Summary

The Temple of Uggalepih is an ancient place where it is said that evil deities were once worshipped. Gilgamesh has ordered you to travel there and search out a strange, old hermit.

Walkthrough

There are a few quests you might have to do before you can do this mission.

When you kill Tonberries, the Tonberry hate will accumulate. The damage of a weapon skill used by the tonberries is proportional to the Tonberry hate. Only those party members who damage the tonberry will accumulate hate. Because the BCNM battle is against Tonberries, you should find out if any of your party members has been killing Tonberries. If so, they should reset their Tonberry hate. To save time, ask anyone needing to do this to do it before you start doing the mission.

To do this, first go to I-8 in Norg and talk to Magephaud. Give her 3 gold beastcoins (about 8-10k each) and she'll give you a key that will open a hidden door to reset Tonberry hate. However, unless you have killed tonberries before, you cannot trade gold beastcoins to her and get the key. After that, head to F-11 in the Temple of Uggalepih. One of the walls in the middle can be opened with the key from Magephaud. Inside there will be a Tonberry Priest that will reset hate for a price. This is not necessary, especially for mages who heal only.

At least one person will need a paintbrush of souls to get to the Den of Rancor. Go to the Temple of Uggalepih and fight Tonberry Cutters until they drop "an Uggalepih key". Tonberry Cutters can be found a little further in from the entrance.

To get into the Sacrificial Chamber in the Den of Rancor you will need to obtain 4 unlit lanterns which will help open the gate (or you could bring nice friends that kept their lanterns). The lanterns are dropped by Tonberry Maledictors. There are a lot of spots to find them. From the main entrance of Temple of Uggalepih, head to J-7 and open the secret door, exit at K-3 to Yhoator Jungle. Go to another entrance at the right side of K-9 in Yhoator Jungle. Once in the temple, go to H-7. There should be 2-3 Tonberry Maledictors there. Once you have got the Uggalepih key and 4 unlit lanterns, go back to the main entrance and head to F-7 on the first map to get the paintbrush.

Now exit at F-5 to enter Yhoator Jungle and enter the temple at H-11. Once in the temple, head to I-10 and defeat the Temple Guardian. Make sure to prevent the Temple Guardian from using Meltdown ability by using stun because it can kill the whole party. After you kill the Temple Guardian, the door in front will open. Once it is open, head to J-7 and keep going further. There'll be a room with a bunch of paintings and 2 with just the frame. Go to the frame that you have to face south to, and use the paintbrush. It will take a couple minutes to open the door so I recommend clearing out this room. Once the door is open run in and zone to Den of Rancor.

Invisible/Sneak everyone in the party and go to E-5. Clear the room and have people with the unlit lanterns touch the Altar of Rancor to get a Rancor Flame. Once that is done, head to I-5 which will go to another map. On the second map, go to E-5. It is recommended to clear this room because you can't light the lanterns while getting hit. Have each person with the Rancor Flame light the four lanterns to open the door. You will still have the Rancor Flame, in case you need to help other people.

After zoning into the Sacrifical Chamber, go inside the door for the BC fight. There are 3 Tonberry NMs and the order in which to kill them:

1 - Grav'iton (THF)
2 - Molyb'iton (BLM)
3 - Tungs'iton (SMN) + elemental pet

It is very difficult, if possible at all, to sleep the THF. So you can kill the THF first while you silence and/or sleep the BLM and SMN. Ignore the pet and concentrate on the SMN as it will disappear once the SMN is dead.

When you are done, you will get a cutscene and will exit from a different gate than the one you went in. Take this into consideration if you have more than 6 people needing to do this battle.

Just thought i'd add some stuff to this walkthrough. Firstly the order of things is a bit mixed up, here's the order you should be doing all of this in.
1. Get Temple Key drop from Cutters.
2. Acquire your paintbrush of souls.
3. Get your four (or one if you really want to) unlit lantern drops.
4. Reset your tonberry hate.
5. Make your way to the paintings room and open the door.
6. Light your lanterns.
7. Use your lanterns to open the gate.
8. Fight!

A small note regarding using the paintbrush of the souls. Make sure you are standing very close to and directly in front of the painting on the east wall. If you are slightly off to the side then you will not start painting.

Regarding lighting your lanterns: this was the messy part for us, something that would have been very handy is the map for den of rancor, found here (http://ffxi-atlas.com/nav/?act=show&id=rancor_den).

When you enter you'll be on the first map at H-4. From here simply hug the right wall to get to the Altar at E/D-5. After this come back out the way you came and head to I-5, where you'll go down to the 2nd map. From there hug the right wall again until you get to E-5 and light the flames.

You need both sneak and invisible through Den of Rancor, so it's best that your mages are carrying the lanterns.

Also, something which was invaluable to us was {Calling for Help!} if you have to fight tonberries after you've reset your tonberry hate. It definitely does work, we must have killed 10-20 Tonberry after resetting hate using this method and Everone's Rancor did next to no damage to our tank in the boss fight. Calling for help negates the collective hate build up, but it's useless if you want to get drops.

Despite what the person who posted last said, the qust info is right. You do to E-5 on the first map and then back to I-5 which leads down below. You then go to E-5 to light the torches to get into Sacrificial Chamber.

Did this last night and it took forever since someone who knew what "they were doing" took us to the wrong altar to get the crimson flame. We had to get more unlit lanterns and head back up to the right altar to get the right flame.

The BCNM fight wasn't that bad. We did it with 5; PLD, THF, RDM, RDM, and WHM and won. I died with Everybody's Rancor and the THF tanked the rest of the way until I could get unweakened. All in all, this crap took almost 7 hours when it should have been 3 or so.

Bottom line, just make sure you are going to the right altar and you are getting Rancor's Flame, not one with a color in the name.

The walkthrough posted here is very WRONG at a very important part, which is when and where it tells you to trade your Unlit Lanterns to the Altar. That is the WRONG altar. I got Crimson Flames (which are DIFFERENT than the Rancor Flames you need to light the lanterns with for ZM4) for the Everybody's Grudging quest, which don't revert back to Unlit Lanterns unless you go get that quest, beat the NM, and finish the quest, which is a mighty pain in the ***. I dont have a map there, so it is difficult for me to say exactly where the proper Altar is, but when you're leaving the Paintbrush Room, it's the altar to the right of that, in the Den of Rancor. Hope this helps. Also, Mysterytour just copied this same freakin' walkthrough, so the incorrect Altar is listed there as well. Be warned.

Everyone's Rancor hurts - 2498 damage about 30 seconds into the fight. Resetting Tonberry hate does NOT save you from this attack

You need to reset the whole party's tonberry hate. The Everyone's Rancor move the NM does in the bcnm is based on the whole party's hate, not just yours. We did it last night with PLD 63, PLD 65, THF 63, WHM 60, SAM 65 and BRD 64. Everyone told us you need a pt of at least 65... Believe it or not, we pulled it off. No dead PLDs either, we all reset our tonberry hate and Everyone's Rancor hit for 400-600 tops. The AM spells the BLM casts hit for a lot more. Our BRD stopped most of them though.

Tough fight and WHM died at the end, but it felt soooo good afterwards. ^^

I reset my hate just prior to setting out for ZM4 that same night. What should of been a walk in the park turned out to be a real pain because of that opening move. I ended up tanking the entire fight weakened, though our Rdm/Nin did a damn good job while I was down. {/cheer Dainid}

Did everyone reset Tonberry hate from your party? It's not based on just the person who is receiving the attack, its everyone in the party.
That's why its **Everyone's** Rancor. At least you got the mission done though.

Just to confirm, I did this last night with only one lantern. It just simply takes a bit longer as the lantern holder just has to go back and forth to the altar 4 times to light each individual lantern at the gate. Since our lantern holder was a RDM he had absolutely no problem getting there and back. If for some reason all the party members don't make it through the grate after the lanterns are lit, there is a switch on the other side to open it up, too.

A few tips for the trip there:

- Bring a few Oils and Powders for emergencies, even for mages. Use these for emergencies, and around the area by the Stairs past the Temple Guardian so as not to risk Magic aggro.

- Only kill Tonberry you need to clear, such as by the Temple Guardian, near the Paintbrush door, and by the BC entrance. As a party we must have killed around 10 Tonberry maximum, which really helped in the hate department.

- Our PLD also tanked Tonberry without engaging so as to avoid getting hate when the mobs were killed.

Party setup was:

PLD66/WAR33 (Syrus)
MNK58/WAR29 (Omnishawn)
RDM70/BLM35 (Silentshadow)
BLM73/WHM36 (Frehha)
WHM68/SMN34 (Me)
THF71/NIN35 (Orby)

A fairly laid back battle with no major hiccups. Went after the THF first while the BLM and RDM slept and Silenced the other two. Everyone's Rancor did very little to any of us which was a pleasant shock. THF went down very quickly, and the SMN and BLM didn't pose too many problems. The only attack you need to be aware of is Throat Stab, which won't cause too much trouble if you're quick with a Cure IV or V.

The SMN is a cheating git, as he summoned Ifrit on top of his Water Elemental to 2hr us. :P So be prepped with Benediction should it hit hard enough. Didn't pull hate from it either, which was great.

After the SMN was dead the BLM fell very quickly. As long as you keep the other two mobs Silenced and Slept when you need them this battle shouldn't cause too many headaches, compared to actually getting there. XD

A shout to Orby for being an awesome guide through the Temple and Den of Rancor, and to Silentshadow for putting his *** on the line by lighting his lantern 4 times. :P

A shout to everyone else too, you were all awesome, and a very fun (if not long winded, lol) ZM4 run!

2nd time around went a lot smoother...partly because we found ppl that already had an unlit lantern. Everyone stayed together, everyone cooperated, and everyone paid attention.

Kudos to the the team...truly l33t.

Anyone putting this together, stock up on extra silent oils and prizm powders and put them in bazaar. You and your pt won't be sorry.

Good luck to you all.

You must actually give the death blow to a tonberry to start the Magephaud quest. Just hitting it is not sufficient enough.

SaferSion...about the same thing happened to us last night @2 am. We have the lanterns, tonberry curse keys, and paintbrush. This time, everyone is going to bring 2 stacks of silent oils and prizm powders to cover their own butts.

I tried to do this 2 times before however we'd get separated or some gets lost and ***** this... and the group disbands. 3rd times the charm I guess. I went to the web site full of maps printed the things off. If you are not an expert of den of rancer do this. we had a total of 3 lanterns even though we wanted 4 we tried but a tonberry and hover tank killed the pt.

Anyway to the final battle. Our BLM didn't have sleepga2 so tryed ES sleepga so the SMN and BLM went asleep. I as a PLD didn't tank a NIN did.

THF took a while to kill BLM and RDM were busy sleeping so me and NIN and RNG and smn where fighting. Finally thf dead, BLM died so easy. Then the SMN all I can say is thank goodness the avatar was light at the SMN got around 50% and avatar got unbound and bam mega light dmg. {killed SMN and NIN and I think BLM he had a rr2 thing on cause he's a BST too so he got back up or he didn't die I was focus on the toberry. so I had to take over as tank btw I took only 300 points from light att cause of af. Switch to earthstaff and invisible there everyone grudged me for a whooping 20 points of dmg thanks to earlier reset of hate. was runing low on mp til I told RDM to refresh and did spirit taker. then throat stab and it went after rng and rng eagle eye blm fire 3.}{all happen in 1.5 min total battle 7 mins

This battle was easy. We took out the THF first. His Perfect Dodge was a pain, but no match for our mages!

Next The Smn Woke up form his sleep and attacked us. So we took him out. The BLM just kept on sleeping.

We killed the SMN and then knocked out the BLM. We did get hit from one Jolt by the Light Elemental, but we were fine.

The BLM went down quickly after we just layed out tons of status attacks on him.

Took us 5 mins and they went down.

BLM/WHM
RNG/NIN <- me
RNG/NIN
RDM/BLM
RDM/BLM
WHM/BLM

Blm ES + Sleepaga I (he didn't ahve II), the 2 rdm did Sleep on the BLM and SMN for backup. The other ranger and myself open up with barrage his hit first and bam, Rancor's Grudge (think it was called) for 1200 dmg, dead. I then did Slugshot, EES, got another slug off. The Rdm were nuking, blm kept slept. He went down easy. Blm went down quick. Only close call we had was when Carby 2hred on us. Other than that, easy fight.

just trying to make a correctión and some clearance on this part of the guide:
Quote:

There'll be a room with a bunch of paintings and 2 with just the frame. Go to the frame that you have to face south to, and use the paintbrush. It will take a couple minutes to open the door so I recommend clearing out this room. Once the door is open run in and zone to Den of Rancor.

There is no frame in wich you face S, inside this room there are 2 empty frames, one on te W wall, one on the E wall, the frame to open the door its the one on the E wall (so you have to face E).
Once you began to paint, you need to stay still "focusing" on the paint, so dont do nething, or press Enter, because this will lead to an unsucced paint.
I just did this Mission today, after an unsucced party the day after.

There are Multiple Altars of Rancor.
# Aug 23 2005 at 9:25 AM Rating: Good
There are a total of three altars in the Den of Rancor, and you have to use the one at E-5 on the first map.

The Altar of Rancor in the southeastern corner of the second map does not work for this mission, as it gives you the Crimson Rancor. I know this from experience, and it is very annoying.

I assume the same can be said about the other Altar of Rancor that is, I believe, far south on the first map. I'm sure as Hell not running to it to find out what kind of Rancor it gives, though.

Few people seem to even know that there are multiple altars, much less that only one works for getting into the Sacrificial Chamber.
man i hate this mission

Been trying to do this for about a month and a half now on my other character (67 DRG)with no luck. Only one of the parties I managed to get into actually lasted long enough to get out of Jeuno before everyone quit, and nobody in it had lanterns. Ok, no sweat, kill some Maledictors, how long can it take? After almost 4 hours of killing the little froggy bastards, not a single lantern had dropped. Party starts getting restless and we get a rash of "Sudden Disconnects" while members are healing. Weird how that happens. We get down to 3 members, my 63 DRG, a 64 whm, and cant remember what the other pt member was. Needless to say it ended there. Had a chance to do it the other day, they had lanterns, but me and LS were geared up for Fire in the Sky ENM, trying for my woodsmans ring and couldnt just ditch LS to do ZM. By the time we got done raping Razon, the ZM pt had already filled and was gone. At least the ENM was worth it. Got a Woodsman and an Ether ring. Let our Blm have the ether and we all went away happy.

Oh well, better luck next time i guess.
