Gauntlets wrought by Borghertz, the legendary craftsman, lie hidden somewhere in Vana'diel.

Note: You must have completed The Three Magi - BLM AF1 and activated Recollections - BLM AF2 to start this quest.

First, go to Upper Jeuno and speak to Guslam at the armor shop. A cutscene will occur and he'll say that there's a rumor that Borghertz's gloves were somewhere in Garlaige Citadel.

Next, you need a coffer key from Garlaige Citadel. Keys drop from enemies such as vault weapons, over weapons, Hellmines, Magic Jugs, Fallen Mages and Fallen Majors.

After obtaining a key, find and open a treasure coffer to retrieve a key item, Borghertz's old gauntlets. All of the coffer spawn points are behind banishing gates, which require a total of four people to open (each person stands on a switch to open the gates) -- the gates may also be bypassed using Garlaige Citadel (S) and the Sparkling Light mini-quests. Treasure coffers spawn behind Banishing Gate #3 at G-6, I-5 and I-7. Behind Banishing Gate #2, coffers spawn at G-8, H-8 and I-7. You can be any job when you open this coffer.

Go back to Guslam. He'll tell you to ask Yin Pocanakhu in the Tenshedo in Lower Jeuno about the whereabouts of Borghertz's old toolbox. Give Yin Pocanakhu 1000 gil, and she'll tell you the toolbox is near the Duty Free shop in Port Jeuno.

Examine the ??? in Port Jeuno between the Duty-free Shop and the auction house. A cutscene will occur and Borghertz will appear. He instructs you he needs Shadow Flames from Castle Zvahl Baileys to repair the gauntlets.

Go to Castle Zvahl Baileys and examine the torches at F-8. An NM Bomb, Dark Spark, will spawn. Kill Dark Spark and then examine the torch again (make sure its the same torch, or else Dark Spark will reappear) to receive the Shadow Flames (key item).

Go back to Port Jeuno and examine the toolbox again to receive your Wizard's Gloves.

BLM/WHM level 69 solo
# Sep 04 2010 at 6:19 AM Rating: Decent
I soloed the Dark Spark BLM/WHM level 69. I pulled the Dark Spark to the safer area near the entrance, Stoneskin and Blink up and casted Bind > Firaga III > Sleep II and rested my MP again and again. It took 824 damage each. The Dark Spark stand 8255 damage at all.

Not as hard as it used to be.

Retrace -> Sauromugue [S] -> Garlaige [S] -> Garlaige -> Coffer

Got coffer on my own within an hour. I was lucky on placement tho. :D

Finally, these gloves are mine!

Kinda cheesed my way throught this quest. I had the rdm af hands quest flaged so first I had to do that... (70 rdm) useless pair of gloves there...
Then talked to Guslam, CS.
Went to Garliage and just shouted for anyone who was fighting the key mobs, someone was so I offered 10k and they invited me and I cast lot on the key (5 mins).
Then ran to gate 1 where there was a party who was nice enough to let me through,
Gate 2 had 3 people who were trying to get a Galka through the gate for the coffer as well... I felt kinda bad but i put on my Sprinters shoes hit the quickening and once the gate was opened I B-lined it... Galka started to d/c and I found the Coffer 1st... sry dude (10 minutes).
Back to Port Jeuno for the Toolbox CS.
Finally I was lucky enough to find someone farming demons for gil, asked for help and they obliged me. (Thanks Kins).
Poped Dark Shadow and the 75 thf mopped the floor with it, all I did was heal a little bit + Haste + enfeebs.
Checked the torch again for Shadow flames. (20 mins).
Warped back to Port Jeuno and went to the toolbox CS and I had my Wizard Gloves.
Total Time: maybe 30 mins. Lucky day for me
Level correction.

This is just a quick note. It's true that you need to have finished the AF Quest "The Three Magi" and that you also have have to have at least flagged or completed the Quest "Recollections" but after I had completed both the "The Three Magi" and the "Recollections" quests I dropped down to level 49 but was still able to get this quest at level 49BLM. That's just my two cents. I know it's kind of a point that doesn't really need to be said but I will say it anyways. Thanks

My blm51 and already completed The Three Magi (but I haven't gone back to talk to Shantotto again, dont think it's relevant). I cannot start this quest somehow. I dont have any other AF quest in progress. Guslam just says "You found the gauntlets? Amazing!...." The gauntlets refer to my Drachen Gauntlets completed so long ago. Anyone has any suggestion?

RE: Oops
# May 09 2006 at 5:34 AM Rating: Decent
There is a way to get them again, but by doing this you have to do your other BLM AF too >.< but u could just do them and throw them away or something or just get to this quest and not do any others.
If you a high amount of fame in Jeuno and have completed all of the AFv1 quests (including coffers) you can go to an elvaan NPC in the Lower Jeuno magic shop that will erase your memory of ever doing all 5 of the quests for the armour for 10k. when i first saw him i thought i could be any quest so i can do Sleepga II quest again and keep selling but but i'm afraid not :p
Anyway, hopes this helps some

Guslam wont even give me the quest, i am Level 51 BLM and have completed AF 1 - The Three Magi.

All he tells me is "Hello. Head to the counter for service." Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Yea, just a casual note that no one has seemed to post here. If this is your second AF-Hands quest, you don't need to pay the npc an additional 10k to find the box.

Yea, it sounds stupid and all, but it wasnt posted anywhere. Plus, it made my day (woo).

# Oct 22 2007 at 8:58 AM Rating: Decent
Same here. Guslam didn't tell me anything about a toolbox (though I could still continue the quest by talking to the Tenshodo NPC). Out of interest, I went back and tried talking to all the NPCs in the shop with Guslam. It turns out that Deadly Minnow, the galka working behind the counter, talks about the toolbox. He says that a mithra working for the Tenshodo acquired one a long time ago.

Dark Spark is a Snap!
# Aug 11 2005 at 11:44 AM Rating: Decent
I went with 70BLM, BLM60 (me), PLD60, and THF69.
There are 2 Demons near the torches you have to clear before the fight. No Biggie.

Remember after killing Dark Spark, examine the SAME torch you used to spawn it or Dark Spark will respawn.
As long as you have Barfira Up and Silence it, you should have no problem.

Looks like to me you have activated the white mage gloves first. Those are in Beadeaux. You have to finish those before you finish the black mage ones.

I got PLD AF gloves quest from Guslam but never finished the quest (that involves eldieme's coffer key). Now i'm blm53, i've done AF1 & AF2 quest, and he doesn't wanna give me AF gloves quest for blm. Do i really need to finish PLD AF quest b4 getting blm's? Do i really have to fight Dark Spark twice and get another coffer key fom Eldieme? Good news will be most appreciated. XD thanx

hmmm. sorry, that question has been answered already

Alright here's the thing.. I need the coffer here for two jobs.. RDM (legs) and BLM (hands)

If I go as my RDM.. I will get the legs right?

I've also heard that its possible to get the old gloves with a different main job.. is that correct?

Please help me out!
RE: hmm
# Feb 05 2006 at 2:43 AM Rating: Default
You are correct on both parts.

yes you CAN get the gloves "Key Item" with any job and yes you must be "That JOB" to get the AF for said job straight from the coffer.

Here's the catch, IF you go as you RDM and open the coffer you will get the RDM AF first (IF you don't already have them) then when you open it agian you will get the gloves key item since the gloves are for your BLM.

I hope the clears things up for you and all other who want to know.

i am on my 5th set of AF now so i have been in and done this all ready.
# May 01 2005 at 1:50 AM Rating: Decent
for anyone that doesnt know, if u start the AF glvoes for one job, u have to finish that before you can do another jobs -.- as i just found out after finally getting my coffer open after 4 hours, and realizing that my whm AF glove quest was still overriding my blms even tho i cant stand my whm nemore --;

This is one of the hardest coffer keys ive had to get, I spent 3 and a half hours trying to get a key and nothing...we had no thf, just a drk/thf, but we fought fallen majors, mages, hellmines, and Vault Weapons, any suggestions?
Cake walk!
# Mar 24 2005 at 8:25 AM Rating: Default
This was stupidly easy, until we got mauled by a demon train...still haven't fought Dark Spark yet, but the coffer was easy.

I went with one party, coffer key, got first drop.
Second party got me behind banishing gate 2, looking for coffer, they could not find it. I decided to make a dramatic run, RDM sneak/invisibled me, and I ran like hell going through every hallway I could see. Coffer and key, total time: 40 minutes, 10 for key, 30 for coffer.

Since behind the 2nd b-gate, there is a spot guarded by the Tainted Flesh... this question came up. It agros sound and low HP, I know. So.

a) do you loose sneak when opening a coffer?
b) if you get agro from having to drop invis, trade the key and it opens, will get you get the item if you die? (in my case, Old Gloves)
c) if you do loose sneak, get agro'd as the coffer pops, and die, do you get the item?

pretty much, I need to know if I am going to say ***** it and just let myself die to get this item. If I cant get the item even if I die... well obviously not going to die for no reason! Thanks for help!
RE: Questions
# Mar 19 2005 at 3:23 PM Rating: Decent
Just did it! Finally !
Ls insisted on going to 3rd gate, waited like 6 hours total, no spawn.

Finally got some help to go to 2nd gate. Went in, waited 5-10 mins, spawned behind the tainted flesh (CR*P), so i was sneak/invis, remember that near the tainted flesh, beetle = sight, tainted flesh = sneak. I was quite away from the beetle while standing next to the coffer. So i removed invis, used my 2hr (less interuptions), took the coffer (that made sneak wear off) , and casted warp on me... got in jeuno no hp lost. Never got agroed by the Tainted flesh ( it does agro! be carefull, all i say is that if it moved far enough from the coffer, take your chance )

a) Every time you use a key to open a locked item (coffer, chest, etc), your sneak automatically drops.

b) If you do get aggro from having to drop invis, but manage to open the coffer anyway, you will immediately obtain the contents for any AF-related coffer. If it's a normal coffer you pop, the item will be placed in the Treasure Pool of the party. Whether or not you die after opening the coffer, you immediately get the treasure.

c) I'm not really sure what you meant, but you have to be alive and standing next to a coffer to use the key in order to open it.

Basically, the technique I've always used for finding coffers deep in high-aggro territory is go next to the coffer with sneak and/or invisible on, case be as it may. Start cast either a teleport or Escape while standing next to the coffer. Wait until 70% done casting, then take off invis (if applicable) and use the key to open the chest. You will see any aggro mobs turn to you and even hit you sometimes, but your spell isn't interrupted and you're usually alive when arriving outside.

How do you get behind that bloody second banishing gate?!

(edit): four levers, in the south part of the area behind the first b-gate there, on the map, there is a series of rooms. The west most and the east most rooms have the presssure-levers in them. (North and South) some have Pots, some have bombs, both agro magic.
