells.
  • Zeid uses an AoE weaponskill called Shockwave that can sleep everyone. Melees can avoid the effect by staying far enough away. Melee may want to use poison potions.
  • Zeid uses abyssal strike -- a ranged attack that causes stun -- and abyssal drain, which is comparable to the normal drain spell.
  • Zeid appears to have TP regain.
  • Zeid will spawn two mobs called Shadow of Rage, which are as strong as Zeid but have very low HP. They have the same attacks as Zeid. The shadow mobs can be killed with a single -ga spell, but Zeid can recall them later in the fight.

After the fight there is another cutscene. Then head back to Bastok and talk to Iron Eater at the president's office in the Metalworks to finish the mission.

cept for the fact that i didnt get any cs and after the battle, me and 2 other pt members got stuck inside. infact, im stuck in there now. only thing Baolin, Darross and I (of Sylph) can do is type and move camera angle. waiting on a gm to rescue us.

=^-^=

So after about 30 min gm emdub rescued us. then we ran back in and beat the record. this was the 1st (and probably the last) gm tell i've ever gotten! *excitement

This fight is a lot of fun. Just did it tonight (twice as we had 7 peeople needing it and it's a 6 person limit). Set-up was:

WHM/SMN 75 (me)
BLM/WHM 75
WAR/NIN 75
RDM/BLM 75
PLD/NIN 75
PLD/WAR 75

And another PLD/WAR 75 that did first fight.

Didn't even pay attention to the mobs Zeid pops halfway through, and they did hit the BLM a couple of times but it didn't get scary.

Tips for this fight: Everyone take Poison Potions. Zeid has an AoE move that sleeps, so it's better for the mages to not have to worry about removing it from everyone because I was still busy with other tasks. Also, the healer should lock onto Volker and keep him alive, because if he dies, the fight is lost anyway. I find it easier to lock onto an outside target I need to focus on the most, and just cure anyone else in the party as and when needed as you can see their HP anyway. Volker didn't even get hit on these fights, but still it's a good way of doing it.

First fight took a little over 5 mins, the second a little over 3 mins. I found 9-1 horrific, so this fight was cake.

EDIT: The guide is not accurate when it says to buff before entering BCNM. THEY WILL WEAR OFF!! Buff inside but do not move. Zeid is quite close to the door and will aggro.

Very proud to say Soloable by a 75 BLM/RDM.

I just finished soloing this BCNM as a 75 BLM/RDM. It took many tries and a little luck but here's what happened.

Once i entered the BCNM i buffed and fully rested. Then i started by Binding Zeid immediately followed by a Gravity (both are incredibly easy to stick). I then cast Thunder IV which broke his bind, and had time to aspir before he got to me. I started kiting him around (I also hit him with a Bio II before going for the second nuke) and rebinding him when it was ready, followed by a Thunder IV for the second time, and a Freeze II the third time. This caused the break in the fight to occur. He had 58% hp left at this point for me. (so much for the easy part)

The next part always occurs the same way. The npc that joins you attacks after about 2 minutes. The Boss ALWAYS does 1 physical attack, followed by a WS, an Absorb-XXX spell, then immediately summons his shadow buddies. In all my attempts at this BCNM this pattern never deviated. (Also on the attempts where he had time to summon his shadows twice it was also IMMEDIATELY after an Absorb-XXX spell)

After the CS i rebuffed my Blink and Stoneskin and rested. AS SOON as your npc friend starts to move towards the boss i stood up and stuck him with Gravity, which pulled the WS onto me (which is easily absorbed by Blink or Stoneskin but demolishes your npc friend). He immediately starts casting an Absorb-XXX spell. As soon as I saw this message pop up i began casting Thundaga III, which went off right after the shadows popped (your npc friend has hate back at this point anyways and he can take the hits from the shadows for a few seconds if you're a little slow). Because of the earlier gravity, I had time to hit him with an Aspir and began to kite him. Once i got a decent lead on him i hit my Manafont (I only had about 150 mp at this point, curse not bieng a taru) and hit him with a Freeze II. I got a little more distance and hit him with a Blizzaga III to close the fight.

A few notes:
* Bind is your best friend before the mid fight CS, but doesn't work so well after that b/c the npc's melee attacks break it before it's useful.
* I did this with only moderate gear and the only merits i had on my BLM were Freeze II and level 1 MP modification (which didn't make a difference). This would have been MUCH MUCH easier and quite possible without Manafont for a Taru or a decently merited BLM.
* You might be wondering why i didn't cast 2 Freeze IIs before the opening CS. The problem with that is if you cast two in a row it cuts to the cutscene after two nukes instead of three, leaving him with about 10% more hp to take out in the tougher part of the fight. It was Possible for me to cast an Freeze II, followed by Thunder IV, followed by Freeze II again (might not be possible with potency merits) but this didn't leave me with enough mp when my npc buddy charged during the second half and the lowest i got with this strategy was about 53% HP before the CS, whereas the Bio II managed to eat down about 4% and was much more mp efficient.
* In all my attempts the boss NOT ONCE used the sleep AOE weapon skill on me. He did use one quite often that had a stun side effect, but he seemed to use it even when no one was feeding him TP. It's possible i just never gave him enough tp to have a chance at the sleep WS.

Also this fight would have been INCREDIBLY EASY for a BLM duo.

I should say i had a BST in the BCNM with me but he left the first part completely up to me (I didn't want him to break my Binds) while he just stood there. In the second part he used his Crab familliar on the boss, but he only took about 5 or 6% hp, never pulled hate, and i finished the BCNM with a 16% damage spell when he only had 6% hp left. So I would've won even if he hadn't been there. (Also the npc that joins mid battle, with Red Lotus Blade, Spirits Within, and his regular melee attacks, probably did about 10% damage)

Thanks tons Tonic for helping me get through Rank 8 where i could have such a blast on Rank 9 ^^.

failed the first attempt, mages too close + got hit with sleep. pld fell, volker died :(

second attempt was much more pleasing. whm and blm far enough back to avoid AoE. after volker joins in, blm uses -ga til death. i went straight home and bought myself an aketon ^^

second time much more smoothly. whm and blm were far enough back to avoid sleep. after volker turns up, blm -ga's til the end. piece of cake.

Did this the other day. Party setup was: 75NIN, 75DRK, 70DRK(me), 2x75WHM

Our first run we failed because the tank went down and then Volker was killed. Second time was much smoother as we remembered to keep are poison pots up and i took out the shadows with my weapon skills.

Remember to use the Poison Pots. Sleep AoE can really throw a wrench in the plans.

Went and did this last night.

Setup was:
75drk/37thf(me)
75sam/37war
75whm/37blm
75rdm/37blm
75pld/37war
75mnk/37nin

Went in to this battle thinking it was going to be hard.... wow was I wrong. Very easy fight, when the Shadows spawn they will Attack Volker, get your DD's to just melee them, they hit me for 100 a pop but after 2 swings with a scythe they where toast. If you have a blm just thundaga III them and they will drop instantly.

Use 1 poison pot to avoid sleep... and thats about it.. other than that, HAVE FUN!! ^^

P.S. Clear time was 3 min and 38 seconds, has anyone topped that?

Just did this tonight with 75NIN/WAR, 75WAR/NIN, 75BLM/WHM, 75RDM/BLM, 70THF/NIN, 70RDM/WHM (me)

This fight was {Too Weak} lol. We buffed & used food before entering, rested mp. Enter, use poison pots, other RDM casts Phalanx 2. I haste the nin and him and DDs get on the boss. In under a min, we get him down to 50% hp for the CS with the NPC. Afterwards, I focus my attention on NPC, but I never even had to cure him because he never got hate lol. The shadows popped and blm Thundaga3 took care of those. The boss goes down 1 min or so later. CS and find out we have new record on Asura for 4mins 19 seconds. Honestly the hardest part of this mission is getting to the Throne Room lol (long time walk >.>). I think I threw one cure 3 on the NIN throughout the whole fight. Wasn't even a challenge (disappointment) But yayyy Rank 10! TY to Bigpoppa, Kirsten, Slantlinmer, Okezak, and Rignild. Had lots of fun ^^ New record bishes D:

PT setup: Nin, Nin, Rng, Rdm, Rdm

NM Atks-
Shockwave: AoE sleep (can be absorbed by multiple shadows)
Groundstrike/Freezebite: can deal some nice dmg if shadows are down
Shadows of Rage: calls on 2 shadows (low life, decent atk)
Blood Weapon: drk 2hr

to counter shockwave, id suggest melee sub nin, mages use poison pot.
for shadows of rage, have blm use -ga spell, or split pt to tackle each.
for the ws, have cure ready if NM lands his atk.

@50%HP volker joins the fight,
id suggest having backup healer focus on him, main healer focus on tank.

NM did not miss our tank often, he got some nice atks in.
just be ready to cure.
tank, blm, healer can proly handle this, itd be a challenge at least.

tyvm to all that helped me obtain RANK10 in all nations!!! /bow
if you need a 75RDM for any BM, send me a /tell HADES SERVER!

im not switching nations for a long while.

7/25/07
did this fight again, this time w/
69pld 75smn 75nin 75thf 75rdm

pld tanked, got pounded on but survived.
after volker joins in watch for the WS > drain > shadows from zied.
once shadows show up, if u dont have a blm,
have the rdm chainspell thundagax3 to clear shadows.
then put zied away w/ a bunch of thunder 3s.

thats all, gl!

Just did this fight 20 mins ago, and lemme tell you, it was intense.

We just wanted to go in and test the waters, and see how difficult the fight was going to be... we had no intention on even coming close to winning.

Party was
Papajay PLD 60(Me)
Sholah WHM 75
Squirre BLM 75
Graubar BLU 53
Beron DRG 61
Raji BRD 57

Initially I tweaked myself for just Defense: defender, sentinel, taco, yag drink, poison potion, protect, voked and flashed, and took care of as much healing for myself as I could. Eventually, after about 3 mins we got him down to the point that 'someone' walks in. I didn't use an Earth staff, just had Gluttony and RG Shield. Our BLM torched him, and the BRD and the WHM kept everyone from dying, including that 'someone' that runs in the middle of it. BLU and DRG just added what damage they could, his defense is pretty high, so most of us 'lower level' people were just shooting blanks.

We healed up and waited for 'someone' to make the first strike, healers looked after him while I ran in and 'voked the boss, then I immediately two houred, and cure IV'd a couple times... everyone else just went nuts, it took about 2 mins at that point, I only lost hate once. Fun fight^^

Woot Bastok Rank 10!!

Zeid Destroyed
# Aug 07 2006 at 8:30 AM Rating: Decent
This battle was cake with the following setup: NIN/WAR, PLD/WAR, BLM/WHM, WHM/SMN, RDM/BLM. All level 75 and it was totally overkill. All we had to worry about was keeping Captain Volker from getting hate which was super easy. When the three shadows of darkness appeared, all of them were on the Ninja. Black Mage just Thundaga III'ed these things and they all poofed. Blizzard tier 4 spell was a huge finisher. Zeid even went after the blm but shouldn't nix through the stoneskin she had up before ninja provoked him off. You can substitute a summoner in place of a blackmage. Astral flow would definately destroy the shadows as well.

Beat it easy w/ WHM WHM NIN WAR DRG RDM(me) all 74-75.

5mins 51 seconds. He never got sleepga off (perhaps due to silence? dunno is it a spell or ability?). First form went pretty fast. Second form went fast as well. For the shadows (we didn't prepare for cuz we didn't read whole strat), I tried to sleepga and they seem to be immune to it, so I ended up holding them w/ chainspell blink/stoneskin and tossed another sleepga at them when I could just to grab them so they didn't eat up shadows or hurt the whms (they seemed to do decent damage). All in all, extremely easy for us.
Very odd strategy

I'll attempt to make this as short as possible:

Our group consisted of 75 Monk (from Sandy), 75 Thief, 2x 75 Red Mages, 75 Black Mage, 71 Black Mage (me), and 71 White Mage.

We started the day with 8-1. Breezed right through it ^^ As soon as we got to Bastok, our 75 Black Mage friend had to leave due to RL obligations ;;

8-2 was quite easy as well. We attempted to pull only Gordov's Ghost, but our Monk got the names switched around and Chi Blasted a different one, so we just killed all of them ^^

9-1 was our first difficulty. One slime at some point resisted Sleepga, so it kinda went downhill from there. Our White Mage was awfully good with the Reraising though, so after a few of those (lol ><) we managed to get things under control and get it done ^^

Now 9-2. We said our farewells and thank yous to our Monk friend, and the Red Mages both changed to /nin. We were a bit wary of how this would work with no traditional tank, but our Thief had done some pretty amazing stuff in the past, so we were confident ^^

We made it all the way to the Throne Room and devised our strategy along the way. Plan was for each Red Mage to tank a minion while our Thief tanked the boss. White Mage would keep the NPC alive while I, uh, kinda stood there for a bit lol.

Run 1: Dry run pretty much. Realized quickly that nuking = baaad idea. Didn't die, as I didn't nuke lol. Red Mages made Fusion SC and Thief did Dancing Edge for Light SC, and got CS before either me or White Mages bursts went off. Once boss was at 50%, we got the next CS and the NPC stepped in. His damage was more than enough to take hate off the Thief, and he got owned pretty fast.

Run 2: Decided this time that Red Mages and Thief would save TP until after the CS. I made sure to have Stoneskin and Blink on, then at about 75%, lined up with our Thief and blasted the boss with Thunder III, pulling hate and allowing for SA. Worked really great (115HP great lol), but got us to the CS in record time :D As soon as CS was over, one of our Red Mages flubbed his macro (accidentally hit an equip change macro so lost TP), NPC pulls hate, NPC dies.

Run 3: So now we are quite agitated. Decided best way was to eliminate the minions ASAP, so a -ga III was in order. This, of course, meant I was going to eat dirt. But hey, it's for the good of our country right? Go in, same as last, Thunder III > SA > CS. As soon as CS was over, one Red Mage did Fast Blade > Thief Dancing Edge for Detonation > me Aeroga III MB. I tell everyone to make the sad face as per instructed by our Thief prior to entering, everyone does, I die, they finish him off right after I had Reraised and Manafonted a Flood cast. Waste of a Manafont, but the NPC was never in any real danger this time and we won against some really big odds ^^

Moral of the story is that, um... Well, be persistent :D We had a few people tell us that 5 people and no traditional tank would mean total failure, but we did quite well and got our pretty flags to hang over our Moogles' heads ^^ Good luck to anyone attempting this mission, it's a ton of fun indeed :)

Zied is a pushover both before and after cutscene. The big problem here are his shadows. They use an AE special that rips down blinks and Zeid will renkei with them, too. Also, the shadows are highly resistant to sleep and build sleep resistance quickly.

Our group: nin75, whm63, rdm75, brd75, mnk72, drk70.

Lulaby worked for about 5s. ES SleepII from RDM worked for maybe 6s. Then Zeid and his shadow buddies proceeded to own us.

After trying to force the sleep method 3 times (we're stubborn), we switched to a different strategy: just kill the damn shadows. Worked beautifully.

The shadows have low HP and die VERY quickly to a solo mnk or drk (like within 10-15s). Zeid will resummon more shadows when both die, but when that happened, mnk & drk just killed the new ones. So, don't worry if you can't sleep. Just kill them.

Another tip: Volker doesn't really wait *at all* before charging. You can count to 3 before he attacks, but likely won't reach 4. So, you'll need to pretty much just charge in as soon as you're out of the mid fight cut scene. Also, Volker's damage isn't enough to ever pull it off the NIN, but he will take AE damage and shadows will attack him, too. He was never in danger, but our rdm watched his HP to make sure.

Oh, BRD played double mambo if you're wondering. Zeid & shadows are DRK -- low accuracy. High evasion helps a great deal, particularly for the DRK and MNK when solo'ing the shadows.

Just did this mission a little bit ago. 71PLD(me) and 70+DRK WAR SMN WHM BLM. EASY!!!! fight that's all I can say. Hit me for about 100-150, WS did around 200. Hits slow so no real threat of dieing. I hit 300hp once and that was cause everyone was mid nuke and he did ws on me. Just 2hrd and I got all cured up. Cleared in 5min because BLM dced as soon as we entered. So really we won in less than 3.

I just finished this mission ^^ Rank 10 Bastok at lvl55warrior! It was so incredibly easy, not nearly as hard as many people claim, our setup was 75warrior, 75whitemage, 70+redmage, 75paladin, 74blackmage and 55warrior(me), I don't even think he got his AoE sleep weapon skill off, or if he did we didnt notice as we had poison potions, it went smooth the whole time, needed no potions, ethers etc. except 1 poison potion each, I of course only hit him once, so didnt do much, BLM nuked the crap out of him, while 75+warrior owned with rampage, 50%HP-cutscene, Volker was fine, never got hate so didnt need healing, fight the same thing, except he spawned 2 shadows which BLM -ga'd too death, just get your average exp party set up, also, try and get a Paladin tank instead of ninja, seeing as Zeid hits fast, ninja would be alright, but paladin if you want to be safe and you will be fine, hope it helps

This is for those of us that aren't the best:

Party

71 Pld/War (me)
73 Pld/Thf
70 Rdm/Blm
70 Rdm/Blm
73 Thf/Nin
70 Bst/Whm

Tried like hell, couldn' find a Blm to join us, not even for 200k Reward, sad.

Attempts to Win: 3

Attempt # 1) Dumnass Rdm runs up and aggros before we are ready. We fight, no one remembers poison potions, I can't cure myself because Zeid hits to damn fast, and flash doesn't last long on him. Zeid then sleeps us all, I had to 2hr so I could cure Rdm to wake people. Get to Voker, Rdm runs up to Zeid, start fighting again. Volker dies with Zeid Shadows. Volker dies in 2 seconds.

Attempt # 2) This time, remember poision potions, get Volker, resting, dumnass Rdm runs and aggros Zeid again. Pld uses his 2hr to save me from death I try kiting, seems to work well. We all get exhausted of mp as Zeid calls shadows again. Volker dies when both Plds are dead.

Attempt # 3) I REITTERATE THAT DAMN RDM NEEDS TO NOT AGGRO ZEID AT BEGINNING AND IN MID FIGHT WHEN WE GET VOLKER. We enter, beginning goes well, get to Volker, AND I REITERATE NOT TO MOVE. Volker chills for 2 min while we rest, then goes attacks Zeid on his own.

I kite Zeid as others kill Shadows. Shadows spawned 3 times total. Rdm Gravities Zeid, which sticks great. I keep kiting, and party wears Zeid down. This time, we are actually recovering from refresh because Zeid has long reach but is just too slow. We min fight in 9:47. Was new record, but hey, record gets reset every update, so who cares, but I don't tell my party this.

Group of us did Missions 8-1 to 9-2 in 3 days. All other missions went well, except when Dumnass Dannyfeng popped mobs on 8-1 w/o people being ready. 1 death there. 3 Deaths from first 2 attempts. 4 Deaths getting rank 8 to 10 in 3 days, about 4k exp loss total, not bad. Thank you and Congrats to all who joined us, except for Dannyfeng who made my blist for being stupid.

Lol, I got my Rank 10 Bastok as 63 thf/nin, party had only one 75 (rng), 71 blm, and the rest were high 60s, low 70s. Tank and blm are the critical ones, and as somebody below mentions, earth staff for Pld; Blm to nuke shadows. Our whm only cast cure 1x on Volker, and I was essentially a non-entity! Finally at the very end, had enough TP to do my first SATA, and in fact, was the one to bring home the bacon. Not a tough fight at all, but 63 was really too low.
