Large amounts of mythril were extracted from these twisting caverns long before the discovery of the Palborough Mines. Complete with a railway system for mine carts, Gusgen was heavily mined for many years. However, as the veins of ore were depleted, the miners packed up and moved away. Now the mines remain abandoned.

Persistent miners can still find darksteel, gold and other valuable ores in the tunnels of Gusgen. However, they must often compete against a troupe of strangely named miners who rarely stop or sleep.

Ghosts often roam the dark tunnels of Gusgen. Some are peaceful, and quickly fade from sight. Others are deadly, and they'll take any chance to drag adventurers into the afterlife.

When i was trying to get the magic skull a few years back, i saw a ghost of a girl go up a stair case and disappear at the top and reappear at the bottom, repeating over and over. Also today i was playing helping a friend and saw a ghost of a boy without a face do the same thing except it was in a room going into a mine shaft and made a weird noise... This place scares the **** out of me!!!

This place scares me to death! My friend took me to get the magical skull needed for the sub-job quest. He left me at the entrance and the sirens were going off at diffrent times. What do the sirens mean?
Mining in Gusgen Mines

For those of you who wish to mine here, I've got some general information.

Level (to avoid aggro from regular mobs): 50 (beware of the sound detection of Foul Meats 'til the upper 50s, so Sneak isn't a bad idea)
First possible level: 20 (keep Sneak up with WHM or else; even then, Feu Follets and Spunkies can still detect by magic and sight)
Number of Mining Points: 15
Detection: 90% sound; 10% sight/magic (Bomb-types)
Goldsmithing-supported finds: Copper Ore, Zinc Ore, Gold Ore, Silver Ore.
Smithing-supported finds: Copper Ore, Tin Ore, Iron Ore, Darksteel Ore.
Findings compared to other mines
Zeruhn: Obviously, you're bound to find better ores in Gusgen compared to this place. There are more RMTs roaming in Gusgen, which can lead to frustration. However, it's shameful to see level 75s running around going on killing sprees to get Zeruhn Soot. Best strategy to use here in order to make money early on: take a low-level character, make sure Signet is up, and level it to level 10, using Field gear to mine. The Conquest Points are a bit of a help, as well as the prices of Zeruhn Soot (which practically every mob in Zeruhn drops) in stacks. If your Goldsmithing and Smithing are to a decent level, this can be a nice place to obtain Brass, Copper, Tin, and Iron Ingots. Silver drops too occasionally to be worth much. Darksteel is a rare, rare find, unlike it is in Gusgen.
Palborough: Don't even try to mine in Palborough. There may be some RMTs roaming in Gusgen, but this place is never an alternative. Too much commute to different mining points. Besides, you might mistake a Mythril Seam for a mining point. And that just grinds your pickaxes.
Oldton Movalpolos: From my experiences, this place is better if you pass the aggro avoidance level of 60 and have a level of Goldsmithing over 50. Otherwise, stick to Gusgen. Rares in here are less common than in Gusgen. I rarely got Darksteel in Oldton, but I've walked out with nine Darksteel in one run with Gusgen.

Summary: Gusgen has a tendency to have an RMT or two, but that's why we have GMs on-call. I've only called one once and he eliminated the threat. I can safely say that it has the highest tendencies to let some Darksteel be found, but, like I said, get rid of RMTs whenever possible! I've found that certain hacks can make your mining findings horrible! I didn't think it was possible, but breaking five pickaxes in a row with complete Worker equipment... not so much fun.

I didn't bother to show my comparison to Yughott Grotto, because I didn't spend enough time at Yughott. I didn't find anything of value at Yughott, so to speak. Basic finds, without any rares in a good, long period of time.

With full mining equipment and maxed-out inventory space and the ability to successfully synth all ores here (other than Tin and Pebbles, your throw-away-ers), you can take in eight stacks of pickaxes and three stacks of Fire Crystals and walk out three or four hours later with 250k+ worth of ores. Seeing as though I've come so far in the mining world by myself, I'm proud of such a profit.

if ya go to hume forums theres a massive forum with people debating on what happened down there my favourite theory is that rather they hid people down the mines in bastok V sandy war or the mine had a collapse thats why the mobs have names like crushed or injured just a guess but might be true who knows

Just pwnt blind moby today, pretty easy with my lvl 32 mnk self, went to the yellow hp though, that scared me, the dog didnt agro though ^^.

this place has always creeped me out/interested me ever since eco-warrior quest, when i saw the ghost kid float around, kinda freaked me out, lol

NOW, info on this place was lacking, so thats why i didnt skip 2-3:

1) Sandorian Priests have been performing exorcism rituals (tele-hola quest?) on the mines.
2) Acording to everyones favorite presidental aide, Lucius (and cid, he was there to...), gusgen has some sort of magical importance
3) Glucolite can only be obtained from Gusgen, glucolite is a rare meatle with unknown props., and you obtain it from a pool of water, which happens to be where ghost NMs spawn...

MY THEORY BASED ON THIS: glocolite is formed by the crystal line, (those offshoots of the tele crags) which just so happens to be running underground a couple meters from gusgen, the glocolite can re-animate dead tissue... which is why the dead in gusgen didnt stay dead,

ANYWAY that is just my theory...

Theres always the "Moria Theory" to, they dug up the balrog ^^ lol

RE: Bastok Mission 2-3
# Oct 06 2005 at 10:20 AM Rating: Decent
Ok where did you find this knowledge to get a theory? All I knew was I nearly had a heart attack while doing the Holla quest.

I'm in Gusgen. Friend just died and hp. If I die I delevel. I'm WHM so I can Sneak and Invis around til I get out.

I see Juggler Hecatomb. (Someone told my the he was a HMN >.>) I think.. Oh nice... and carry on.

I turn the coner into a dead end. And I see a ghost at the end standing on the buffers (Hume one not a mob).

At that instant the sirens go off.

I wasn't told this would happen. It's about 1am in the morning, (Real life time) and I was scared out of my mind.

Also another ghost appeared (Hume one not a mob) but he was on the ceiling...

First thing I did was smack my speaked in hope of hiting the off button. Instead I knocked the power cable out. >.>

Anyways I escaped and never went back... til I had to finish off my mules Deathbringer quest. >.>

By the looks of it something horrible happened in Gusgen by the number of ghosts there. But does anyone know what happened in Gusgen?

Theres always the "Moria Theory" to, they dug up the balrog ^^ lol

Two things.

1) "Moria Theory"? Whats that?
2) Balrog? Who or what is that?

There are a alot of places in this game that intrest me alot. I want to find out as much as I can from quests but most I can't do. Like the MNK AF and the Eco-Warrior. I was wondering could someone tell me the whole history and information about this place.

Like why are there ghosts here?(NOT the mob ghosts) Why do Sirens go off during the night?

Also if anyone has information about and other Dungeons (Maze of Shakhrami, Attohwa Chasm etc.) Could they give me more history lessons or tell me quests to do to find out more? ^^;

This place sucks to die in as a BST with reraise
-.- Im lying there dead now waiting for someone to whipe 2 nearby skeletons, IMO you should be revived with 100%HP of course in a weakened state.
Im ******* unable to raise myself w/o dying Ill get aggro at once >.<

Small opening
# Mar 02 2005 at 2:01 PM Rating: Decent
I was recently exploring the mines and happened across a ??? at location G-7 on the bottom most map near the north-west corner. When clicked it says "There is a small opening here". I've tried to mine it with a pickaxe but it says that I can not even mine it open or something along those lines.

I thought it was the ??? for the teleport holla quest but this is farther north than the holla one.

Any ideas?

The only thing I ever heard that was storyline for this place was the following from a role-play with a fellow elvaan:

*namecensored*: Those greedy humes dug too deep...they uncovered something.
Eiyoko: What did they uncover?
*namecensored*: Let me know when you find an answer to that.

Can anyone tell me the storyline behind these mines? Anyone?
RE: storyline
# May 19 2005 at 10:03 AM Rating: Decent
The tele-hola, mnk AF1, and Bastok mission 3-2 probably say some things about it... if i get mnk or rng to lvl 35 im going to do mission 3-2 and mabye find out why there is some ghost of a 5 year old kid in the room for the eco-warrior quest...
RE: storyline
# Jan 30 2005 at 2:48 PM Rating: Decent
First of all there is an Elvaan child ghost there, not a Hume. My guess is do the demand of metal ores in San d'Oria and real lacking or a mine, they made Gusgen, but something went wrong. But that's just my theory.

listening to the kewl music^^ ,but then I saw a goblin that was EP to me and my friend wanted me to keep looking for the skull so I left. I had a good time in there while it lasted ^.^.

Anyone know what mobs in here drop the key? Or do all of them have a chance of dropping it. I'm probably going to do RSE here.
RE: Key?

I dont know if this is correct for sure but i heard the Fue Fei <-( not correct spelling)things drop the key. They are one of the bomb familes down there other then spunkies.
i tried getting key off them myself havent killed to many but no li\uck so it will probally take you a little if it is true that they are the ones who drop the keys.

I found the sirens to be a regular thing that seemed to happen once a night at exactly 2:00.
I heard a rumour that it's the mine doors closing for the night.
The ghosts are really cool, I heard a woman scream, thinking it was someone fighting and dodging a hit (like it sounded) I turned round to look and there was nothing there, the children seriously freak me out though ><

RE: Siren
# Dec 19 2004 at 10:03 PM Rating: Decent
The siren of which you speak activates 2 NM's, One spawns where blind moby is, and the other is directly across the map, Both are ghost type. I had trouble soloing these at 50, but the can be done.

There is also a few on a diff part of the map...

I believe quezac meant to reply to paoa's question about the CoP zone inside of Gusgen Mines. That zone is not accessible unless you have the CoP expansion, yet it will look like you can zone into it.

There are several areas around the world now that have these "new" entrances.

Yes this is the entrance to Movalpolos a new zone in CoP. With the update you can now see this on your region map.

# Apr 06 2005 at 7:52 AM Rating: Decent
i am going to agree with jaruu. I was a lvl 44 whm when i first tried to mine there. It was safe enough if u feel like casting sneak thousands of times. but then i lvl'd pld to 51 and nothing there aggros me other then the evil NM's of course. ( I dropped down the one whole and the one juggler NM killed me like i wasnt there so be careful event at 50+ )

I can move around gusgen and shakhrami without getting any aggro at level 45, only NMs are high enough to aggro me.

I still haven't found a way to walk out from the back area of gusgen though, so may yet be something i haven't seen.^^

I think the best time is lvl 50. You shouldn't get much if any aggro. Or if you sub a Whm and use sneak, that should help alittle.

I hear that there are ghosts and such in these mines. Anyone care to send any pics? Or a map of Gusgen?
