Summary

Solve the riddle of the ring, and find the truth behind it.

Walkthrough

Note: You must have completed Painful Memory - BRD AF1 and The Requiem - BRD AF2 to start this quest.

This quest begins in the Merry Minstrel Meadhouse in Lower Jeuno. Talk to Mertaire, who says you should take your star ring (obtained in the bard AF2 quest) to an antique collector named Imasuke, who is in Port Jeuno near the entrance to Qufim Isle. Talk to Imasuke, and he says he can't identify the ring until you bury it in the Perennial Snow in Xarcabard.

In Xarcabard, head to I-10 and examine the spot marked as Perennial Snow to bury your ring. Return to retrieve it after the next Japanese midnight. Take the ring back to Imasuke, who tells you the item is etched with an old San d'Orian language. He tells you to speak with Chalvatot in Chateau d'Oraguille.

Chalvatot tells you to travel to Monastic Cavern. Head to I-8 in the cavern, where you find a room with orcs and an alter. Clear out the orcs, including the Orcish Warlord, a notorious monster which spawns there (the warlord is easily beatable with a few level-75 players). Then, examine the alter, and the notorious monster Bugaboo will appear. You do not have to be a bard to pop the notorious monster.

After you defeat Bugaboo, check the altar again. Then, return to Chateau d'Oraguille and talk to Chalvatot, who will reward you with the Choral Justaucorps.

My experiences

I finally got my BRD to this level, so I decided to try and do this quest. I tried to recruit some help but people weren't really available, so I decided to give it a go solo.

THF/NIN is my only 75 melee job, and WHM my mage, so I didn't really have a lot of choice. I geared up THF and headed out to dance.

I decided to go for the "train and re-zone" method, but I was pretty sure I'd need to kill Warlord first, as I didn't fancy a Bugaboo Sleep-ga pop with the NM still up.

I headed to NM camp and as expected he was up. I popped a flee and trained the zone up the path to the Davoi zone. I waited a few seconds and zoned back in, and the NM was already at the bottom corner heading back to his room. I shot him and pulled safely back to zone.

Just to give you some stats here if you are thinking to try yourself, my evasion is capped (276 on THF) + I wore the following (for eva purposes) - OHat (+10), Scorpion Harness (+10), War Gloves (+5) so I was just over 300 evasion, which most jobs would probably find tough to get to (but not impossible). This said, he hit me over 50% of the time, so his acc is pretty good. Hits were around the ~130 mark (I'm Mithran, def was around 180 or so). Crits reached ~330, which when he uses Blood Weapon is a bit of a pain.

Also, with capped (230 on THF) Marksmanship, Bloody bolts only proc'd for around 16-50HP max (compared to normal ~97). I thought I could use NPC in Monastic so I didn't bring any potions, and unfortunately, you can't. Had a bit of a sticky spell when I found this out...!

Luckily I won, but I ended the fight with 18 HP and a lucky evade (shadows were on /recast). This is actually a fairly hard fight, although I could have been a bit better prepared (ie. potions).

I then rested and headed down to the altar room, cleared the rest of the mobs, and popped Bugaboo. I'd already popped a poison potion as I knew about the Sleepga pop, but instead he cast Waterga III (maybe Blizzaga III, can't remember). Obviously, this ripped shadows down and took a chunk of about 550 HP off me (no shell or stoneskin on THF/NIN) and I didn't have any pots of NPC... I managed to get shadows back up, and then proceeded to bloody bolt him.

... or so I thought. Again, I'd forgotten undead can't be BB'd... I somehow managed to win anyway, he's very weak but his casts are quite fearsome. Also, he cast ice spikes quite early which I wasn't able to dispel (no spells) and I got para'd a few times, but it seemed to wear off quite quickly. His drain hit, as people have noted, is pretty fierce as well, ~200 per hit on me + the drain effect.

Overall, these are both fairly tough fights, but if you go prepared, you should be ok. I can only presume its a walk in the park on BST or RDM/NIN.

I just did this quest solo as 75 NIN/WHM. The big problem I had was only with the the Warlord and his Dreadnaught buddy that hangs out in the altar room. On my first try I tried just to take them both on. That left me running to the zone. On my second attempt. I ran in the altar room popped Bugaboo and trained everything to the zone. I quickly zoned back in and was able to fight him at the zone. Bugaboo himself is a fairly easy fight. If you're level 50 you will certainly need help. But as someone already with another high-level job you should be okay.

I went to solo Bugaboo as smn 75/whm 37. When I get there, surprise surprise.. Orcish Warlord was up so knowing how hard he is .. I took out good ol' carby and dragged him and a train of orcs to the entrance nearby. It takes me 30-40 min to solo him using carby. I meteored him about three times. . twice times at the beginning and once at the end. I kept diaing him right before I zoned, when carby is about to kick the bucket. I go to bugaboo camp at I-8, kill the one orc that was there, rest, phalanxed with diabolos, popped a poison pot. It was windsday, (yay), so I called out garuda, pop him and he aspirs me first thing. Garuda can tanks this like a champ and I didnt even 2 hour. Note he does hit very hard and you want to keep Stoneskin and Blink on. (very important). 2 Garuda, 3 predator claw later, and this solo was a success. I had about 200+ mp left and he never slept me. I did go into yellow hp once when I had to recast garuda again. Before garuda did the 3rd predator claw, she was almost dead. Note: you will get hate for putting up blink and stoneskin so please walk a little ways behind garuda when recasting, that'll give her time to intercept Bugaboo.

Found a pick up party in Jeuno just as I was on my way to get the last C/S for this mission in Sandy. I join up, get a SAM73 and NIN70 to help the two BRD59s (including moi) to beat this NM.

It was cake. The hardest part was having the aggro of the Orcish Warlord before the fight, especially since he linked a Dreadnaught. Even then, not too difficult. Bugaboo was a snap and I quickly, and easily, dispelled his Ice Spikes on the first finale.

Mega thanks to Rekkimaru, Tatsujin, and Kafou!

I got some help from an LS buddy, a person that helped me with my AF2, and a random person. Bard 52, Red Mage 75, Warrior 75, Thief 63. We defeated the NM and another orc without too much trouble. I ran up touched the alter, ran back and he casted Bind on me. Casted Sleepga twice and only the Warrior was up. He got down to around 52 HP before the Red Mage got up and casted Cure IV on him. By the time he was defeated and I was still asleep, bind wore off about a minute before the end of the battle, and it went well (for the most part). Escaped, and made it to the garden and got my AF body! WOOT!!! Not too bad of a quest and did most of it all on my own.

yukikaze > gekko > kasha > gekko = light SC

Poped this, it casted thundaga II, killed it right after he got spell off. Had a whm with me but this thing died before she could heal me. This is easily soloable by a 75, as long as you can solo warlord to clear the area.

You do not have to go as bard to pop NM

Orcish Warlord and Bugaboo were a breeze to kill with the party I went with:

75 BLM x 2
75 WHM
72 PLD
67 WHM (me, the person with quest)

I think the PLD fell into the yellow once, but that was the most damage we took. In and out in about 10 minutes, if you include resting time between fights.

Not too hard.

Bugaboo duo-ed with NIN75 and BLM75 (both played by me). His endrain isn't 100%, only hit me once. He resisted most enfeebles including stun and silence, so I had no chance getting rid of his magic. He casts up to Stonega III, but most hurting was Blizzaga II for 450.

Anyways, he isn't all that hard. Somepage lists it as level 63 and that seems to be about right.

I just duo'd this as 75 sam/war with a 75 whm/blm.

We got there and killed the two orcs, warlord and dreadnaught, without too much of a problem. Whm rested up and I built TP and then I popped it. (whm barsleep'd before pop and poisoned pot'd) It popped casting blizzaga II and then proceeded to sleepga right after. The whm, luckly, was not asleep long and cured me ( was in the yellow after the bliz). Anywho, I gekko'd it and then meditated and gekko'd again, and it was down about halfway, so I figured I would just toss up my two hour and finish it. however, it was spamming curse and blind. I missed one ws on two hour, but the last two killed it np.

Overall, it was pretty easy. Allah doesn't know the lvl but it cant be higher then 55, it was pretty weak.

I'm a decent BLM75 with above average gear but I couldn't solo this ghost.

Basically you must clear the room first, the Dreadnought and Warlord. I solo'd the Warlord within 4-5 nukes, easliy. The problem is the ghost's "Endrain" which ignores Stoneskin. Stoneskin took the physical damage but the additional effect drain was doing 200ish per hit. I had 880ish HP so after 3-4 hits I was pretty much dead.

I came back with 2 RDM, 2 BLM and a MNK. Of course it didn't stand a chance, but I noticed it had high resistance to enfeebling magic. Hope this help.

I just did this on RDM and I didn't notice an Endrain effect going through SS. Also, there are posts of 200 Endrains? Um.. his Endrain never broke 20 on me, I even tested it by dropping SS once, his Endrain did 18. My SS took about 6 or 7 hits before he could break it.

Both tries are in the same day.

1st:
73 PLD
73 DRG
59 BRD (me)

We get there and realize that the Warlord and Dreadnought are there..><. We take them on none the less and win rather easily. The drg, however, rushes things a lil too much and spawns Buggaboo as soon as we defeat the two orcs. It starts out by using Stonega III. We all hit yellow and battle pretty much goes downhill from there.

2nd Try:
73 PLD {same}
73 DRG {same}
58 BRD (yes 58, I delvl'ed but got it back after defeating him)
68 DRK
75 WHM
74 RDM

Yeah, the whm and rdm came to tractor and raise us. After all the weakened stuff was taken cared of, we get back into the fray. Warlord and Dreadnought respawn, we take them down. I spawn Buggaboo and we literaly raped it. DRK did SATA Crescent Moon on the damn thing then the WHM uses Hexa Strike for a Light SC. Yea..owned. So, now, I got my armor and I show it around. lol

I remembered helping a BRD do this a while back and that it was pretty easy fight, so I decided to solo it today as NIN/WHM.

I nearly died while Paralyzed and Sleepga'd with no shadows up. I got drained and had a little over 200 hp left, took a hit for 100 damage and got shadows back up. I disengaged at this point,Divine Seal-Cure III, and I was back in business.

It's not too hard to solo other than the almost constant Paralyze and the Sleepgas which leave you vulnerable with no shadows and no way to recast.

Main things I'd recommend to NIN wanting to solo this. Bring a couple poison pots and use those in case of Sleepga. Remedies would be nice if Paralyna is taking too long to cast but they aren't necessary.

Dodging aggro
# Jan 08 2006 at 12:33 AM Rating: Decent
Ok, just wanted to post this up here because when I looked @ this thread I thought this would be a nightmare... this is for people who do NOT want to take the Warlord
From what I had read I was fairly sure we could not handle the Warlord, although now I think we probably could have, this was the set up

Nin/war 64 (me)
Brd/whm 64 (gf)
War/nin 64
Rdm/whm 64
Whm/blm 70 (our help)

we got there and cursed our luck when we saw the warlord, then we set up camp in a nice little hallway right off from the room before the throne

we pulled the orcs in the adjoining room, then grabbed the Dread and killed him. Up to this point we were dreading pulling the warlord, but we were preparing for it. At this moment I got a phone call and was completely distracted and I knew tanking a mob that would probably kill us would be a bad idea, so I went into thethrone room with the Brd, and she popped the ghost, and we walked back out, no aggro.

Due to Orc ambush (no orcs in sight when we set camp but they came up behind us and started aggroing O.o) the fight wasn't as easy as it should have been. WHM and RDM exhausted mp, rdm had to convert and 2 hour to kill the last orc that had aggroed.

In the meantime, with the ghosty dropped, the bard ran back into the throne room, gotthe CS, and ran out. No warlord :D so if anyone has a party who can't handle him, just avoid him... yes everyone should know how to dodge aggro, even bards XD goodluck

Did this in a fun way: 65RDM, 75WHM(me), 57 Bard

WHM solo'd the Dreadnaught and then the warlord with a little help from BRD and RDM (refresh/ballad/slow/para, you know, normal debuffs) then popped the Ghost.

WHM tried to tank it... But when blink/stoneskin wore and was being drained for more damage than we could do, decided to change strats: Gravity, RUN!!! and nuke while running around the room. Proved quite useful, with Banish III's doing 550+, and the RDM's spells doing a bit as well (damage filter was on, dunno how much he actually did). Finally the Ghost was dead, and my friend got her cutscene!

;.; now I have to go back and do it again for my bard. *Cries*

i just did this for myself and a friend :D

- 69 pld (controlled by me)
- 75 whm (me)
- 75 whm
- 67 blm
- 60 brd

i'd say the nm is much much easier than the warlord that you gotta kil be4 the fight. but warlord wasn't too bad with the set up either. jst the pld goes down to low hp quite frequently.

then we built tp and popped the nm

the nm fight was pld opening with spirit within 300tp. then hexa strike > black halo, the light SC itself wasn't very strong (one of my hexa strike did 58 dmg T.T), but the MB from blm can deal over 1k dmg. so after the SC the mob was down to 50%, some more hits and another SC came up and blm finished the mob with another mb. pretty easy.

note: this nm isn't like the whm body nm or some other body piece where you hafta kill it once per body AF you need. after one kill all bards can go and get the CS.

hope this helps
Easy

Just did this with help from two kind people. Thanks Kaisiera (74nin) and Kenje (69sam)! Made our way to the cavern, invis'd up and went to I-8 for the altar room. Warlord was easy, as well as the dreadnought. I noticed a RDM posted dispel didn't work. I was 59 bard at the time and my finale took the ice spikes right off bugaboo. Battle lasted about 30 seconds, omw to get the AF now.

This guy can be Duo'd by pretty much 1 tank and 1 support/DD easily. He could be solo'd by a nin or rdm if it wasnt for his ice spikes. He seems to be immune to silence and heavily resists dispel and any ice magic.

That said... pain can add up rather quickly if you arent careful. My 75 blm took 150-250 HP drain per hit. While a rdm with +34 dark resist from w.legs and joyeuse only got drained for around 20-50 HP so it might be a good idea for any PLD or non-blink tanker to get some dark resist gear. (keep in mind rdm has natural magic resist so a pld might want more than just +34 drk)

My buddy and i just duo'd him yesterday both of us were lvl 75 rdm/nin and a blm/whm.
Here's what you do:
Have the tank buff up, including phalanx if it's a rdm tank, and train all the orcs to the nearby zone. At the same time, pop the NM and have the tank also aggro the NM by casting a small magic on it...
Now the second person uses invis and follows closely behind the tank. At lvl 75 a tank should take virtually no damage from any of the EP orcs. A rdm with phalanx takes about 0-20 dmg a hit. The RDM will zone out leaving the orc train to turn around... at that point, the blm will pull the ghost and rdm zones back in. Now you can duo the ghost safely away from any orcs.
Slow lands easily and will make it very easy for any nin or /nin to tank it. BLM can nuke high lvl nukes and zone in and out to lose aggro. Mob dies fast..
