Mission Orders

Determine the state of affairs in San d'Oria and Bastok, and render assistance on behalf of Heavens Tower. Inquire at our consulate in each country for more information.
Traveling by ship from Mhaura to Selbina is recommended.

Walkthrough

This is a VERY long quest and is divided into TWO parts that will VARY depending on WHICH one city you visted first. I suggest completing either sub-job quest (The Old Lady from Vera in Mhaura or Elder Memories from Isacio in Selbina) before attempting this. Getting a Chocobo License and the maps to Palborough Mines/Ghelsba Outpost/Giddeus is advised. In addition, the maps to all the main cities are a good idea.

After talking to the Gate Guard talk to Kupipi in Heavens Tower. She will explain the mission. You might want to start the Rock Racketeer quest from Windurst before leaving town.

Bastok First

The Windurstian embassy is located at the top of Metalworks. Talk to the Ambassador Patt-Pott to receive this part of the mission.

Head to the President's office at (K-8) to talk to Pius and learn the importance of Mythril Sand to the beastmen. Lastly, meet up with Grohm in the Metalworks Craftsmen's Eatery where he will tell you the procedures and happenings in Palborough Mines and then give you 3 pickaxes. Before heading out, you might want to buy some more pickaxes from Boytz's Knickknacks at (H-7) in Bastok Mines. In additon, buy a Map of Palborough Mines from Karine in Bastok Markets or Rex in Port Bastok.

Head off to Palborough Mines via North Gustaburg at (K-3). After entering, go to (I-8) and use the elevator to get to the 3rd floor. Now head to (I-9) on the map. You'll find several spots called Mythril Seams where you can do some mining for the gravel. Trade the "pickaxe" to that spot. You may fail a few times, so keep trying until you get some Mine Gravel. This is the same spot for the Rock Racketeer quest. Note: this is very difficult if you do this solo at level 20, therefore it is recommended that you party with at least one other person.

After getting the item, go to the 2nd level. Head to the middle of the map at (I-6) by going around the right side of the map. You'll see a machine with a lid and a lever. Trade the mine gravel you got to the lid, then pull the lever.

Continue the path to the left side of the map, around and back to the area under the machine. You'll see a lever there too. Pull it and receive an item Mythril Sand. Go back to the embassy and trade that item to the Ambassador.

San d'Oria - The Dragon

In Northern San d'Oria head to the Consulate of Windurst. First of all talk to be the Ambassador. You will be told to talk to Halver in Chateau d'Oraguille. You will need a Ghelsba Outpost map. As well you might want to start The General's Secret quest from Curilla (Temple Knights' Quarters, Chateau d'Oraguille) since the water is right by the end of this mission. To prepare make sure you have a FULL party and you are ready to fight the dragon. If you have anyone over level 25 make sure they have under level 25 equipment since they will de-level for the boss.

Head to Fort Ghelsba and go all the way to the top. There are some huts, behind which is a tunnel leading into the mountains. (You can also get here from Yughott Grotto by hugging the wall to the left as soon as you enter Ghelsba). At Fort Ghelsba you need to head into one of the huts at (J-8) to get to the last area, Yughott Grotto. Once you enter the top of the mountains there are two exits -- one to the burning circle and the other to the springs, for The General's Secret quest.

Prepare yourself and enter the burning circle. There are two monsters: a floating eye called a Spotter and then the Dread Dragon. Don't bother with buffs since the dragon will remove them all in the first few seconds. Kill the floating eye first, then the dragon.

Once done you are sitting in the springs. Heal up and head back to the Consulate of Windurst and pick up your Adventurers Letter from Kasaroro.

Finally, battered but defiant, make your way back to Heavens Tower in Windurst and receive your well earned rewards.

Congratulations on RANK 3 and 3000 gil!

Update Notes

As of February 14th, 2011, there is no longer a level cap restriction on the mission battlefield.

There seems to be much confusion about this mission, so be aware of this before you start it:

If you start go to Bastok:

1. Get Mythril Sand first
2. Go kill Dread Dragon in Yughott Grotto's Burning Circle.

If you start in San d'Oria:

1. Kill Warchief in Gleshba
2. Go and kill Dark Dragon in Palborough Mines (Burning Circle).
Easy way to kill Dragon
# Jan 23 2004 at 11:21 AM Rating: Decent
Well an easier way to kill the dragon is to have 2BLM. Why u said? It's for their sleeping ability. Sleep the dragon, but don't attack it at all, instead, focus on his little friend. 1WHM is needed for healing, that's a no pointer.
RE: Easy way to kill Dragon
# Feb 28 2004 at 2:31 PM Rating: Default
That is true - and if you use Elemental Seal before putting the Dread Dragon to Sleep, you only need 1 BLM. 4 of us lvl 25 defeated it in 5:34 - 25 BLM / 12 WHM; 25 DRK; 25 RNG; 25 THF / 12 MNK. Good luck!

Im a 21MNK/10THF, and I got wooped up last night by the dragon and his little friend. I would advise Everyone to make sure they have at least a party of 5 with them when fighting the dragon. The dragon and its little friend link and woop **** together, so be prepared. I had a 25WHM with me. Yes, we had a deathwish.

Vatgit
# Jan 08 2004 at 10:59 AM Rating: Default
I went to Sandoria instead of Bastok and was sent to kill Warchief Vatgit as the first part of the mission. I've slain Vatgit twice now, the 2nd time witnessing him spawn and nailing him. When I return to Sandoria however the person giving you the mission (in the Castle) won't aknowledge the kill. His response: Don't make me repeat myself.

Does anyone know what I'm lacking here? Vatgit only drops a Fire Crystal so there's no way to prove the kill...

You have to go back to the Windurst consulate instead of the castle... talk to the Taru chick that's sitting at a desk in the second room, that should complete that part of the mission.
RE: Vatgit

If you went to Sandoria first I think after you kill the Vatgit you have to go to your consulate nad not back to the guy who gave you the mission.
totally confused
# Jan 03 2004 at 5:37 AM Rating: Decent
I chose bastok as the first place to go. The instructions here say to go to K-9 on the 2nd floor. K-9 is a blank region on the map on 2nd level. So... I've poked around a bit. got killed once, still lost.

I haven't met anyone that started in windurst, and chose bastok as the starting place. so I've got no help from anyone that I've met in the game.

Can someone elaborate a little on where to go?
RE: totally confused
# Jan 04 2004 at 12:39 AM Rating: Decent
Ok. I think the K-9 instruction is just wrong.

Here is what I did for the first part starting in bastok:

Mine on first floor at J-8 mithral seam (either one) to get gravel. the path to J-8 is a detour along a path that branches into a T shape. If you go back and continue as if you didn't take the detour you are lead to the refining machine on floor... 3?, I dont' know.

Trade the gravel to the hopper and pull the lever. go around the machine to drop down below. pull the lever down there and recieve the sand. Now you can return to bastok, by exiting from the first floor, or go up the elevator at I-8 and find the boats that are nearby which will take you back to bastok. At level 21 all the quadavs were easy prey this way.

I'm told there is another mithral seam at i-9 (a culdesac up a little from the burned spot on the map) on the third floor. I will go there later for the rock racketeer quest. I didn't feel like fighting the somewha tstronger quadavs there. I'll come back when my level is higher.
Mithryl sand
# Dec 28 2003 at 11:06 PM Rating: Decent
I got the mithryl sand from the machine in the mines, but the consul does not do anything when I try to trade it. What do I do now? Do I have to go to the burning circle in the mines?
Level 25?

Me and 5 friends went to try it, and 3 of them forgot to get the quest so it was a 25 blm 23 war and 21 whm and we were whooped, they took out our blm first, then me the whm, then the war, also we had each of them down to half life
Awesome mission
# Dec 14 2003 at 11:24 PM Rating: Default
A group of 4 of us did this, Monk/War, a Whm and 2 BLMs. We had a close call from the dragon's nasty curse ability, but other than that it wasn't too bad.

IMHO, the cut scenes were awesome!!!

RE: WARNING

yes that is true
it 'walkthrough' above assumes you go to bastok first.
but i went to san d'oria first, i had to go kill some orcish warchief then after you'll havta kill the bastok dragon.
...
# Dec 03 2003 at 10:36 PM Rating: Good
I went to Sandoria first, and was asked to kill an easy con warchief (I am 25).

Get the map to Warchief Vatgit in Ghelsba from North San. The vendor NPC is standing at the fountain. Ghelsba is at the northern west tip of the wilderness area. In Ghelsba, just keep moving up until you see the biggest encampment at the very top.

Map to the Pal Mines is available in Bastok Market, one of the two tents near the entrance/ exit of Bastok Mines. In the mines, try to get one level up using an elevator (throw the switch). Look for it, I forgot the coords (I-8? don't quote me). On the 2nd level, you will notice your map has burnt marks to the south, go there (a lot of circling around closed doors). Enter the burning circle. Rest up and fight. A 25 WHM and myself 25 RDM died, we took the Eye out and left the Dragon with a sliver of health. Four lvl 25s should do it comfortably.
Couldn't get in!
# Dec 01 2003 at 3:36 AM Rating: Default
I went there with a full group of people I'd picked up along the way. When we got to the burning circle, only 3 of us were transported and the other 3 couldn't get in.

Does everybody in the party have to have the Windurst mission 6, or can they have mission 6 from any nation?

i was able to recieve this quest from the guards at levl 16. i imagine ill do some serious leveling before trekking out.
RE: min level
# Dec 01 2003 at 9:53 AM Rating: Decent
Yeah, the correction needs to be made that there level req is 15, though 25 is HIGHLY suggested. All you need is a full rank bar to get it (ie: force feed your WW those hordes of earth or water crystals you have laying around)

As for the curse on it, it's so players that haven't started the quest yet don't have a gameflag on them saying they've killed the dragon already, even though they aren't supposed to have done so yet.

This mission bites you gotta depend on people fom another nation that you dont know to let you in a party,i been waiting 2 days for a party to have a open spotand let me join, but enuff whining the map and walkthru are correct you have to walk thru a house to get to it the house is in j-9 but exits out to j-9
Oh God Damnit...

***** me....

I went to San'd'Oria first, so all I had to do was kill a dinky Warchief there, and have not been able to figure out what it wants from me in Palborough; I really expected another identical quest except with a Quadav Warchief... and then I read this. Do I have no choice whatsoever in where I can fight the dragon now? Because if it has to be in Bastok I'm just screwed -- I'm a level 18 monk and there are never people in that area on my server, it would be impossible to find the proper support. Is there any chance I could go fight it in San, like, with a party? :X

someone help me I have the mithril sand who do I give it to to finish the damn quest?
More then one way
# Nov 26 2003 at 5:27 PM Rating: Default
There more then one way of doing this quest

I'm from windurst I went to sans killed an ogre there then had to goto Bastok and goto burning circle there and kill a dragon.

Kind of sucks that everybody in the group has to have the quest up to that point or have completed it before. I went with group of 5 or more and 2 of the group members couldn't come in. We got dragon down to 20% or less and we died.

advice
# Nov 24 2003 at 1:47 PM Rating: Default
just a lil advice: the dragon and the eye is the same for all nations, just in different locations. It can be done with a group of three level 25's with 2 hour abilities up, assuming they are balanced (ie nuker tank and healer.)
Only people who are on mission 6 or beaten mission 6 will be able to help you so be careful who you bring. It's also nice to have a level 29 BLM with you so that he can just use "escape" on your whole party after the battle...
You should also try to pick up a key from the mobs just before the grotto to unlock khazam if you haven't already.
RE: advice
# Dec 23 2003 at 11:42 PM Rating: Decent
a 24 mnk/war and a 23 whm took the dragon by themselves relatively easily so the dragon is not too hard
Level restriction
# Nov 23 2003 at 5:32 PM Rating: Default
I did this quest at level 22. So I'm guessing that the level restriction is for like 20-25. When you enter in the area it delevels you to 25. I think the importnat thing is that everyone is on the same quest. (which is bad game design if you ask me.)

Here's a note I just picked up, having just done the Palborough Mines part. After you put in the ore and pull the lever, you do NOT have to fight your way down the left hand side of the dungeon to get the stuff from the bottom.

Just go to the back of the machine and drop down to the floor below!

Of course, you now have to fight your way OUT....
heh
# Nov 20 2003 at 5:57 AM Rating: Excellent
you people need to learn when to chill out and look around a bit , if you look to whats closest to the location that is said , you would of found it. its in (I-9) which if you look is rather close to (K-9) on the map (that is if you actualy bought the map)...
