Mission Orders

Determine the state of affairs in San d'Oria and Bastok, and render assistance on behalf of Heavens Tower. Inquire at our consulate in each country for more information.
Traveling by ship from Mhaura to Selbina is recommended.

Walkthrough

This is a VERY long quest and is divided into TWO parts that will VARY depending on WHICH one city you visted first. I suggest completing either sub-job quest (The Old Lady from Vera in Mhaura or Elder Memories from Isacio in Selbina) before attempting this. Getting a Chocobo License and the maps to Palborough Mines/Ghelsba Outpost/Giddeus is advised. In addition, the maps to all the main cities are a good idea.

After talking to the Gate Guard talk to Kupipi in Heavens Tower. She will explain the mission. You might want to start the Rock Racketeer quest from Windurst before leaving town.

Bastok First

The Windurstian embassy is located at the top of Metalworks. Talk to the Ambassador Patt-Pott to receive this part of the mission.

Head to the President's office at (K-8) to talk to Pius and learn the importance of Mythril Sand to the beastmen. Lastly, meet up with Grohm in the Metalworks Craftsmen's Eatery where he will tell you the procedures and happenings in Palborough Mines and then give you 3 pickaxes. Before heading out, you might want to buy some more pickaxes from Boytz's Knickknacks at (H-7) in Bastok Mines. In additon, buy a Map of Palborough Mines from Karine in Bastok Markets or Rex in Port Bastok.

Head off to Palborough Mines via North Gustaburg at (K-3). After entering, go to (I-8) and use the elevator to get to the 3rd floor. Now head to (I-9) on the map. You'll find several spots called Mythril Seams where you can do some mining for the gravel. Trade the "pickaxe" to that spot. You may fail a few times, so keep trying until you get some Mine Gravel. This is the same spot for the Rock Racketeer quest. Note: this is very difficult if you do this solo at level 20, therefore it is recommended that you party with at least one other person.

After getting the item, go to the 2nd level. Head to the middle of the map at (I-6) by going around the right side of the map. You'll see a machine with a lid and a lever. Trade the mine gravel you got to the lid, then pull the lever.

Continue the path to the left side of the map, around and back to the area under the machine. You'll see a lever there too. Pull it and receive an item Mythril Sand. Go back to the embassy and trade that item to the Ambassador.

San d'Oria - The Dragon

In Northern San d'Oria head to the Consulate of Windurst. First of all talk to be the Ambassador. You will be told to talk to Halver in Chateau d'Oraguille. You will need a Ghelsba Outpost map. As well you might want to start The General's Secret quest from Curilla (Temple Knights' Quarters, Chateau d'Oraguille) since the water is right by the end of this mission. To prepare make sure you have a FULL party and you are ready to fight the dragon. If you have anyone over level 25 make sure they have under level 25 equipment since they will de-level for the boss.

Head to Fort Ghelsba and go all the way to the top. There are some huts, behind which is a tunnel leading into the mountains. (You can also get here from Yughott Grotto by hugging the wall to the left as soon as you enter Ghelsba). At Fort Ghelsba you need to head into one of the huts at (J-8) to get to the last area, Yughott Grotto. Once you enter the top of the mountains there are two exits -- one to the burning circle and the other to the springs, for The General's Secret quest.

Prepare yourself and enter the burning circle. There are two monsters: a floating eye called a Spotter and then the Dread Dragon. Don't bother with buffs since the dragon will remove them all in the first few seconds. Kill the floating eye first, then the dragon.

Once done you are sitting in the springs. Heal up and head back to the Consulate of Windurst and pick up your Adventurers Letter from Kasaroro.

Finally, battered but defiant, make your way back to Heavens Tower in Windurst and receive your well earned rewards.

Congratulations on RANK 3 and 3000 gil!

Update Notes

As of February 14th, 2011, there is no longer a level cap restriction on the mission battlefield.

very easily duoed. we wiped the first time when I was 24WAR/MNK with a 27THF/war, but was very close and should be able to do it with a bit more preparation (food/potions e.t.c).

We did sandy first so we were facing the black dragon in palborough Mines.
earlier posts mentioning using sleep bolts would be a better strategy, but none of us had range skills up so we just decided to straight up tank both, which was totally doable:

Went in again when both of us got to level 30. I(War) went in first to catch hate on both, provoked the dragon, used defender and Dodge (from mnk sub) and mighty striked it while the thief sneak attacked the dragon and whack it with his dagger. We just totally ignored the eye which was whacking (and missing) and casting spell on the thief. The dragon fell quite fast and we had plenty of HP left, we just carried on whacking the eye and use weapon skill whenever we have TP. The eye used level 5 petrify on us just before it died so we, both being level 30, were petrified for a while before we killed it (you might want to make sure you're not at a level where it is multiple of 5 for this!!!). but nothing majorly dangerous happened.

In hindsight it might've been better if the thief provoked the dragon (perfect dodge tank it if necessary) and we bring the eye down first to avoid the magic spells. but it's quite a breeze at level 30 either way.

P.S.
I've also killed this before for my brother back in 2005 with my old char with 2x SMN/whm. use the avatar according to the day and astral flow it as you would like the avatar trials, also a very easy kill.

I spent an hour in total frustration in Bastok (which I already hated, fiery fiery passion) trying to trade the mythril sand to Patt-Pott and anyone else, to no avail.

How about you put up here somewhere, that if you do the San d'Oria portion FIRST you might as well not BOTHER with the Bastok portion, and just go forth toward the dragon. I ran in and around the Palbrough mines for a whole day, until I finally managed to get the gravel, then the sand, then trucked back to Bastok, to find out I didn't need to do any of that and yes, I could have gone with that party to kill the dragon anyway.

Thanks
help!!!!!

Just a few questions...
# Dec 30 2008 at 10:46 PM Rating: Decent
Is it possible to help someone in this BC when you've already completed it? Similarly, could I get help from a Windurstian that's Rank 3 through 10 and has already completed the mission? Also, one final (but probably obvious) question: Is there a remote chance that I could get someone from Sandy OR Bastok into the BC? I have the feeling that it's not possible (seeing as it's a Windurst mission), but I wanted to confirm all of these questions for sure before trying anything.

Thanks in advance.
Easier than expected
# Dec 24 2008 at 9:50 AM Rating: Decent
The Bastok dragon/ahriman combo turned out to be quite a bit easier than expected.

After being unable to find more than one other person to kill off this mission, a MNK/WAR (Tsar) and DRG/BLU (I, Chord) attempted to duo it. We both entered, ate a Mithkabob, then went to town on the dragon, completely ignoring the ahriman. I used Ancient Circle and Cocoon during the fight, and the MNK/WAR popped his two-hour. The two-hour wasn't necessary--it was just done for the sake of getting the fight over with.

After killing the dragon, we got the cutscene. It turns out that you don't need to kill Ahriman to finish this step of the mission. After the cut-scene, we saw that the current record time on Valefor was 2 minutes and 35 seconds, and our clear time was 2 minutes and 53 seconds. Not bad for a shot in the dark, I'd say.

All in all, this fight was much easier than expected. I'm sure that any two DDs could do the same thing. The dragon was hitting for about 35ish before Ancient Circle, and 22ish after Ancient Circle. Being a dragon, he's also got a huge chunk of health. The Ahriman really didn't do much throughout the fight. A nuke here and there, but nothing to be concerned with.

Edit: I forgot to mention that no healing was necessary. Both of us had our health in the yellow when the fight ended. I was prepared to use Healing Breath, but neither of us were injured enough for me to trigger it.

I tried this last night with a couple people. It turns out that 3 RDM probably wasn't the best idea to take on this mission. None of us used NIN as a sub (I only have it lvl'd to 6). We did however manage to get it down to 1/4 health before he got nasty with us. I will try again with in the week, if anyone out there cares to come along is more than welcome to. If so please /tell Xuan.

Bastok Mining Guide
# Jun 06 2007 at 3:00 AM Rating: Decent
If the Mythril seam mentioned at I-9 is mined out for the day, or just doesn't appear (as happened with me), there are two mythril seams at I-8, next to each other on the side of the river without access to the elevator. Hope this helps.

Also, after you put the Mine Gravel in the top of the machine, a real time saver is to just fall down the gap in the fence at the side of the machine instead of walking ALL the way around.

By the way, WHAT is up with them continually referring to my shipride? Is there a ship at the city ports I'm not seeing? Because you don't get an airship pass til rank 5, and the airship is the only one there, and this is a 2-3 mission, so if there's talking about the airship, there's an inherent problem there...

soloing as a blu
# Apr 14 2007 at 12:54 AM Rating: Decent
just solo'd this as a blu/nin taru. pretty easy and fun, only time i paniced was when he cursed me and i dropped down to 60/30 hp/mp max. had to do some fast clicking and use a holy water, then 2 hi-potions.

came to the fight with:
2 holy waters (only used 1)
5 hi-potions (used them all)
3 yag drinks (used 2)
and used a meat mithkabob

used the spells:
bludgeon
headbutt
soporific
sandspin
sprout smack
wild outs
cocoon
metallic body

pretty simple tactic, as if you were soloing a T mob, only you're up against 2. right when i got in, i used utsusemi and stoneskin, ran up and popped a yag drink and then ran in and used soporific right off the bat on the dragon. then i ran up to the hecteye and used the bludgeon>>headbutt>>repeat method to finish him off. i only had to re-apply utsusemi i think once, he was really easy.

the dragon should stay asleep the entire time, but if he happens to wake up, just recast soporific, hes always slept for the entire timer to cool down and then some. while he was sleeping, i rested to full, stood up, ate my mithkabob (could have done it at the begining too), then engaged and immediately started with the debuffs, then a cocoon, then a yag drink. periodically, there would be times where i could reapply utsusemi with no problems, other times he would double attack like crazy and made it really hard to get it up. if you get into yellow, use a hi-potion.

pretty much the same method as the eye, bludgeon>>headbutt>>repeat, but with utsusemi casted more frequently. the only problem i had was the one i stated before with curse, so either macro holy water and a hi-potion into 1 slot, or be ready for fast clicking. also, you might want to bring an ether if you arent a taru, but i had plenty of extra mp before he cursed me, so maybe not.

and there you go, a mini-guide on how to solo the dread dragon as a blu :p

edit: changed stoneskin to metallic body :p

got some help with this from two LS members. I did the Bastok part first so it was the dread dragon in ghelsba we were fighting. after the cap we were all lvl 25, WAR (me), MNK (Blacktiger) and BLM (arachnid). we ran in and BLM ES Sleepd the dragon. i berserked and the MNK and I slapped the eye to bits (neckchopper ^^). dragon woke when the eye was about 20% HP and the BLM got drawn in by it, but just cured himself once or twice while we polished off the eye. MNK used 100fists and I used mighty strikes and we took it down easily. got a little worried when it did some move that reduced my max Hp and MP to 1/6th what it should have been, so my max was 102HP but the BLM threw me a few cures and we were safe. none of us used food, and we were finished in 4mins 10 secs, new record on pandemonium server! if anyone on pandemonium needs a hand with the fight in this /tell Mojoviii, id be happy to help (as long as youv finished all the other parts, just the dragon!)

Easy To Duo
# Dec 17 2006 at 3:06 AM Rating: Decent
I just duo this on Asura server. Bst/nin (name: Lanner) and my friend blm/whm (Microwave)cause blm need it. I help alot of people from rank 1-5 so I know what to do.

Battle:
Blm come in ES + Sleep on the dark dragon.
Me and my pet can handle the Seeker easy.
Seeker is totally weak cause that mob is a mage and got weak dif. and low HP.
The problem is the Dark Dragon, it got high HP.
I think the dragon got some kind of move that teleport your member to him.
After using like around 3 pets and some Shihel I kill the dragon.
All blm does is heal me while me and my pet tank the dragon.

Seeker kill within 1-2 minutes.
Dark Dragon kill within 5-10 minutes.
Easy fight if you know what you are doing :)

If you need help just send me a tell. I only help if I feel like it or if I am free.
mythril sand not mine gravel
# Dec 17 2006 at 1:15 AM Rating: Decent
okay after failing at mining the mythril sand and tossing out countless amounts of
mine gravel to make room for the possibility of one day mining that mythril sand... i realized what actually happens. and in the forum it seems i'm not alone in my stupidity. here me out - you do not mine for mythril sand, you mine for exactly what the post says - mine gravel. the refining machine has 3 parts, not two. you activate the refiner at the top, and also open the lid as a second step. once the machine starts smoking, you know its good to go. trade the mine gravel to the lid and then pull the top lever and you'll get a 4-5 message that its working. go down to the bottom and pull the bottom floor level and you'll get that oh so valueable mythril sand once and for all.

For those of you on the Fenrir server.

I am looking to form a party for "The Three Kingdoms" Quest (Windhurst 2-3).

Anyone interested, please meet "Perdition" in front of the Auction House in San D'Oria South, Saturday November 18, 2006, at 4pm ET/7pm PT.

All are welcome. Remember, if you are over level 25, bring weapons and armor no higher than 25. We will switch to our 25 and under armor/weapons at the last minute (after we travel there).

You can message my main char, Perdition (BLM30/WHM15), if you have any questions.

BOARD ADMIN: You can delete this message after 11/18/06, if you wish.

Thanks!

Just soloed this as a MNK/WAR. It costed me about 15k total, thats including the cost of the teleport Holla. I brought with me, 1 Meat Mithkabob, 10 Hi-Pots(Not expensive, 100HP quick casting) and 2 Holy waters(Definatly want to bring these because of a WS Called Chaos Blade, It will bring you a curse and to 100HP.)

I ran in, put up Dodge, Focus, then attacked the spotter. Right when you engage the spotter put up Hundred fists, that will kill the spotter really quick, then auto target the dragon and the 2hr will pretty much half the dragon. At this point start franticly spamming Hi pots to keep yourself alive and to outlast the dragon. The dragon only hit me for 30~40HP a hit but having the dragon and the spotter hitting you at the beggining is nasty thats the only part your in really any danger.

Thats about what I did, It costed me 15k, 1.5x2 for the holy water, 1kx10 for the hi pots and the mithkabob was 1k and the tele was 1k. I am Mithra with 509 HP exact at lvl 25.

These were my tactics on this fight, although thinking back I really should have brought along, a perkisos au lait, those being probably the most expensive of the entire fight, but it would help alot most likely.

I survived with 36HP, you might want to think about more hi pots or subbing NIN. I didnt have the option of that so I just went good ol' /war and did it.

Good luck with this!
