Summary

Gauntlets wrought by Borghertz, the legendary craftsman, lie hidden somewhere in Vana'diel.

Walkthrough

You must have completed The Crimson Trial - RDM AF1 and activated Enveloped in Darkness - RDM AF2 before you can get this quest.

To start this quest, head to the armor shop in Upper Jeuno and speak with Guslam the galka. He tells you about a pair of old gauntlets, crafted by the legendary Borghertz, that might have been seen in the Eldieme Necropolis.

Head to Eldieme Necropolis and get an Eldieme Coffer Key. The keys are dropped by Haunts, Spriggan BLMs, Spriggan RNGs, Spriggan THFs, Spriggan WARs, Tomb Mages and Tomb Warriors.

Next, find a treasure coffer. Coffers spawn in the main, ground-floor chambers at G-6, G-7, F-8 and E-8. If you drop down from the main ground floor at G-8, you can access coffer spawn points at M-11 and M-10. On that same map, coffers also spawn at L-12 and L-9. A coffer can also appear on that map at E-6, which is accessible from a part of Batallia Downs only reachable through Beaucedine Glacier.

Trade your key to the coffer to receive the key item Some Old Gauntlets. You do not need to be a red mage when you open this coffer.

Go back to talk to Guslam. He will say the gauntlets are work of Borghertz, but he cannot repair them.

You then have to go speak to Yin Pocanakhu in the Tenshodo shop in Lower Jeuno. She talks about a toolbox that won't open. Pay her 1000 gil, and she tells you the toolbox is on a crate outside of the Duty-Free shop in Port Jeuno. Find the toolbox and examine the ??? for a cutscene, in which the spirit of Borghertz appears and asks for Shadow Flames from Castle Zvahl Baileys.

Go to Castle Zvahl Baileys and examine the torch at (F-8). A notorious monster bomb by name of Dark Spark will appear. Kill Dark Spark and examine the torch a second time to get the Shadow Flames.

Return to Port Jeuno and re-examine the ??? at the toolbox for a cutscene and your Warlock's Gloves.

Hey, don't mean to sound like a total noob here, but I noticed that you can get the Old Gloves from a few other areas...can any job go to any of those areas, or does each job have a specific area. I'd much rather fight crabs in Kuftal than anything in Eldieme. Thanks for any input!

You /have/ to go to the Necropolis, unfortunately. Even though every AF1-4 goes in the same manner as far as the mob fought and the events on getting the gloves repaired, each area is designated for each job. ^^; Trust me, I don't want to do the Necropolis either. ^^;;

Guslam (Galka) is located at (H-8) in the Durable Shields armor shop in Upper Jeuno, to your immediate left after you enter the shop door. He will give you the quest for 'Borghertz's Vermillion Hands' after you have completed RDM AF1-1 'The Crimson Trial'.

Next, go to Eldieme Necropolis thru Batallia Downs via the (I-10) entrance (located underneath a hill). As the name of the place implies, this dungeon is filled with the undead, so you will need Sneak for most of your travels thru this area. There are also occasional bombs that guard gate switches and coffer chests, so Invisible may be necessary as well.

A map of the Eldieme Necropolis definitely comes in handy for this quest and others in here, so you should probably invest in that. Promurouve in Lower Jeuno (H-7) at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry sells the map for this place.

Tomb Warriors, Tomb Mages, Haunts and Spriggans are your main targets for the coffer keys. A full, balanced party of 53+ is recommended (although a couple of extra paladins can be useful here). The best camp that I've been in for this coffer key is located at (M-10) on Map#2 (you can view the maps of the place by clicking here).

Go to the intersection at (I-9) where you can either go North or West. To get to the camp, have 5 people in the party go west to the southern gate (I think it's called Titan's Gate but don't quote me on that) of (G-8) and wait there with Sneak on at all times. Sometimes an Earth elemental will float around, so try to bring some silent oils with you if possible. The 6th person (preferrably someone that can Sneak/Invisible themself repeated if necessary) should go north at (I-9) to the big room and then head to the west-side stairs room at (H-8) to trigger the gate switch. A bomb floats around in this room sometimes (if someone hasn't killed it already), so you'll need Invisible to get past it. Drop Invisible to flick the gate switch and then get Invisible up again right after. The 5 people will be able to go thru the gate and into the center, cross-intersection area of (G-8) now. After the 5 people are inside the gate, the 6th person needs to flick the gate switch again so that he/she can make his/her way to that same gate. The gate will be closed again, but can be opened with the gate switch located inside the center room.

Once everyone is inside the center area, drop down the hole in the middle intersection area and you'll be on Map#2 at (L-10). Head east thru one room with some Fallen Knights and Liches, and into the next room with a pile of Hume Bones in the center at (M-10). This is your camp! Nothing will spawn in this room (unless another party comes in to fight Magna C Lich), so rest and buff up.

There is yet another room directly east of here with some more Fallen Knights and Liches. You'll need to clear this room out before you can get to the Tomb Warriors/Mages, Haunts and Spriggans. These are located at (N-10), (N-9) and (O-9). The pulls are a little long, but as long as that room east of the camp is cleared, it shouldn't be a problem. There are other camp locations too, but this seems to work out for the best every time I've tried this (You can also check out the PLD AF1-4 gloves quest for more information on some other camp locations).

Once you have the coffer key, refer to this map for the coffer locations (click here). If you come back to search for the key at a different time/day, you'll need another person to come with you to toggle the gate switches again for a lot of the coffer chest spawn points.

Take the Old gauntlets key item back to Guslam in Upper Jeuno, who says that he can do nothing for you. Then head to the Tenshodo shop in Lower Jeuno and speak with Yin Pocanakhu in the back room. Give her 1000g for the location of a toolbox that may fix the gauntlets. Go to Port Jeuno and down the stairs to the Chocobo Stables and Duty-Free shop section and go to (H-8) for the toolbox. Examine the ??? and you'll get a cutscene with the ghost of Borghertz.

He asks for you to bring him some Shadow Flames (key item) and put them along with the Old gauntlets into the toolbox and he will restore the gauntlets for you.

Now go to Castle Zvahl Baileys, located all the way west in Xarcabard (Teleport-Vahzl comes in handy). Once inside, proceed to (F-8) by just following the path and going straight until you reach the gate with 4 torches). You'll need Sneak and Invisible to get to this point. Once there, clear out any Demons and Ahrimans near by, in case they aggro during the NM fight. Rest and buff up, and have someone examine one of the torches. The Dark Spark NM bomb will appear. You may need a DRK or BLM to cast Stun if it decides that it's time to explode (this could be fatal to most, if not all, of the party).

Once Dark Spark is dead, have everyone on the quest touch the same torch again for the Shadow Flames key item. If you don't have the quest up to the point where you got the Borghertz cutscene in Port Jeuno, I don't think you can get the key item here... So make sure everyone is on the same page first before getting up to this point.

Go/Warp back to Port Jeuno and put the Old gauntlets and Shadow flames into the toolbox and you'll get the Warlock's Gloves.

Note: This quest for the AF gloves is basically the same for most jobs, so it won't be as difficult to find party members for this as it is for some other AF quests.

Good luck!

That is the common misconception with the AF notations. They often come from people who has obviously not done them.

For each job, there are 6 AF pieces. 3 of pieces comes from a sequential story, hence they are called AF1, AF2, AF3 and they are unique for each job.

Now, the other 3 AF pieces involves coffer(2 parts. getting key, finding chest). Each job has 3 areas. Each area maybe the AF coffer for several jobs. That's why when people ask for help and they say RDM AF5, people will go "where the F is that?" You ask for help for a specific coffer in a specific area.

This is actually AF1-3, not 4.

AF1-1: Fencing Degen
AF1-2: Warlock's Boots
AF1-3: Warlock's Gloves
AF1-4: Warlock's Tights
AF1-5: Warlock's Tabard
AF1-6: Warlock's Chapeau

(for those that may get confused)

Also, since 1-# may confuse others (as it did me for awhile), AF1-# is the first set of Artifact, the AF2-# are actually the Relic Armor sets gained from various Dynamis.

To make your life simple, call it AF# for the Artifact, or RA# for the Relic, just what I do, and a simple thought, but sure makes it easier. ^_^

Actually, the comment about AF2 being relic isn't right. AF2 is just that, the second set of AF armor, around level 73 if I remember right. Relic armor is different, and in my humble opinion the Crimson Scale relic set is way better then the AF2 set.

Actually the gloves are AF4 and AF3 is the chapeau. After getting the AF2 (boots) you can skip AF3 and go for the gloves on to leggings to tabard, or continue on with getting the chapeau straight away.

AF1: Degen
AF2: Boots
AF3: Chapeau
AF4: Gloves
AF5: Tights
AF6: Tabard

totally correct, AF4 will always be the gloves or whatever hand equipment u receive. other thing AF3 will always be the one that you can only use when you hit lvl 60, and after doing quest you receive the title Paragon of *** Excellence and lvl 60 AF

Seems a bit pointless then to have AF3 be level 60 and AF4 be level 54 (I think). Besides, I know many, many hilevels that go by this little system I posted (not saying we're all the same, just haven't seen anyone actually do it any other way).

On the side note, many people on these boards have basically correlated AF2-# and the Relic set as the same. I'm not saying you're wrong or anything, just a mere observation. I appreciate the info but for sanity's sake I'll stick with what I've learned. ^_^

That's ok if people know what you're talking about. But if you ask japanese people to help you with doing AF3, they're going to think you need help getting the hat not the gloves. That's basically how I found out, when I told my japanese friend I needed to get AF3 (at the time meaning gloves), and my friend thought it was the hat.

As for AF and relic, yeah I think RA is a good way to prevent misunderstanding^^

AF Armor ranging from 52-60 is all AF1.

AF Armor ranging from 71-75 is all AF2.

Realic Armor is level 73, that some call Abjurate armor(sp?).
RE: correction

AF -first set
AFv2 ~lol version 2
and i don't number the peices other than AF1 because that's all the stupid puny weapon. AF hat AF shirt AF pants AF feet. Lol each job does them in different order, but still confusing. :P Finishing up second set of lvl 50-60 AF @_@ I have friends taht are trying to get all AF... Some day, but I like to focus on one job at a time. ^^/

and lvl 73 stuff is sometimes called relic armor, but people still confused by it. Most people just say zenith set, crimson set, hectacomb set, etc. and for all the relic gear i check mysterytour to find out what they're talking about.
